It won't end at 209, though. With some WCs yet to be officially assigned and surely a few more withdrawals, it will go into the 220s. This is pretty normal, or if anything a bit farther down in the rankings than most years.
Really late withdrawals are usually what make the cutoff some crazy high number. If you look at the qualifying alternates who are still entered, many of them are scheduled to play ITFs that week and won't make the trip. If there is a late withdrawal, someone in the 240s-250s who is in Australia at the time could sneak in.

She has also done well in Oz before. V sad.
I am also confused about Aleks W. i love her, would l;ove her to come to OIz and do well so surprized her name is on the Q list- esp when she hasn't played lead ups.
And A -Rad, also, does she think she should trvael all the way to Australia with no touneies for months. She don;t need the cash, seems like a strange move. She is too goos a player to rik coming to Oz underprepared. WHo knows, maybe she intends on asking for a WC in Hobart or Sydney? Hobart would jump on the chance to give her one I'd say.

Just a hunch but the way things are going right now I see the qualie cutoff point dropping a lot probably below 250 and very concievably around 300. I know quite often the AO cutoff is around 220 or so but it has on occassion fallen very substantially below that and I think this will be one of those years. A lot of those players ranked 225 and under simply do not like to take the risk of coming all the way to Australia when they are not sure of getting in the draw and so when the AO cutoff starts dropping it can really start dropping bigtime. That's how it is looking to me right now anyway.

If the Asian WC goes to Chang as expected, and Peers and Ferguson receive WC's (which seems like a given at this point), Pliskova is pretty much a lock at this point.

So everyone thinks Mladenovic is a lock for the French WC now? I guess it may come down to her Hopman Cup performance. Aren't there any other French juniors ahead of her? Or knowing the French federation, they'll just pick the next highest ranked player (Olivia Sanchez I think).

Imo, Mladenovic or Caroline Garcia who currently plays a junior tournament in Costa Rica. Garcia is also a very competitive young player who already defeated 3 top 100 players (Zahlavova, Cornet, Barbie).

I feel very sorry for Shvedova...
Im happy the WC is back to someone else now. Hopefully it will go to Caro or Kiki.

Mladenovic should without a doubt get the wildcard. Didn't they give it to her in 2008 or 2009 when she was barely ranked? I don't see why they wouldn't give it to her now, since she's already in the country. She has been playing fairly decently too... could definitely win a round in the main draw if she doesn't draw a seed. I'm a huge fan of Mladenovic's game and think she should be given the opportunity...

I would expect Mladenovic to get it, but as you said, Olivia Sanchez would not be a surprise at all either. The French have done this before in the past simply going with the highest ranked French player in qualifying (a couple of years ago they went with Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in that scenario).

Any vacancy created by the withdrawal of a seed shall be filled by the next highest ranked player eligible to be seeded. The position vacated by that next highest ranked player shall be filled by the next player on the Acceptance List if prior to the commencement of the qualifying event or by the eligible lucky loser if after the commencement of the qualifying event.
