Ok I was there and it was bad but not disgusting. Yes she did push her backhand but Kremer really was extremely focused and player very well. She ran down all Eleni's balls which really frustrated her.

It was tough since she played so well against Bovina and I agree she should have not lost 12 games in a row but Kremer really did play well. Eleni will get her though, I think the problem was the Eleni just took the match too lightly, she thought/knew it would be an easy win and then lost focus.

First match:

After a day and a half of rain delays Eleni's first match against Russian Elena Bovina, finally got underway at approximately 4pm on Friday.
Eleni won the toss and chose to receive, an interesting choice against the big serving Bovina. Eleni broke Bovina to love in the first game but then had a hard time on her own serve with the bright sun on the northern end of the court hindering her ball toss.
The games went against serve until Bovina managed to hold and lead three games to two. She then broke Eleni and using her powerful serve, even acing Eleni twice on her second serve, to go up five games to two. It was at his point where Eleni found another gear. Her backhand, which had deserted her in the previous games, found its range and she began hitting her deep trademark slices.
Eleni got the match to 5 games all and then went on to take it 7 5 using big serves and perfectly placed forehands.

Seeing that the Russian was struggling with long rallies Eleni cleverly kept the ball in play, forcing Bovina to play that one extra ball which would eventually force the error. After a run of 10 strait games Eleni served for the match at 7-5 5-0 and had a match point at 40-30. Her serve unfortunately deserted her and Bovina was able to break and then hold her own serve to get the score to 5-2. Eleni again served for the match but her serve was shaky and Bovina found herslef at break point. Although Eleni fought back with incredible deep slice balls and scintillating cross court forehands and was able to regroup and serve out the match on her second match point thanks to Bovina returning her forehand long off Eleni's first serve.

After the match Eleni said she started slow as it was her first match of the year and her practice matches could not compare to the real thing. She remarked that her experience of many years on the tour for got her through the tough match and frustrating rain delays.
Tomorrow she faces veteran Anne Kremer of Luxembourg

Danii's Law

Second match:

Eleni looked good as she stepped onto court 6 today at 1.30pm for her match against veteran Anne Kremer from Luxembourg. During her hit up I asked her coach George how she was feeling and he said she had pulled up well after her previous match and was feeling good.
Kremer won the toss and elected to receive. The bright sun and breeze made conditions tough but Eleni bounded to an early 2 - 0 lead. Kremer was making errors and Eleni was not suffering from the slow start she had against Bovina.

Kremer soon found her range and leveled things at 2 games all. She cut down on her errors and ran down all of Elein's balls. Kremer soon found herself serving for the first set which she was able to secure on her first set point against a frustrated Eleni.

Kremer kept her momentum in the second set. Eleni could not get a break as Kremer continued to run down balls and find impossible angles. Eleni hung in there but her frustration continued as she could not get the upper-hand in the points. Eleni showed signs of getting back into the match with some spectacular forehand winners but Kremer continued to run everything down and force Eleni to play one more ball. Eventually Kremer was able to win her 12th consecutive game and take the match 6-2 6-0.

A disappointing loss for Eleni but Kremer played a good game and really wanted the win after her return from injury.

Good luck to Eleni for the rest of the tournament, she starts her doubles campaign with Kia Kanepi of Estonia late next week.

Danii's Law
Jan 22nd, 2011, 11:24 AM
First doubles:

It was approximately 4pm on a hot bright day in Melbourne when Eleni and her partner Kia Kanepi of Estonia, went on court for their first round doubles match against Lourdes Domingues Lino and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

The pair got on well and their varying game styles complimented each other perfectly. The heavy deep balls of Kanepi kept the team on the front foot while Eleni's clever veriations kept their opponents guessing. As their opponents were considerably shorter than them Eleni used the tactic of lobbing the net play on the return on serve which gave them the advantage even on their opponents serve.

The Greek, Estonian pairing quickly found them selves up 3-0 and soon after wrapped up the first set 6-1 in 28 minutes after some sublime smashes by Eleni and deep forehands from Kanepi.

