Pick-A-Winner (PAW) #504 - Bali

Welcome to BALI!

http://www.onthebaseline.com/uploads/bali_draw.jpg

Past Winners
2009: 1. Hantu , 2. Yarden

Playing is simple: over the course of the tournament choose any 5 matches in the Main Draw and post who you think will win them. There are no commitments for this thread; only players ranked 17-32 in the Race rankings will be competing. The league-table, scoring points, match frequency, and a picking summary will all be kept up-to-date below this post.

What you'll find, and where:

Entry-List: Post #2 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18730770&postcount=2)

Announcements: Post #7 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18730808&postcount=7)
Tournament Preview: Post #8 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18733873&postcount=8) , Post #9 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18733875&postcount=9) , Post #10 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18733876&postcount=10) & Post #11 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=18733877&postcount=11)

Some basic guidelines, for your comfort as well as mine:

Never edit your post. It leads to ass-kickings. And probably a suspension as well. If you want to change or cancel a pick, use a new post in which you inform me of the change.
Please try to check if a match has started before picking it. If a pick is late it is invalid, and you may replace it.
If a player withdraws before the match, the pick does not count and may be replaced.
If a player retires during the match, the pick is valid as long as the first set has been completed.
At least try to number your picks. Makes my job a little easier.
Post in a format in which it is clear who you think will be the winner; Player A OVER Player B. Player A DEF. Player B. Like that. And not Player A vs Player B. Player B loses to Player A is highly undesirable too.
And finally, please try to use the player's real names, not their nicknames.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

11/6
Everything has been updated after the semis. Delicatecutter still holds onto a slim 1 point lead, with three players tied for second at 50 points. Please note both of the following:
There are still 2 matches left to be picked, the final (Ivanovic v. Kleybanova) and the third-place play-off match (Date-Krumm v. Hantuchova).
If you would like, you can send your final pick by PM so other players cannot see it.

As always, good luck to everyone as we move onto the final day! :)

11/5
Everything is updated after the first round. Delicatecutter has taken an 11 point lead, but the three people tied with 40 behind him all have one less pick. It should make for an interesting semifinal round! Good luck to everyone.

11/4
Everything is updated after the first day! :D Five players managed to get the Date Krumm over Li upset and have put themselves in a good position early on. In addition, all 16 players have made picks! So, sorry alternates, but you've missed out this year :( Good luck to everyone as we move onto the second day.

11/2
First round scoring points are up! I'm working on the player profiles as we speak :)

10/30

TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

Welcome everyone to the second annual Tournament of Champions in Bali!

This year, we have an all-star line-up, featuring 16 players who have a collective 32 titles (including 13 in 2010), three former grand slam winners, two former number one ranked players, and even this year's Roland Garros finalist! These 16 players, ranked 17-32, consist of old veterans, new rookies, and those in between, and all have one thing in common: they're trying to become the Tournament of Champions champion.

In the next three posts you will find player profiles for all 16 players, as well as the two alternates, that consist of their 2010 titles, past titles, and even some quotes they've been nice enough to give me. In addition, I'd like to take this moment to make my predictions for this tournament!

*Please note, these are just PREDICTIONS, and have no influence on the actual outcome of this tournament. They are just for FUN.*

Champion: rrfnpump
-Former Wimbledon champion and world number one, rrfnpump is a veteran looking to return to the top of the game. Although rrfnpump did not win a title this year, I have a feeling that might change this week.

Finalist: Frooty Bazooty
-Frooty Bazooty has found success recently on the tour, and is also a veteran, so I expect he/she will make a good showing this year.

Third Place: jrm
-Well, I went with veterans for the first two, so I might as well stay consistent. jrm is the only other former number one in the draw, and has been on a decline for most of this year, but I think he/she just may turn it around this week and have a strong finish to 2010.

Hopefully, my predictions won't be jixing anyone! Please check out the profiles in the next few posts and, as always, good luck to everyone! :)

PAW Players: Seeds 1-8

#1: shuai.P
Rank @ Start of 2010: 37
Current Rank: 17
2010 Titles: 1 (Paris)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Paris)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 8th; Roland Garros- 24th; Wimbledon- 26th; US Open- 48th
In a Nutshell: Shuai.P comes into this tournament with only one title (Paris), and no outstanding grad slam finishes, yet still managed to grab the top seed here through consistent picking and lots of finishes in the top 15 and top 10.

#2: sdtoot
Rank @ Start of 2010: 16
Current Rank: 18
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 2 (2009 Tashkent, 2008 Moscow)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 27th; Roland Garros- 15th; Wimbledon- 59th; US Open- 10th
In a Nutshell: Sdtoot, a veteran to the game and tournament manager, comes into this tournament without any titles, the first time he has failed to win a title in an entire year since 2007. Will this be his first?
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: My 2010 season has been pretty mediocre to say the least and I was disappointed to just miss out (for the first time in my PAW career) on a qualifying place for Doha. Despite telling myself at the start of the season that I should take more risks, I think my picks were far too conservative throughout the year and as we all know, there seem to be more and more surprise results in WTA matches these days.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: I think the best part of 2010 was seeing a lot more PAW managers joining the game and I can barely remember a time throughout the year when we struggled to find a manager for the PAW tournaments. I won't start naming names but some of the managers have made a huge contribution to the game this year and that has been the highlight for me in 2010.
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: My aim for 2011 is to try to get back into the top 10/15 ranked players and to qualify for the Doha YEC's. Hopefully, the PAW game can continue to attract new players and managers in 2011 so that the survival of the game is not at risk as we head into the future.

