They basically tell the players if you're going to commit to us, you have to do it now. I wouldn't like that as a player myself, but it seems to be working for them lately. Lynn Chi is very good.

Sorry I didn't want to mention any names because they are just rumors but since you asked... :)

For 2013 the recruits I've heard that have high interests in UNC are Hayley Carter and Kourtney Keegan (they only have 2 remaining scholarships since they already signed Chi). And for 2014 I have heard Hannah King and Mariana Gould (although I just looked and she is only 12 on tennis recruiting).

Obviously there are other schools I am sure that these recruits have high interests in (ex: Carter also has interest in Duke) but if they could land the majority of these recruits it would be a great team.

Mboyle should be happy. Sports and tennis are more fun when there is a true rivalry. And for talking, too, gouci and form are more fun, because they both are here. Though I want the Bay Area teams to win, I like that this year, UCLA and USC are about equal rivals with Stanford and Cal.

 Duke wanted Carter and they wanted Lipp to walk on, but they lost both. Don't worry though Allie Kiick (who I think might be going pro though) is coming in on a visit pretty soon and Jennifer Brady is coming in on another visit pretty soon as well. The problem is they only have one scholarship available so once they offered it they had to hold it so they might have lost some prospective players. I would expect they would now offer it to Kiick but I personally would offer the scholarship to Jennifer Brady if I were them because she won't be going pro and she's both a great singles and doubles player.

Possibly. I believe they are holding Gorny's scholarship (which ends in December when she graduates) for Grace Min. The Duke coaches are treating the 2013 class as if they only have 1 scholarship because they believe they will land Grace. But if Grace chooses elsewhere (or goes pro) and they can't find anybody else (such as a foreign player) worthy of the spot they will hold the scholarship until 2013. It honestly just depends, but I believe they will end up having the 2 scholarships available for 2013.

Victoria Duval and Samantha Crawford would be a nice combination! :p

No but seriously, we have two scholarships to fill...

Not sure Victoria Duval will be going to college. And I really don't think Samantha Crawford will end up at Duke (as I have not heard anything about her being interested in Duke at all). Your best bet would be Allie Kiick (who also might go pro) or Jennifer Brady ( who I believe is very interested in Duke as she has visited 2 or 3 times now - although Carter visited Duke 3 or 4 times and look where she ended up  ).

Oh ok thanks tennisbuddy12! That makes sense. See my mind always seems to go to the worst case scenarios and it immediately went to her decommitting- I guess I'm still recovering from Lynn Chi decommitting from my Tar Heels  I don't think I could handle it if Carter changed her mind too

^Saw that on a Greek site. Well, I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad. It's good that she got a full scholarship and seems happy with the decision. The Greek article also said that she was offered to play at some top 25 schools but turned them down for Houston. And that with the economy in Greece there are bad conditions so she wants to play at Houston first and then try the pros. I'm surprised because I thought she definitely could've gone pro since she's already been doing well in some ITFs but I think this way might pay off in the long run. The only thing is that now we probably won't see her playing any ITFs for a few years

She should've gone to a much better team, but then again if she wasn't doing well financially and they gave her a full ride, then good for her :yeah:

Kordolaimi and Vogasari now for the Cougars. I wanna transfer there so I can watch them all the time :rolls:

I am pretty sure Patrick Sullivan had a lot to do with recruiting Vogasari. Sullivan recruited Elena Kordolaimi last year, while starting his 2nd year at Stephen F. Austin. When Patrick accepted the Houston position in June, Kordolaimi transferred to Houston. I am sure it will be an easier adjustment for Vogasari with Kordolaimi already there. ;)

Although Houston is not nationally ranked, Sullivan did post a 43-10 record in his two season at Stephen F. Austin and last year made NCAA tournament, reaching a high rank of #45. Sullivan has aspirations to make Houston a contender  but I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon. I am sure adding Vogasari will help but he inherited a roster that includes 8 recruits from the former head coach, John Severance, of which, only 2 are seniors this year. :tape:

The good news is that I will be able to see them both play. Go Cougers!!!