The first set started with the Spanish pairing breaking Kanepi and leading the match for the first time. But Eleni and Kanepi kept fighting and thanks to some smoldering down the line backhands from Kanepi the pair were soon back in control leading 4 -1. The Spaniards managed to get back on serve but it was short lived as they were immediately broken back and were ultimately dispatched 6 - 1 6 - 3 in exactly one hour.

The team worked great together as their game styles are so varied, as previously stated Kanepi was almost unbeatable from the back of the court and Eleni won the majority of points with flawless smashes and tricky lobs.

After the match I asked Eleni what she felt about her play and her plans with her new partner. She was very pleased with the result and said that she and Kanepi would see how they go this tournament before committing to any others together.

Tomorrow they face the tough task of number 3 seeds Nadia Petrova and Liezel Huber. Good luck Eleni and Kia.

Danii's Law

Second doubles:

At 2pm on a hot day in Melbourne Eleni and Kaia took to the court against number 3 seeds Huber of America and Petrova of Russia.

The pair started well, nearly breaking Petrova in her first service game, before each holding their own serves and breaking Huber to go up 3 - 1. The Greek, Esonian pair look as they were in control of the tough match with Eleni exhibiting the powerful smashes and Kaia rallying deep heavy balls which saw them cruise through their opening round. Huber and Petrova were able to find their form and thanks to some sharp volleys were able to break back on Eleni's serve and ultimately take the first set 6 -3 in 36 minutes.

In the second set Huber and Petrova were able to break Kanepi's serve in the first game and held onto this break. Games then continued on serve untill 4 - 2 in favor of the Russian, American team.. These games were tight with Eleni once again using clever lobs over the net player and Kaia powering balls down the line. At 4 -2 Eleni then played a fantastic service game which they won to love and things appeared to be turning around for the pair. They pressed to break back on Petrova's serve but were ultimately unable to. Unfortanatly after another tough game Kanepi's serve was again broken and the Greek, Estonian pair went down 3-6 3-6 in 1 hour 12 minutes.

The match was not as one sided as the score may suggest. Eleni and Kaia worked very well together and really gave one of the favorite teams a scare. For their first tournament together they complimented each others styles a lot better than other more established teams, and I hope to see them play together more.

Unfortunately I did not get the opportunity to speak to Eleni after the match but I wish her all the best for the year ahead and look forward to seeing her next year, hopefully as a direct entrant into the main draw. Pame Leni!

I always do that list of Eleni's top 10 wins in my head.

But there are some which should be included, like when she beat Mauresmo and Dementieva in st Hertogenbosch and Azarenka in Paris as they were just out of the top 10 and definitely top 10 players at the time.

Also Look at Eleni's head to head with Bartoli, she owns her. The list is better if you compare her to players which have been in the top ten, then you can add Safina, Zvonereva and others.

You guys know its tough to follow Leni, but today she impressed me.

I was fixated with those live scores and she won 26 76(8) 64.

SO happy, she was down a match point at 4 5 in the second set, and then down 2 5 in the tie break, then she was up 5 2 in the third and had at least 5 match points before she finally closed it out.

Well done Eleni, first main draw win of the year. Here we go!!!!!!

I saw from 1-4 down in the second set, and she really should've closed it out, but she gave Flipkens too many free points with the double faults :(

But I'm not blaming Eleni for the loss. I blame the tournament organizers . Eleni played Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, doubles on Tuesday, and then they made her play on Wednesday? :weirdo:. She deserved a day off and I don't see why they couldn't have her play against Flipkens today, it makes no sense at all

And I expected her to do better in doubles, but I'm okay with her losing in doubles as long as she played well in singles :)

Some reports :)
Eleni Daniilidou vs Alexandra Panova 75 67 75

I saw the 3rd set from 2-2. High quality for a qualifying match. They were both very tired, but hitting a lot of winners. I wasn't paying many attention since I was talking to other people, but every point was a hard battle. If Panova had any decent net game, she could have won a couple of important points and maybe the match. She just couldn't finish off points when she had the chance. Eleni was very nice at the end of the match.

