As a result of a huge surge from fans the ASB Classic website had a glitch which is being rectified as quickly as possible and will be back up as soon as possible.

This quite sounds as if people can't get enough from their website because of their detailed reports from the courts and therefore surge the internet. :o

In truth, the reason why the website had a glitch is that people cannot find any damn livescores, so that they are looking for more information on their site, which has of course no success and even overload it. :help:

OK, but this qualy has players that even have won WTA events. How insulting is for women´s tennis to ignore that kind of quality?
The last entrance in the qualy field is like the last entrance in some other MDs later on the year. Auckland and Brisbane always have amazing fields cause the first week of the year has only 2 tournaments. Everyone plays them simply as prep for AO. If you know its going to be a good field, why don´t you prepare decent website and LS? I don´t understand it.

I agree with you. Usually, one can rely on the protennis livescores for all ATP and WTA qualifying. I was half joking. Maybe, the protennis livescore thing is just a beginning of the year glitch. But, it is working for the ATP tournaments so I guess those tournaments do have their act together.

:worship: , I second that. Last year, we got to see juniors playing live the ATP Telmex Cup qualys. But WTA events... almost never. And if we see something more than semis its because the tourneys are joint. You might expect that as Livestreaming has grown worldwide, this kind of ignorance wouldn´t happen. But womens tennis is subject to a massive criticism. This is the result of that.

Qualies dont pay the bills. Its the wta who should have someone there updating scores to wtatour.com

Free admission. I guess it is the wta's responsibility really, but I still feel it's a bit shameful, as a local.

I believe I have figured it out. The tournament DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE QUALIFYING. They just want to promote the stars.

I know you were half-joking, but unfortunately as a local I do fear this is partly true. The people running these tournaments seem to me to be mostly concerned with the image they present to the local media and with smooth-talking and promoting stars. They probably didn't even notice the livescoring wasn't working, honestly. It probably wasn't on the priority list.

Actually, in past years I felt that they even stopped caring about helping NZ tennis, since they were giving fewer and fewer WCs to kiwis (NZers) and more and more to so-called stars who were endlessly promoted. They would say things like "the NZers haven't shown they are at this level, so we can't give them a wildcard". When Sacha Jones turned down a WC the other year due to personal/training reasons, they should have found another NZer to give the wildcard to, but their attitude was that no player was good enough, so they gave the WC to an overseas player. They seem to be always greasing up to players they think they can promote. We only have one WTA and one ATP tournament here, it's normal for a local WC to lose and they need the experience. Attendance during these years wasn't even that good in early rounds, since people like to see locals. But thankfully this year (possibly because the tournament director changed again, but I'm not sure) more WCs were given to kiwis, and at least two scorelines (Westbury's three set loss and Beattie) showed that given a chance people can rise to the occasion, and maybe even learn from them. Attendance during the qualies for Westbury's match was excellent, showing the pulling power of locals here.

i feel like the atp just has their shit together...there's live feeds for pretty much every round of every tournament. meanwhile, we're lucky if we get the quarters-semis of the wta

I understand where you're coming from. However I think the ATP is much more popular and has much more sponsorship and money, so coverage is naturally better. I suppose coverage and livescoring are slightly different issues. I'm annoyed too that the livescoring didn't work for both days. It's abysmal, and in my last 3 years of following matches, I can't remember a WTA tournament where the livescoring didn't work for 2 days in a row. There probably were some though.

Hmm, what else to say...

I couldn't get to the courts early today, so only saw the final match of the day, between Nara and Lertcheewakarn. Lots of hard flat hitting, solid returning, especially from Lertcheewakarn. Before the last game I'm told Nara called her coach (I was temporarily away but came back to see the actual play in the last game). It didn't work, as she succumbed to the pressure of serving at 5-6, starting with a DF and ending the game with a DF.

Watched some of Keothavong practicing with K Bond, Anne looked quite fit but possibly not match tough. Both hit reasonably nicely. Also saw Marina practicing with someone I didn't recognise. She was getting handled though. Marina's bh just wasn't good enough, the topspin is too flat and erratic, so she ends up having to chip a lot. If she is to have any chance against Vesnina tomorrow she needs to serve up a storm (serve being her best shot) and she also needs Vesnina to play like an idiot. Honestly.

Speaking of Vesnina, I watched her practice with Dinara. Dinara, with her blonde dyed hair, was using her shortened service action- which was not all that great, really. Not much power, sort of consistent though. Who knows how consistent it will be under pressure though. Dinara didn't look all that good to me, so I think she will be in trouble against Yanina. Ves was winning a large number of points. Yanina was watching Dinara, standing a metre or so behind me, and seemed pretty confident. Of course you never know, maybe Dina will produce something. But I fear not. Both Vesnina and Dinara seem to have lost weight. I thought Ves in particular looked good, her shorts were showing off some pretty slim legs, but Dina (minus a wee little tummy, that seems to be so hard for her to lose) looked in good shape. At the moment Ves seems to have a slight skin issue with the side of her face. Still looks good though.

The gorgeous one (Julia G) was also practicing with Carla. Carla was wearing only a black sports bra and shorts, and looked a little slimmer than I last remembered. Julia looked quite good, but I think the slightly higher bounce makes it a little harder for her to use her big fh compared to the indoor matches near the end of last year. Only a few fhs from her were really hard, and her serve percentage wasn't all that great. But she was mostly beating Carla.

Lastly, Uhlirova and Grandin (I think) were practicing doubles against Srebotnik and Peschke. It was really obvious that Kata Srebotnik was the best singles player of the four by far, she had much better swings and more racquet head speed than the others. A shame she isn't playing much singles now, but I guess she is tired of the grind required to win against good singles players.

Free admission. I guess it is the wta's responsibility really, but I still feel it's a bit shameful, as a local.nice post. thany

Nice Post. Thank you for the observations about some of the players.