Yeah, that definitely has a lot to do with her decision. And he had another Greek girl, Antonia Kolovou at SFA. I'm not sure why he left SFA when he built up a great team only to leave before they were able to be successful. But perhaps he can do the same at Houston? :)

I know Houston is his hometown and has family there, so that has alot to do with it. I don't know what caused Severance to resign, which opened up the doors for Sullivan. Sullivan was hired within 7 days of Severance resigning, so I have to imagine that Houston had already been knocking on Sullivan's door or visa versa.

It sounds like Houston really wants to build a program and Sullivan thinks he can get alot of support from the alumni and the community here. We'll see...

HOUSTON - First-year head coach Patrick Sullivan has wasted little time in getting the University of Houston women's tennis program headed in the right direction, as TennisRecruiting.net tabbed his first recruiting haul for 2013 as the No. 6 class in the nation on Monday.
"I may be a little biased about my hometown, but Houston is a great place and that makes recruiting easy," Sullivan said. "I think what separates us from most universities is that being situated in the heart of the fourth largest city in the country and on one of the most diverse campuses and regions in the world, student-athletes have limitless opportunities on the court, in the classroom and in the community. There aren't too many Tier One research institutions in thriving cities that offer top-notch academics, great weather, an hour's drive from the beach and a chance to play in a premier tennis conference. Our 2014 schedule will be one of the toughest in the country and it's exciting to have a team that will be up to the task. Our recent move back into the national rankings and the addition of these talented newcomers to our current strong and high-character core mean exciting things to come for Houston Tennis."
The 2013 signing class, consisting of international standouts Despoina Vogasari (Athens, Grecce) and Rocio Martin Fernandez (Madrid, Spain), is the top recruiting class in Conference USA history and the second-highest ranked class in mid-major history behind William and Mary in 2006. Houston's recruiting class received a first-place vote from a panelist for the nation's top class.
Vogasari, who signed a National Letter of Intent in November for the 2013-14 season, holds the highest ranking of any junior player in Greece and the Athens native is the highest ranked player to sign with the Houston women's tennis program in the last 20 years. Vogasari recently claimed her first professional tournament victory at the The Mytilini Open in Greece and has been a finalist in five other professional singles and doubles events over the last two years.

Martin Fernandez signed with Houston before the start of the spring semester, where she was ranked No. 44 in Spain's open division and No. 1204 in WTA's worldwide rankings. Originally from Galicia, Spain, Martin Fernandez claimed the U16 regional championship before moving to Madrid in high school, where she went on to win the U18 regional doubles championship and advance to the semifinals of a U18 Spanish national singles and doubles event.
"We were very high on our incoming class even before these rankings, but it is certainly a nice accolade to receive and the credit should go to assistant coach Jo Keene and our director of compliance Kevin Klotz, who do all of the important behind the scenes work and receive very little public praise for it," Sullivan said. "I hate to give away our secret weapon, but I also need to mention our academic advisor Helen Gore-Laird, who is a real wolf in sheep's clothing as the most dynamic on-campus recruiter in the country. When prospects come in on visits and see not only all that Houston has to offer, but more importantly the incredible support and family environment that (Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics) Mack Rhoades has cultivated within our department, it really separates us from the pack.
"Unfortunately they don't give out rings for recruiting championships and we still have a lot of work ahead of us before we can start winning championships on the tennis court," Sullivan continued, "but we are excited to be on the right track, with the right people."

on Allie kiick, she just beat Lara ARRUABARRENA of Spain who recently made the Round of 16 in Indian Wells, quarters in Bogota and won the Cali Challenger tournament! She is up on Vania King 5-2 right now on the second round of qualifying at Miami.

Tennis fans that were fortunate enough last week to soak in the Gainesville Women’s Tennis Classic may have also got a glimpse of a future Florida Gator.

Allie Kiick, a 17-year-old senior out of Fort Lauderdale, won the tournament in straight sets. That means she’s 5-0 this year in $10,000 prize tournaments.

Although she hasn’t officially signed, she does plan to play for the Gators starting in the 2013-2014 season.

From what I've heard if Allie does well this spring and summer (and I'm sure she has her own definition of what "well" means) then she'll go pro. But if her results aren't great then she'll head to UF in the fall. Qualifying for Miami is a pretty good start!

She retired because she lost the motivation and to want and travel around the tour. The depression, which got worse because of the cyber bullying, helped solidify her decision. I think she would've been happy at GT, but at the time, made the right move.

