Patty will start her 2011 campaign in Brisbane. :) I think she'll probably enter Hobart the week after as well.

Patty has very little to defend for the first few weeks of the year so this is a great chance for her to gather lots of ranking points to re-enter the top-40.

Go Patty! :bounce:

In 2011, I really hope she finishes the year ranked higher than year, she doesn't retire :p, wins another title in singles and puts together another good run at RG. :) I'd like to see her have better results in doubles too.

LightsOut!

Let's make the last year on tour (I assume) a good one Patty :rocker: :bounce:

Switzerland is not even playing in the Hopman Cup, but that would be really really amazing though! Anyway, is Patty playing at Moorilla Hobart International? Her name is not in the website's acceptance list.

The last time I checked they still had last year's list on their website. I've seen this year's official entry-list and she's definitely playing.

goo Patty!
i really think that if Patty serves well (like against Ana) and keeps the ball pinned to Stosur's backhand like she's ever so capable of doing, she really has a shot here. Their last match was pretty close, but she lost the tiebreak and all but gave up. And it also occurred in Sam's crazy clay streak. Now the only thing I have to decide is whether or not I should wake up at 4 to watch this

Ohh Patty...
I only saw from the second set onwards, but it was classic, disinterested Patty. She kept the score close with her serve, but her attitude (according to the commentators) may have helped as well   Patty won a really long game on her serve, looking like she barely cared at all, and then broke Sam for 4 all, but then lost the next two games.
A good tournament, nonetheless, Patty - don't retire soon!!

It's so frustrating that Patty was able to bring it back to 4-4 then lose it. She brought the game to deuce from 0-30 down and had a chance to move on to advantage had she not netted one of those forehands. I wasn't able to see the first set so I have no idea why Patty lost interest in this one...

Feb 17th, 2011, 08:26 AM
Yep typical Patty. 3-3 and up 15-30 on Sams serve, loses the point due to Sam hitting a forehand winner...smashes her racquet and then pretty much disintrested Patty from then on.

She was playing quite well to start the match, had the right gameplan but then just fell away for no reason at all. I guess I shouldn't be surprised...but still pretty pissed at that effort.

Anyway, good tournament. Can't be too disapointed with her previous two matches.

Which is often the case with Patty,in her games,if opponents are unable to bring presure on her,Patty would end it in victory eventually, like she did against Zheng yesterday,A.Radwanska at Mardrid last year, but her engine always shuts off of itself when facing ones unbeatable to her,not to mention an aging Patty(means for tennis only:lol:)

Thanks for the "backhanded compliment" ;) and though a fan forum is obviously not the place for a debate, I invite you to say in any GM thread what from any post of mine you consider "nonsense" and why.

There are of course many posters here fluent in German who can do a better translation, and you might find some in the fan forums for the German players. You might also want to ask them to translate the article from today about the SUI police looking for Rainer.

One reason you may find that the articles seem "fair" from a Patty fan's perspective is that both are from the tabloid Blick (not lets say the broadsheet Tages Anzeiger, which has been much more critical of them). Anyhow, CU guys in either or both threads in GM based on these articles, where debate isn't so restricted. :)

And if either Rainer or Patty wish to join the debate, the user account http://www.tennisforum.com/member.php?u=7781 is still valid, though most of its posts were deleted when that nasty Car Key Boi started flame thread was. CKB doesn't post here anymore, and I'm sure that Rainer, Patty, or both will get a fair hearing of their views on this board.

To Patty, I got Richard Pagliaro of Tennis Week to give you a long interview after your December 2003 wedding, the week after your mother did a (much shorter) one there. I can't link to it as the magazine went out of business a few years ago, but think you recall that Rich was extremely fair, and printed every word you said. "Come on in both, the water's fine". :)

Conny, a larger problem exists than how she does on the court, or even if she's technically bankrupt: was she betrayed by a man she totally trusted? Herr Hofmann says that both were defrauded by a man in London who he trusted with their funds.

But ppl like him do not typically trust others so much, and the papers can't find such a person anyhow, or evidence that he ever existed. Keep in mind that this new story began not in Tages Anzeiger, where Rainer's nemesis Hugo Stamm is based, but at Blick (where his old pal Beat Kraushaar is).

I don't know what happened well enough to say what has occurred. But there is @ least the serious possibility that Rainer is deeply involved in the disappearance of the money. And if he is, that he's lied thru his teeth to conceal the truth from Patty. Conny and others, she's a person first, a player second.

Okay, I've been trying to check all the entry lists for the upcoming tournaments to see whether Patty has anything planned beyond Fed Cup. When I checked for all remaining tournaments this April, I couldn't find any. But then, when I checked Rome's entry list (week of May 9) I was so happy to see Patty's name listed there! I visited the Madrid website for the player list. Patty's name isn't there yet. But considering it's a mandatory event, Patty should be there. :D:bounce:

Plus, she's on the official entry list of the Brussels Open (week of May 16)! Yay! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

So, she's probably going to play at least until French Open but I hope she (at least) finishes the clay season until July.

jeremyv
Apr 17th, 2011, 03:45 PM
But I just remembered, June is completely grass season. Hahaha. Patty hates that so I'm not sure she's willing to take that 1 month break. Wimbledon is mandatory though. But just like the recent previous years, she skips all grass tournaments and heads to Wimbledon straight ahead. Yeah, so most likely she'll just stay around until French. Well, whenever it is I hope Patty makes the most out of it. Her great wins this weekend at the Fed Cup should provide her with plenty of gas! :)

From, Patty's WTA blog...

