2010 2ND

Tamarine has only won one match at the AO in 5 years so Maria in two I reckon.

It doesn't seem to be a surface of Tanasugarn's choice, so I vote for Maria in 2.

Tanasugarn is a threat in name only. She has a miserable record at the Australian Open and finished last year in ITF events. Having said that she is Maria's ex-doubles partner and therefore knows her game. Maria in two, but Tamarine will test her for a set.

Tammy just doesn't have the firepower to test an elite player, but I like Tammy , shes always fun to watch so I hope she wins some games and makes it competitive....poor Tammy :o

This is not even going to be tight. Maria in two comfortable sets. She actually has a nice draw and, with decent play, can win a few rounds.

Alright it's a little exaggerated to say Tammy finished 2010 in ITF events.. After winning Osaka she played ONE MORE tournament, which happened to be Taipei 100K, which happens to be sponsored by her main sponsor Dunlop.

With that said Tammy hasn't played well in Australia in a long time, but if she can play the same way she did in Osaka / the same way she competed against Clijsters last year, she has a shot. Her loss to Baltacha this week doesn't make me comfortable or confident in her chances though.

She finished last year winning a WTA event. She played well here last year I think she's in with a shot.

Capra anyone...great draw. Easy job for Maria.:cheer:

 Capra was young, inexperienced and exceedingly untalented. One of the worst players to ever step on a main court at the USO. Maria didn't have to do anything special to double-bagel her. Meanwhile, Tammy is a veteran on tour and has had a history of taking out big names with her tricky game.

Remember Doha 2008??, Maria's form is questionable, however i think she is ready to go for the title.. and are you serious or just trying to be funny?

:spit: Are YOU serious or just trying to be funny? I don't recall Maria losing to Arn going into Doha 2008 now, do you? There is a teensy difference between going into a tournament having made the finals of YEC, won the Australian Open without losing a set, and destroyed two quality opponents in Fed Cup; and having played shitastically to lose in an MM.

On grass.

Tammy has lost to the likes of Clijsters, MJMS, Bammer, Petrova and Jackson over the last 5 years. She only won 1 set against those players, against Bammer. It seems as though the AO is not Tammy's best surface but she's still dangerous, particularly if Maria hasn't improved on her Auckland form.

Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn will meet former world No.1 and 14th seed Maria Sharapova in the first round of the Australian Open.
"It is really unlucky for me to play Maria in the first round. I am definitely the underdog," said Tamarine. "But I have nothing to lose and will do my best. I would love to beat Maria although it will be very difficult."
The Thai star has played the Russian on three occasions before, losing in straight sets each time.

I know Tammy well. If she was playing the way she did early last year, well maybe, but I don't think so. It's gonna rely heavily on Maria's racquet. I'm confident she'll win.

Osaka was in October, last year. Tammy beat Bartoli & Krumm. Then Tammy lost to Peng in an 100k ITF.
But Peng beat Sveta in Auckland, so maybe Tammy is in form.

If Tanasugarn plays well and doesn't choke, yes, I think so.

This isn't about the matchups, or Tanasugarn's previous results at the AO, or whether Martha will manage to make this a serve and return match or whatever. It's that right now Martha can lose to anyone who plays even merely solid from the baseline.