I wonder how much higher Sakkari can climb up the rankings. I don't think she gets much if any financial support from the Greek Federation, so she must have to cover her own expenses.

Here's an interesting article about Sullivan, who recruited Kordolaimi by chance, when she had a serious ankle injury. ;)

If Sullivan has a good reputation with Greece's Davis Cup coaches and given he's recruited Kordolaimi and now Vogasari. I have to wonder if Sakkari would be next

Given that Sakkari is a top prospect, parent's not dentists, mother highest ranked player in Greece history, I would think that it would be a smart move, tennis and financial, to come here (U of H).

Yeah, no one gets support from the Greek federation which is one of the reasons why girls like Gerasimou and Georgatou have quit/taken breaks. Sakkari's mother was the best Greek player before Daniilidou so maybe she has some connections to the federation? I'm not quite sure, but I doubt Sakkari will play college tennis. I think she wants to go pro. Also I think her family is fine financially. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem like she is struggling financially . And I think she is a bit better than Vogasari.

I wouldn't be surprised if Angeliki Kairi ends up at the U of H though ;). She's another solid player, but she is younger and wouldn't be a cougar until 2014-15 :p

Top Californians usually go to Stanford (exception being Turewicz and Smith)

Top Floridans?

Kiick, Scholl, Crawford, Brady, Duval, current HS seniors;

K turned pro, B goes to UCLA
Did Sam declare pro already? Duval too? What of Scholl?
Even Cal. recruited a Floridan this season, Lynn Chi

Not too good for Florida teams, UF, UM, FSU..

That's what separates Stanford from the Gators, who have at least 2 key players from across the Atlantic.

And the point of your post, was? Florida has had foreign players throughout the years. I can recall back as far as Divya Merchant when Andy Brandi was coaching. Not really sure what the purpose was. You act like Florida is the only team to ever have non Americans. Not like the entire roster is all foreign.

Good on Stanford that they can cherry pick all the top recruits from the US. Maybe they should look elsewhere to find the very best, though? They are the dynasty program, but one title in the last 7 years tells me they are slipping. The landscape has changed.

Its safe to say that out of the 4 you mentioned, only Boonstra was considered an "ace" top 3 player. Although Hitimana contributes, too; however I still consider her the key reason why UF lost to STAN in 2011 when she should have closed out the 2nd set at #6.

I am thinking UF might reach out to one of the Canadian girls that took a trip to visit UF back in February. I am not seeing any of the top girls from the upcoming class to commit.

I was just seeing if I could draw you in to the dark side...

Seriously though, if there's any team that can cherry pick, it should be Florida.

First of all, you have great tennis weather, which is a big draw especially with recruits from up north.
Second, not much competition with schools in Florida, unlike schools in California.
Third, 2-peat and possible 3...

With you being a UFGatorFan, I was hoping you could shed some light on the issue. ;)

BTW, Stanford usually recruits from Cali, especially So. Cal (Fantic knows something about that)

I would think that Stanford has a tough time, especially with more difficult academic requirements. Easier to get into UCLA...no offense slickshoes510 :scared:

I remember looking at the upcoming class and 3 of the top 8 coming out of Florida:

Chalena Scholl - Pompano Beach, Florida (undecided?)

Rasheeda McAdoo - Boca Raton, Florida (Georgia Tech)

Jennifer Brady - Boca Raton, Florida (UCLA)

What I recall with match-ups with Gators vs. Cards (2011, 2010, 2004, 2003, 1999, and 1996) is that usually the team favorite to win was upset by the other team.

Info released yesterday:
WTEN: Buckeyes Add to 2014 Roster
Incoming class mark first recruits for Schaub

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Incoming freshmen Gabriella De Santis, Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz signed NCAA National Letters of Intent this spring and are set to join Sandy Niehaus, who signed her NLI in December, on the Ohio State women’s tennis team in the 2013-2014 season. The class of four incoming freshmen marks the first recruiting class for head coach Melissa Schaub, who was tabbed head coach of the Buckeyes May 14.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have Miho, Gabriella, and Ferny joining us at Ohio State,” Schaub said. “They have all had remarkable junior careers, and Bryan (Koniecko) and I believe they are going to make an immediate impact on our program. We could not be more excited to get these three, along with Sandy Niehaus, here to start working.”

