She wasn't that young and her ranking plummeted into the 500-600 range after Wimbledon. :p

[Mona Barthel] said she will not go because she has no chance to play a event before, and travel to Australia just because 1 match in worst case is not effortable for her.
User Michael! asked Mona Barthel privately if she will travel to Melbourne and posted her German answer (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18680885&postcount=616) on this BB.

I agree with your first part: Her reason not to play AO was lack of preparation tournament (she thought a 150 ranking is needed for QD [either in Brisbane or Auckland]).
But not with the second part: Mona said that this is necessary to "acclimate". The assumption that it might be a money issue was brought up from user mk27 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18680903&postcount=617) (Mona camped during summer season) but is pure speculation.

Has anybody else seen 'these' pics in the Net. There is NO WAY that anybody
needs to wear a support like that for a cut foot. That is a brace for a serious
ankle or ligament injury. I suspect she injured herself at Wimbledon...maybe in
the Doubles or Final. She mentioned at the Exhibition match with Kim the
following week that she was having problems with her foot. Whatever the
occasion, the 'cut foot' was definitely a cover up for the real ihjury. Such
injuries occur when landing on one foot after the serve...and with her weight it
was only a matter of time. For me, this is the end of her career. There's no
way she'll be back at anything like the 'old' Serena if she ever gets back into
training.

You're probably right although the event wasn't in Beijing - it was somewhere random, which means it probably takes longer to get to and costs more. :p

I think the ATP's schedule, for once, is pretty smart with pre-AO events in Chennai and Doha and the qualifying cut-off is pretty low as well which means most players would be able to play a warm-up event.
