(1)Alberta Brianti (ITA) d. Mandy Minella (LUX) 4-6 6-1 6-1

Brianti was the better player the entire way through this match. She let a 3-1 lead in the first slip, from then never looked back. It was the first time seeing Minella play and I was not impressed. She would play a great point, and then back it up with two errors. In saying that, Brianti played an excellent match. She was being a lot more aggressive than I have seen of her in the past, she was often running Mandy from side to side and the would let rip with a FH down the line. Pretty to watch. If she plays even half as well tomorrow, she will beat Bovina in straight sets.

Elena Bovina (RUS) v Aiko Nakamura (JPN) 6-4 6-0
Even though the scores suggests that it was a one sided match, it wasn't. And I think Aiko can take more from the match than Bovina. Nakamura is still very early in her come back, and can be pleased with this effort. Bovina played well, nothing special though. It's just the serve that won it for her. This match was about who ever could get that first aggressive shot, would win the rally. Big serve from Bovina, then she would put away the FH. Same with Nakamura too, flat serve, draw Bovina into the net and then would pass her with ease. Nakamura also hit a couple of great return winners off a Bovina first serve. I think Nakamura will be top 100 by the US Open. Nothing suggests that Bovina will be unless she plays a smart schedule.

Corinna Dentoni (ITA) v (wc)Leela Beattie (NZL) 6-2 6-3
Detoni was a horror show. If Fanning or Westbury had played her, they would hve won. Beattie was too inconsistant. Her serve is a disaster. Not much else to say.

Heather Watson (GBR) v (7)Jamie Hampton (USA) 6-1 6-2
The score line looks impressive, but nothing about it was. Hampton was very average. She looks to be in good shape though. Hamptons poor movement made it look as though Watson was hitting the ball harder than she was. I don't see anything in Watson that suggested she would break the top 100 any time soon. Her serve could be attacked and her FH could break down as well. In saying that I was impressed with the footwork. Most Brittish players I have seen here over the years have been very lazy with here footwork (Cavaday, O'Brien, Baltacha). Hope she proves me wrong, but I doubt she will.

(2)Mirjana Lucic (CRO) v Maria Irigoyen (ARG) 6-1 6-4
Either Lucic was hitting a winner, or sending it over the fence. Ok, it was not that bad, but everything was on her racquet. She should qualify and win to the second round at least with the Q v Q spots in the MD.

Stephanie Dubois (CAN) v Sabine Lisicki (GER) 6-4 4-6 0-6
First things first. Dubois is looking skinny. And by skinny, I mean THIN. I saw he last year and she looked great. She has lost weight though. Maybe she has changed something in her training? But she looked tiny today. It made her seem shorter as well. Lisicki towered over her. Dubois was lucky to scrap the first set, as soon as Lisicki found her rhythem it was over.

Silvia Soler Espinosa (ESP) v Anne Kremer (LUX) 6-2 7-5
So impressed with Soler Espinosa. She was great - Loved the hard court. She was dominating Kremer. This match could have been 6-2
6-3, but Kremer managed to dig out a could more games. Soler Espinosa was by far the better player though. I will be keeping an eye out for her in the future. I liked what I saw, a lot.

Sania Mirza (IND) v (8)Stefanie Voegele (SUI) 6-4 6-0
Mirza looks in great shape, but thats it. No footwork at all, still trying to hit the cover off every ball. Against an opponent who is capable of stringing two points together, she will come unstuck. I actually don't know how Voegele didn't win this. She looked like the better player in every department, except the score board. Mirza was not impressive.

(3)Jill Craybas (USA) v (wc)Katherine Westbury (NZL) 4-6 6-4 6-2
This was an excellent match. I was impressed with Westbury. Both ladies were really going for it, being aggressive. The only thing that got Jill though this match was her fitness. Westbury is slightly out of shape and being two handed on both sids restricts her movement. If she plays a full schedule, she could be top 250 by years end no question.