De Santis is currently the second-highest ranked player in Venezuela and ranked No.161 in the world. De Santis competed in the 2013 Fed Cup in Medellin, Colombia and has represented her country at the Junior Fed Cup five times. De Santis has also played in several ITF tournaments in four different countries, including the Casablanca (Mexico) and Copa del Café (Costa Rica).

Kowase ended the 2011 season ranked No. 48 in the world and has spent the last six years competing on the Japanese National Team. Kowase captured the title at the U-16 Junior Fed Cup and earned a career-high world ranking of No.14. Kowase reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 Wimbledon Juniors (GA) in doubles competition and was singles runner up at the 2010 Osaka Mayor’s Cup. Kowase’s sister, Maho, is a junior on the University of Georgia women’s tennis team.

Angeles Paz earned a career-high No. 50 ranking in the junior ITF standings and was named the Doubles Champion at a Grade 2 ITF tournament in Argentina. The Lima, Peru, native claimed her first ITF tournament at age 14 and was a two-time doubles finalist in Grade 1 ITF contests in Brazil and Colombia. Angeles Paz reached the semifinals in singles competition in two Grade 2 ITF outings in Chile and Argentina and is No. 1 in every age group in Peru.

Niehaus, a five-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, won the Ohio Division I state singles championship in 2010 and was the state runner-up in 2011 and '12. A three-time first team All-Ohio selection and a 2011 National High School Tennis All-American, Niehaus is currently ranked No. 1 in Ohio, No. 7 in the Great Lakes Region and No. 69 nationally. She helped guide Mount Notre Dame to a runner-up finish in the state tournament as a freshman. The three-time team MVP received the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association John P. Harlow Sportsmanship Award in 2011.

http://www.baylorbears.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/052213aab.html

I can't help but wonder wha her expectations were at Georgia. I can't help but think her comments are a dig at the Georgia coaching staff:

"Baylor is a developmental program, not a recruiting program which is important to me. Joey and Alison are amazing coaches and they really care about each girl on the team and their development as a tennis player and a person."

Georgia fans, care to comment?

tucker1989

I knew something was up when Mackenzie wasn't even going to the SEC Championships or the NCAA tournament with the team and walk-on Kelli Jordan was. Not surprised, nice get for Baylor. I like Mackenzie's game. It's hard, though, when you have too many good players. You either have to be satisfied rarely playing or transfer to somewhere else where you make more of an impact.

But LOL at this "Of course, academics were important to me as well - and you can't beat Baylor." Not that Baylor isn't a good school, but come on...

I find these comments very interesting.

Not only has Georgia been a top program for many years, their coach has won National Coach of the Year four times... More than any other coach in women's tennis history.

Herring went from 53 (preseason) to 6.
Kowase went from 37 (preseason) to 19.
Fuller went from 30 (preseason) to 1 in doubles.

When Kowase came in, I believe she was a 4/5 player in the line up, now she has developed into a great number 2. Fuller was a number 7 upon arrival who won a number of big matches this year at the number 4 position. King had a great second half to the season as well.

Seems like someone had some sour grapes.

Cardinal Direction
The Stanford Cardinal peaked at the right time in 2013. Coming into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 12 seed, Lele Forood's squad knocked off four Top-5 teams - No. 5 USC, No. 4 Georgia, No. 1 Florida, and No. 3 Texas A&M - over a five-day stretch to claim their 17th NCAA title.

Next year's lineup will look much different with the departure of seniors of Stacey Tan and Natalie Dillon at the 4 and 6 lines in singles - as well as the expected loss of all-everything Nicole Gibbs to the professional ranks. But it helps that the Cardinal are bringing in the top-ranked recruiting class in the land - their seventh-straight class ranked in the Top 10 and their first No. 1 class since 2009.

Americans Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle are fixtures in our Top 5, with plenty of wins in national championship and ITF tournaments. Davidson posted a perfect 4-0 record at last summer's National Team Championships, while Doyle reached the Round of 16 in the 2012 US Open Juniors. Top Canadian Carol Zhao - ranked No. 15 in the ITF juniors with four wins in 2012 grand slam events - completes the trio.

Davidson, Doyle, and Zhao earned 15 of the 19 first-place votes and 468 of 475 possible points to take the top spot in convincing fashion.