---------------
Okay, this is former poster LudwigDvorak posting about details of this match. I watched almost all of the last two sets and the end of the first. Almost the entire time I kept questioning Eleni's fitness and ability to actually take control of this match, mainly due to her inability of reaching all of Panova's shots and of course her own age and fitness level. It was especially true in the second match she played today, but she had to pick and choose which points she wanted to fight for, because if she had fought for everything or done more running she would have lost. I felt for nearly the entire match it was in Panova's hands, but she isn't of an excellent fitness level either, and she seemed to be cramping and having fitness issues at the very end. In truth, neither could really ever go on a streak because they were both tired and doing so much running in the last set.

Most of the match was very well played and well fought, lots of winners well built points. Daniilidou, I thought, I was playing dumbly by hitting too much to Panova's backhand which is stronger, but she was able to hit through it and behind Panova often enough. I think she would have won easier had she targeted more to the Panova FH, but it worked in the end. Both players gave it their all, fighting, and I remember a huge scream from Daniilidou near the end of the third as she approached winning. I was extremely impressed by her pinache, and everyone says she is this junkballing slice machine joke, but I saw her hit through lots of FHs, and yes, though she slices, she does stuff with her slice. It's not like she just lobs and junkballs and does nothing. Actually, had she hit more moonballs she could have offset Panova even more, because she really struggled with the few moonballs Daniilidoudid hit.It is a shame she can't move a bit better on this surface, and probably against a Govortsova she would get blown off the court, but she was perfect in her execution. By the way, she has an incredible drop shot and her finesse is by far the best I have seen in Estoril so far. This was the best match of the tournament so far, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the entire week.
---------------

Eleni Daniilidou def. Shegnan Sun 64 62

Arrived there at 3-2 for Sun and from that game on Daniilidou just dominated the rest of the match. Even if clay is not her best surface due to her poor defensive skills, her game totally suits the surface: spinned FH, okay serve, BH slices or drop shots, good net skills. Basically, during the match, Eleni did everything she wanted with the ball: she toyed with Sun's 2nd serve, making BH drop shots winners on returns; agressive FH from every point of the court, since on clay she can run around her BH pretty easily, despite being a slow mover; deep slices mixed with some short ones, always letting Sun in doubt of where exactly the ball would land on court; time to time, some net rush to finish with a drop shot or a deep slice, when Sun tried to call her to the net with some drop shot attempt. Pretty solid performance from Eleni Daniilidou, who is one of the few players who can actually do everything on a tennis court.

I am very upset :sobbing:

I woke up and saw that Eleni was up 3-1 and then I left feeling so confident and happy (I should know by now that with Eleni it's never over until the end :sobbing:). I had two exams today. I took my first one and I felt great. I had promised myself that I wouldn't check the score again until after my second exam, but I finished my first exam early and was tempted to check because I was bored. Then I saw that she lost and it totally ruined my day :sobbing:. I just can't believe it. She does this every single fucking time! She shows signs of form and then she has a terrible loss. I like Jill, but this is a terrible loss, especially for clay. Eleni should know better by now. I have lost all hope after today. I will still root for her, but I am done believing that she can do well. I thought for once Eleni would win a match like this, but every fucking time she has to always screw up . Really, Lena? Really??????

And then that ruined my whole day and I couldn't focus on my second exam because all I kept thinking was "how the fuck did Eleni lose?" :help:

I'm so mad right now. And honestly, it wasn't even a great tournament. She beat a random French WC, then an out-of-form Zec-Peskiric, and then she beat Minella who in my opinion is overrated on this board. What pisses me off more is that Chan upset Zakopalova, so Eleni would play an easy R2 against Chan and then we would see her on TV against Sharapova. Why does Eleni always fuck up draws like this?. I am SICK AND TIRED of it!!!!

And she would've gone up to the top 125 with this win, top 115 with a win over Chan. Instead she will be between 140-145, which is her highest position since September/October 2008, but she could be doing so much better

These were EASY EASY EASY points for Eleni and she failed to take advantage of this opportunity . Next time I hope she draws a top seed, so we can at least see her on TV even though she will lose...