(wc)Vladimira Uhlirova (CZE) v Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) 4-6 4-6
Someone ate Anna-Lena Gronefeld. I am not a fan, but it actually hurts me to see a players with this much talent go to waste. She won, but against who? A doubles specialist, who was clearly there to make up the numbers. She was having fun, and loving it. Groenefeld needs to tidy her game up if she is to go any further.

Florencia Molinero (ARG) v Eva Birnerova (CZE) 6-3 6-1
Didn't see any of this match.

Liana Ungur (ROU) v (5)Olivia Sanchez (FRA) 1-6 2-6
So pleased for Olivia. She had a great season in 2010 and she is playing well. Hitting the ball with real purpose. I will follow her a lot more closely this year.

(4)Junri Namigata (JPN) v Sloane Stephens (USA) 1-6 6-2 6-4
Stephens just tried to hit the ball as hard as she could. Enough said. Namigata will lose tomorrow.

Katie O'Brien (GBR) v (wc)Emily Fanning (NZL) 6-2 6-2
O'Brien was great, I was impressed. She was hitting that ball hard and deep. Did everything right. Fanning can be pleased as well. She reminds me of Sara Errani so much. Same serve and FH. Big loopy shots. She has a future.

Liga Dekmeijere (LAT) v Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA) 6-7(6) 1-6
Both players were average. But I have to say that Lercheewakarn is beautiful.

Natalie Grandin (RSA) v (6)Kurumi Nara (JPN) 3-6 1-6
Didn't see anythig of this match.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. When Katie is on and playing well with confidence she is a brilliant player, and in 09 she was able to sustain it for a year and break the top 100 but sadly her game can fall apart when her head goes walkies. Hope she can put a miserable season behind her early this season and start to climb closer to where she belongs!

Dissapointed that Heather didnt impress but its hard to do so when your opponent sucks. I think she has done enough to show how talented she is and I for one expect her to break the top 100 this season. Expected Heather to be the impressive one and Katie not so much but lets hope one of them qualifies!

I was so surprised with Katie - Considering her recent efforts in India. But she seems to be playing well again. She should win today as well. She is not in the best shape, so the only thing that could hurt her is her fitness.

Today will be the real test for me of how good Heather is, against an opponent who actually seems interested in playing.

So the tournament is saying Lucic won 61 16 64. I kept glancing over to this match to keep an eye on her.... But I still can not figure out how she lost the second set. She was so in control and it must have been in a flash as the match lasted no longer than 80 minute.

Oh Katie is one of the more athletic British girls :( Perhaps too many mince pies over the off-season! I hope you're right, my fingers are crossed that both girls win again!

Alberta Brianti (ITA) d. Elena Bovina (RUS) 6-2 6-4

Brianti was just too good. Bovina is too inconsistent and Brianti was being the aggressor again. She had Bovina running from side to side, she would then take two steps inside the baseline and pound a FH winner down the line. Bovina had no answer. Bovina will be going now where near the top 100 until she sorts out her groundies. They are nothing on what the used to be... She can hit with good pace for 2 or 3 shots, then she gets impatient and tries to end the point with a FH down the line and sails long. Time and time again this happened. The look on her coaches face at the end said it all. He looked disgusted. Also what happened to Bovina's volleying skills? Yesterday against Nakamura she would come to the net and get passed with ease (but I put this down to the angels Nakamura was able to achieve with her double fisted shots), but the same thing happened today. Long rally would occur, Brianti would play play a very average drop shot, Bovina would reach it in time, hit a FH into the corner and then Brianti would pass Bovina cross court. It seemed as though Brianti was playing the drop shot with the intention to draw Bovina in (as she knew she could easily pass her) rather than try and hit a drop shot winner. I am being very doom and gloom about Bovina in this report, I know. But the only thing that I see in her game is her serve. And Brianti managed to man handle that more then enough times.

I will post my other reports tonight if you don't mind, I have to leave now to go to today as it starts in 45 minutes. I have only gotten home this morning as I was out last night.

I was so impressed with O'Brien again though, hitting the ball hard and flat. Same goes for Molinero, who I knew nothing about before seeing her yesterday, she has some talent to work with and I think she may crack the top 100 sooner rather than later.

I will write do a full write up tonight :) Enjoy your day everyone!
