First is Brisbane, the quali draw is out and she is seeded 6th. Here's her section:

(WC) O. Rogowska - (4) S. Zhang
A. Rus - (WC) I. Holland
A. Tatishvili - D. Kustova
(6) K. Sprem - M. Doi

Best of luck to Karolina.

However, when it comes to ranking points (and money), these $220K tournaments are worthless. In Brisbane, based on her ranking, Karolina should reach only the final round of qualies. That would give her 10 points and $860.

If instead she had played next week's $50K ITF in China, she would be seeded #1 and expected to win the tournament. That would give her 70 points and approx. $7,000.

Yes, but if it's on a different surface, in a whole other time and climate zone etc., a week before a slam...probably not a good idea.

Well, Karolina made it about as difficult as possible for herself but in the end defeated Doi. The score was 64 57 75.

Good luck in the next round against Tatishvili!

ma re
Dec 31st, 2010, 08:42 AM
A bit harder than many would expect, but if you look at Doi's recent results you'll see she's in quite a nice form (at least she was at the end of 2010 season). So all in all, it's important that she won. But the job isn't over yet by any stretch of imagination. In order to increase her points even a little bit, Karolina needs to qualify here.

Maybe I'm a bit biased when I say that because I'm a fan of Tatishvili also, but I saw Tatishvili play against Groenefeld in the US Open qualies and Anna was great. She hit some really great shots during that match and stayed positive. She is going to achieve BIG things this year, you'll see ;)

I'm still mad though because K-Lina has so many points to defend :scared:

^^ Source?

If it's true, that pretty much puts an end to our hopes of doing anything serious this year. With Lucic (most probably) out of the question and with Martic being absent from this universe, who will we rely on? With all credit due to the other girls, it just won't be easy expecting a result out of a team pretty much filled with youngsters. Hope they prove me wrong.

Sydney quali draw is out and Karolina doesen't have that bad of a draw I'd say (considering the line-up of this tournament). First against McHale, then the winner of Makarova and Vandeweghe (both winnable on the right day I think), and then it would probably be Medina Garrigues. If Lina would play out of her mind, she could qualify here, but...guess what...you never know with Ms. Sprem:p

Karolina seriously better not blow this, like she did against Capra at the US Open. Scheepers has been pretty much useless since her run to the 4th round at last year's Roland Garros. Since then she's 7-17 and a truly dismal 4-14 since qualifying for San Diego. Of those 4 recent wins, two were against Boserup, who's ranked in the 300s, and the other two were against Xu (who?) and Garcia, both of whom are ranked almost outside the top 300.

Don't blow this, Karolina, please!!!

Don't worry about that, rich parrents (Marcos can also help out if necessary...)

Then I looked at the scoreboard again and Scheepers was leading 4-6 6-4 5-0.:o:tape:

Yeah, she must've been injured because she usually plays better when Marcos (except for that Capra match :spit:) is there and she must've had tons of Croats supporting her in the crowd
I've never said this about a fave before, but I hope she was injured because that would make it better and it would give me some hope in K-Lina (not that I really had much before this match, but still...). Plus she probably was injured because of that really long break :p

I think what she should do is take some time off now to rest, and then when she comes back her ranking will be lower so she should play small challengers (25K and 50K) and try to work her way up again

I don't know anything about this latest injury (nothing specific in Croatian media), and when it comes to this "fulfilling of potential", I'm afraid she's slowly running out of time. She's not exactly a spring chicken and very few players have achieved their best results after the age of 25 or 26. We all hope for the best for all our players, but it's tough to stay positive about some of them (cough, cough...). I sure hope she comes back better than ever, but it's tough to expect that honestly.

Report:

Heather Watson def. Karolina Sprem 16 63 30 ret.

"Great win" - quoting some british fans who were there. It's really a "great win" when you are so talented to make your opponent retire during a match.

First of all, congratulations to Miss Heather Watson! The first player I've ever saw to win a 3 set match (2 sets and a half rather) with only ONE winner all match! British tennis is saved!! So as WTA!! :worship:

I've never saw Heather play, except a couple of games against Oprandi last year at Wimbledon, and I wish I could stay the same. This girl has absolutelly nothing new or impressive to the game. Before the rain appeared again (until 16 02) she was being blasted and murdered on court by Karolina's power and precise shots, being Heather's FH a huge target point of the croation attacks, since Heather's FH is even more useless than some pretty blonde girl who flies on Turkish Airlines. I'm sure Heather and the pretty blonde girl share the same airplane company, because after the match was resumed, Heather played just like her, she took a few steps back, allowed more time to retrieve Karolina's shots and started mooballing a couple of times. From this point on, Heather was able to retrieve most of Sprem's shots and wait for errors until the match is over. Oh, and the ONLY amazing winner whe hit, was at 16 33, she makes a short defensive slice FH, Karolina makes the approach shot that clips the net, allowing Heather to have all the time in the world to make a CC BH lob. Amazing, isn't it?

I hope Miss Heather Watson can play better than this, because as british girl, she can't be just a defender (aka pusher).

Cheering for Karolina's wrist to heal very soon.

I miss the player she once was, rather than the one she came post-elbow surgery in 2007.

She was never quite as fun to watch in her "2nd career", so to speak. She never hit the ball quite as hard, yet was still wholly erratic, and barely competitive at WTA level. Compare that to 2004, where the measure of consistency she had for somebody who hit the ball so hard and close to the lines was simply astonishing.