Sorry if I'm being very negative, but I still can't get over it. Eleni is SO talented and she should be doing so much better now and I just don't get why she is so inconsistent. I mean sure, this is clay, but Eleni grew up on clay even though she isn't great on it, and she is much better on clay than Craybas, an American who isn't too fond of this surface

Eleni has won two matches in the Nottingham 75k+H tournament (130 WTA-points to winner)

First against Anna Tatishvili 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4
real struggle, nearly three hours, went down a lot of times on her own serve in the third set, was broken 9 times and served 11 double faults. But got over the line.

Second against Melinda Czink 6-4 6-4
Czink came through qualifying and has been a force on the US ITFs since her return from an arm injury, but Eleni broke at key points. Stats suggest a little better serving - 3 aces for example - but almost 10 % double faults. She held 9 of 10 games though and only had 3 break points against.

Next up: Austrian Tamira Paszek.

Well what a result :) 1-6 6-4 6-2 over Govortsova.

Up 33 spots in the rankings to around #120. Would be her highest since September 2008.

She is on the list for next week's Nottingham tournament too, then goes to Wimbledon Q.

Stat-fest:

1 ace, 4 DFs (of 77 points)
1st serve: 78 %
1st serve won: 34/60 (4/14 in 1st set)
2nd serve won: 8/17
1st return won: 34/78
2nd return won: 16/26
break points saved: 5/10
break points won: 6/22

Seems like she dragged out the games on Govortsova's serve, and had a lot less trouble holding after a shaky first set.

Great to hear! :yeah:
But she MUST win a round in the main draw. I don't want to put any pressure on her or anything, but she is defending 60 points from last year. Hopefully the draw is good, but not too good. I don't want her to get a super easy R1 opponent, but someone like Zahlavova-Strycova, Rybarikova, Morita, etc. would be ideal as Eleni is vulnerable against easy opponents sometimes (like Craybas in Paris). We obviously don't want her playing a top 20 player, that would be too hard, but someone mid-ranked who is decent would be the best draw for Eleni :p

I just want her to win a round sooo badly :sobbing:

Pame Lena! :cheer:
I agree with youngunner! Eleni should really push CoCo around and dictate play and also she should throw in some drop shots here and there :p

But Eleni is in a lot of trouble if CoCo has a good serving day :scared:

And doubles (with Brianti) R1 vs. (12) Chan/Niculescu :scared:

I watched the second set of Ivanovic-Oudin, and when it was done the commentator said "Ana will now meet ELENA DANIELLADIOU of Greece in the second round" :rolls:

^In 2007 for her New Haven SF, they called her Alayni Dandiniliou :sobbing:

But they can't say any names :help:. During the French Open they said Wozinacki instead of Wozniacki, and today they said Djokovak instead of Djokovic :sobbing:

That double i (or iota-eta) is a bit annoying ;)

it is 'dhani-i-li-dhoo' isn't it?

Yeah thats it I think.

My Greek isn't fantastic (sorry Yiayia) but I think it would be Tha-ni-li-thoo and the "th" would be said like in the word "the" on both occasions.

I just say it like how you wrote it in English though.

Well, as you guys know, Eleni lost 3-6 0-6 to Ana
I think I brought bad luck :o. She was up 3-1 in the first set when I started watching the stream, and then she lost the next 11 games :o. But Ana played very well. There wasn't much that Eleni could do

Also she lost in the first round of doubles in 3 sets . Expected

Not quite, TheBoiledEgg has her at #104 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=402496) (add the 20 points for the final win) and he usually knows his stuff.

Pretty close to direct entry to USO though. Deadline in two weeks I think.

She ought to be wild-carded in anyway, she's so close to the cut-off and not all top-100 players will probably enter anyway, so she ought to be there... Point is though, she's actually beginning to play into some kind of form, worthy of being called a come-back of substance...

Danii's Law
Jul 4th, 2011, 02:27 PM
So close to top 100, come on ELeni.

I hope these past few weeks have given her enough confidence to start player her best, and I hope she gets a good coach soon. I would love it if Henin coached her (wishful thinking)

Also aren't the top 108 players given direct entry into the slams?