"Roland Garros is going to be special for me. It has always been the Grand Slam I followed the closest and wanted to be a part of. I've been in the main draw and seeded so many years there and played some great matches, at times I was even one of the second-row favorites to do well there. It's a really special tournament for me. Obviously this year is a little different as I haven't been winning much. There are times I'm really feeling my game for two or three games, but it has been hard to keep it going consistently. I know my game is still there though, and I'm hoping to break this losing streak and get to a level where I can win matches and beat seeds. I'm trying to turn this around."

Hello one last time from Brussels...

All week I was telling you how I wanted to see some things in Brussels before I left, and I really did do that today. I mentioned the Atomium a few times and we did go there today finally. It was cool - to get to the top of the molecule you can take the stairs, the escalator or... the roller coaster! I expected some more scientific stuff there but it was still informative. They built that structure for the Expo in '58 and the views from the top were breathtaking, you can walk in a 360 and enjoy it all. It wasn't the bluest sky, but it was still beautiful. I took a picture from the top and have put it in the blog here... you can see the tennis stadium in it, but the center court is a bit hidden by trees. Still a very nice picture.

The other place we went to is right next to the Atomium, it's like a Miniature Europe and has small versions of all the famous landmarks in Europe! I've posted a picture of me with the Arc de Triomphe (I thought it would be appropriate with me going there next!) Anyway it's a big garden and you follow paths and play with interactive stuff, national anthems, rivers with remote controlled boats... it was really neat. There wasn't anything from Switzerland there, of course, because we're not part of the EU... but Sandra Klemenschits came with us and we found a lot from Austria. We same some ancient landmarks from Malta, which I didn't even know about before... Anyway there was also a waterpark for kids next door and the place has all kinds of fun.

I have another story to tell from today... before we left to see the sights, we went to the gym, Sandra and I. I was running on the treadmill and started to smell something burning... at first we thought maybe it was from cars but then we figured out - I was burning rubber. Literally. I was doing speed intervals and the smell was coming from the track. I had to go to the lobby for some fresh air!

Right now we're just hanging out in the room, watching a play-off game from a German soccer league. We follow it a lot when we're home. I don't really follow the teams too much but I'm interested to see who's going to win. One team was in last place in their league then a Swiss coach has helped them come back and win so many matches and make that relegation. They still have a chance to be in the first league next year... we'll see!

I have an afternoon train to Paris tomorrow - a fast one, it goes over 220kph - then I'm already practicing in the afternoon. Looking forward to another Slam...

Thanks to all of you for reading this week and your support, as always :)

No shame in losing to the top seeds.

So... I guess this was her last ever match. Of course, she has to make an announcement first.

Yeah. I don't think there has been a formal announcement from Patty yet. Otherwise, I'd see at least a tribute at the WTA site. Maybe she'll let the French Open finish first. Otherwise, news of her retirement would just be overshadowed by other headlines.

According to tweets by Matt Cronin and Jon Wertheim, Patty will holding a press conference today to announce her retirment.

From Sport24:

Schnyder calls it quits

Paris - Patty Schnyder on Saturday called time on a 17-year career which brought 11 titles, 59 Grand Slam appearances and a family split caused by a bizarre relationship with an orange juice-obsessed guru.

The 32-year-old Swiss made her majors bow at Roland Garros in 1996 and suitably chose her 16th successive French Open to announce her decision.

"It's time to close this chapter of my tennis career. It's very emotional," said a tearful Schnyder at a news conference.

"I had always wanted to win a Grand Slam title but that will have to remain a dream."

Left-hander Schnyder reached a career high of seven in the world in 2005, a year after she had recorded her best Grand Slam performance of a semi-final at the Australian Open in 2004.

But she hit the headlines as a teenager when she hooked up with Rainer Harnecker, a self-styled "natural therapist" who convinced her to give up meat and drink three litres of orange juice a day.

Her parents became so concerned for the welfare of their daughter, who by now was Harnecker's girlfriend, that they hired a private detective, Rainer Hofmann to help out.

Schynder's story then took a new twist, worthy of any soap opera, when she split with Harnecker and eventually married Hofmann in December 2003.

"Sometimes you have no advice. Nobody knows what to do, how to help you, and then you have to decide," she said.

"I grew up and I developed my personality. It's a tough life. Nothing is just given for free. But I know life can be tough. Life is very similar to tennis, and tennis is life."

On Saturday, she admitted that time was catching up with her and having not won a match on clay all year, she believed the time was right to bow out.

"I have been very proud to share great moments with all the fans over the world and with so many champions from many decades. It's an overwhelming feeling and now I just need some time," she said.

"I felt I had some more years in tennis but the last five weeks on clay I have not been able to push away the desire of wanting to do other things in my life. That's the feeling of my heart.

"And after my first round defeat here (against Sorana Cirstea in straight sets), I decided I had to do something."

Schynder said her best memory would remain her victory on home ground at the Zurich tournament in 2002 where she defeated Lindsay Davenport in the final.

She also beat a succession of world number ones in her time including Martina Hingis, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin as well as current world leader Caroline Wozniacki.

"Regrets? That's too strong a word," she added. "When I was a kid, I had so many dreams and some came true. I wanted a Grand Slam title but that will have to remain a dream."
