Hi Mods,

I'm curious as to whether there is a limit to the pixels or size of GIFS (I don't know the exact terminology, sorry).

It's just really obnoxious to go into a thread (for example, page 3 of the current thread about whether the players are actually friends), and have my computer freeze up and then have my browser close because of the GIF.

Most of the time the GIFS serve very little purpose and in my opinion are just murking up discussions.

Is there a limit to the size or can I somehow block them to make my tennisforum experience less annoying?

Thanks

I think you are talking about the GIF avatars :)

Yes, there is a way to block them by blocking all avatars, if you enable it, then you won't see any avatar, either GIF or the normal ones ;)

For that you have to go to your Control Panel, then click "Edit Options". Then scroll down and under "Thread Display Options" you will see the options to see avatars, signatures and images. Disable the tick beside "Show Avatars" and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Save Changes" :)

After this, you won't see any avatar in the threads. To view what avatar anybody has, you have to visit their Profile, where you can see their avatars, signatures, etc. I have the signatures disabled for a long time, so when I need to know what signature anybody has, I just visit their profile :)

But if you are talking about the GIFs in the posts, then you have to disable "Show Images" over there, but then you will not be able to see any type of image in the post

Hope this helps

Thanks, Barbie :)

Usually the Avatar GIFS work fine and don't slow down my computer... it's the ones that people include in their posts that constantly crash my browser.

I wish the mods would do something about it, because people use them for absolutely everything now.

Thanks again for your help! I can't believe that you're not a mod already ;)

I tend to just bad rep them. They're usually completely pointless gifs as well.

Thanks, Ben, but I don't wanna become a mod/admin, I am happy to be what I am, just a normal poster :)

My pleasure :hatoff: :hatoff: :hatoff:

Yes, I understand your problem because I also have the same problem  What I do is that, when I see that a post has GIF/s in a thread and the thread is taking time to load, then I simply stop loading the page by just clicking on the STOP button on the browser :) Because I want to read only the posts, seeing the GIF is not important to me ;) I always surf in this way :)

No no, I don't wanna become a mod, I am happy to be what I am, just a normal poster :)

I think gifs should be limited to 500KB. Although some of them are quite amusing, the gifs make loading pages frustrating especially when there's too much in one page, and each of them is like 2MB or bigger.

I've just been looking through some options, and I don't think it's possible for us to limit the size of GIFs:scratch:
I don't think it's possible to block the use of GIFs in posts alltogether either (after all, moving smileys are GIFs as well).
I'll have a talk with the webmaster to see if there is anything we cán do about it, because we've been getting more complaints about pages getting difficult to load, and we want to keep the board accessible for everyone, no matter how fast or slow your connection is (hence some of the avatar/signature rules as well).

While I agree that you want to be as inclusive as you can, you should not limit the progress of technology, especially if you want to be a premier board on the internet. There will always be outliers that have not adopted with technology. Eventually, as more and more features are added, they will be forced to upgrade or be left behind.

Does the disable smilies in text option just work on smilies or all gifs? That may be a solution for that problem.

See, I have a brand new laptop and a fairly expensive high speed internet connection and I still struggle to be in threads that include GIFS.

They are unnecessary and just foolish 9 times out of 10, and I think plenty of people that have 'adopted with technology,' like myself, struggle with them on a daily basis.

I paid $25 dollars to be a premium member on this board, and it would be nice to not have my computer freeze because I go into a thread and some poster felt the need to post some stupid GIF like a random woman at a trial rolling her eyes.

We're all here to talk about tennis, and I think that should be what comes first.

Why don't you try turning off images in User CP -> Options? You will just see the links instead of images. The pages will definitely load faster. ;) The downside might be that images are also turned off in signatures (if you care about that). You will still see smilies and avatars. There is a separate option for turning off avatars, if you care. Same with signatures.
