Sharapova fans have been waiting for this day! Although Michael Joyce isn't gone, this is a significant change for MS!

Former No.1 Maria Sharapova has hired Swede Thomas Hogstedt to co-coach her along with her longtime coach and friend, Michael Joyce, Tennis.com has learned.

Sharapova and Hogstedt will begin formerly working together this coming week at the Bollettieri Academy in Florida. It was Joyce who suggested bringing in another set of eyes to help work with his student. He and Hogstedt -- who helped bring China's Na Li to the top 10 and Tommy Haas to No. 2 in the world -- are said to get along well and have done clinics together.

Sharapova ended 2010 ranked No. 18 and was largely disappointed with her year at the Grand Slams. It's Joyce and Hogestedt's aim to get her to focus more on improving, rather than on her results. Three-times Grand Slam champion Sharapova has not won a major since the 2008 Australian Open and has struggled to regain her once lethal form since undergoing right shoulder surgery in October of 2008.

Sharapova did play both former No. 1's Justine Henin and Serena Williams extremely tough in tight losses at the French Open and at Wimbledon, but felt she underperformed in her loss to now No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open. The 23-year-old is hoping that Hogstedt will help Joyce to smooth out the rough edges in her game. Hogstedt began to informally work with Sharapova and Joyce at a private court in her adopted home of Los Angeles in November. -- Matthew Cronin

Can he coach footspeed and coordination? She really needs some of that. Good luck with this new partnership, it can only help IMO.

Why he is not the reason for the decline in Maria's game. It her shoulder and her now womanly body.

Her FB post makes a lot more sense now...

Getting ready for my trip to Monterrey for my exho against Vera. I have been working really hard on and off the court, it will be nice to play in front of a friendly crowd in a great stadium. My team and I have had a great off season, maybe my best ever so I am really looking forward to 2011. But before we get to 2011,... we have my favorite holiday, CHRISTMAS!!! My fingers are sore from wrapping gifts, I canít wait!!!

Anyone who doubted Sharapova's committement for the game after her engagement must consider otherwise. Like I've said before, she will hang on until the Olympics for sure and it's clear to see GS are Maria's target for 2011. I bet she doesn't think Wozniacki owns her one bit after the USO this year. Time for some big revenge in 2011 :cheer:

I hope this can help inspire Maria in 2011. She is too good of a player to go down like she did at the end of 2010. Their are issues with her defensive skills (which can drive me crazy..as you can see I like girls with good defense..Woz,Kim,Capriati) but what her game can display when she is "on" offensively is :eek::D

so good luck this coming season Maria:)

I find this so strange he works with players for such short periods, this year he was coaching Li Na and had a role in chinese tennis, he was also coaching upcoming Swedish talent Ellen Allgurin, I guess both are terminated now :o

Anyway Best of luck to Maria ;)

I think Sharapova would benefit from not having Joyce as coach at all. Thing is that she clearly considers him a friend and has a sense of loyalty to him. If Joyce hadn't suggested this she probably wouldn't have done it.

Legit to Mikey for suggesting it. This is imo what she needs, Mikey still there but a fresh mind also.