#3: BlackEagle
Rank @ Start of 2010: 94
Current Rank: 19
2010 Titles: 1 (Auckland)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Auckland)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 39th; Roland Garros- 2nd; Wimbledon- 34th; US Open- 59th
In a Nutshell: BlackEagle, who started 2010 just inside the top 100, has managed to shoot up the rankings this year into the top 20. Part of the reason was the fact that he/she won the first tournament of the year at Auckland, and managed to finish second at the French Open.

#4: Sasja
Rank @ Start of 2010: NA
Current Rank: 20
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 0
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 30th; Roland Garros- 7th; Wimbledon- 23th; US Open- 30th
In a Nutshell: Sasja-- the only player at this year's championships without a title-- managed to jump over 100 spots in the rankings in 2010, starting the year unranked and now at #20. Interestingly enough, she is the only player here to have finished top 30 or better at all 4 grand slams!
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: 2010 was my debut on the PAW tour. It’s been a really great year. It’s a fun game to play and I’m really happy to be able to qualify for Bali. Also I started managing a few tournaments, which went pretty well.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Finishing as a RU 3 times and finishing 7th at Roland Garros. Ofcourse, I’m happy to be ranked 20. I didn’t expect that at the beginning of the year
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I read that I’m the only player in Bali without a title :o So my goal for 2011 is to try to win my 1st title! Other than that, keep enjoying playing the game and hopefully not go down in the ranking too much next year  And I would like to manage a few more tournaments next year.

#5: Alyouna
Rank @ Start of 2010: 31
Current Rank: 21
2010 Titles: 1 (Rome)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Rome)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 43rd; Roland Garros- 38th; Wimbledon- 20th; US Open- 46th
In a Nutshell: Alyouna started out the year with a 2nd place in Sydney, and continued to show consistent results the rest of the year, winning in Rome. He/she comes in here having risen 10 spots in 2010, and looking to finish inside the top 20.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I don't know whether good or not,I am busy for my work,so I don't have enough time to play PAW game.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: I am forgetful, I won a champion,so that's my best part
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I must spend much time on 2011 season.of course , I want to win in GS. I got NO.1 before, so I really want a GS in 2011.

#6: ~Eclipsed~
Rank @ Start of 2010: 65
Current Rank: 22
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 1 (2008 Cincinnati)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 3rd; Roland Garros- 43rd; Wimbledon- 26th; US Open- 67th
In a Nutshell: Although ~Eclipsed~ has not (yet) won a title in 2010, he/she is one of only two players to have finished inside the top 3 at a grand slam this year, finishing 3rd at the Australian Open. He/she also won a title in 2008, taking home the trophy in Cincinnati.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: 2010 started out well, but seemed to get worse as it went on minus a few decent performances here and there. I'm content with my finish since I'm in this tournament, but would have liked to play better!
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: The beginning when I finished 3rd at the Australian Open
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: To play smarter and be in the YEC next year. I feel confident I can do it as long as I play my game.

#7: bgbgbg
Rank @ Start of 2010: 72
Current Rank: 23
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 3 (2008 Wimbledon, 2006 Bogota, 2004 Estoril)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 17th; Roland Garros- 5th; Wimbledon- 42nd; US Open- 54th
In a Nutshell: Bgbgbg is yet another player who has not yet won a title in 2010, but he/she has been very consistent, finishing in the top 10 a handful of times (including a 5th place finish at the French Open). In addition, he/she is a former grand slam champion, winning Wimbledon in 2008, and former world number four. He/she has managed to jump almost 50 players in the rankings in 2010, but is really looking to get his/her first title of the year.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I have mixed feelings about the 2010 season. It was higher than the average for me, returning to Top 50 (even to Top 30) and more important for me is that I played well in most tournaments - I have probably a dozen Top 10 finishes. The bad thing is that this is the first even year without a title for me (my three titles are in 2004, 2006 and 2008) - unless I win in Bali
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: In the last years I always start the year well in January, although the Australian Open was not so good as in the last years (semifinal in 2008 and quarterfinal in 2009). My best big tournament was Roland Garros (5th place) and my best not so big tournament was Quebec City (2nd place).
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I hope to return to Top 10, although I do not believe I can do it. I also hope to win a title, compensating the lack of a title in 2010.

#8: igralec33
Rank @ Start of 2010: 168
Current Rank: 24
2010 Titles: 2 (Eastbourne, Luxembourg)
Career Titles: 2 (2010 Eastbourne, 2010 Luxembourg)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 57th; Roland Garros- 55th; Wimbledon- 10th; US Open- 18th
In a Nutshell: A rookie of the tour, igralec33 has jumped over 140 spots in the rankings this year, taking home two titles and finishing in the top ten at Wimbledon.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: This was actually my first PAW season and of course it was really amazing one for me. TOP 30 on race and on rankings are very solid results for me and now a honor to play in Bali. As newcomer on PAW tour I'm really satisfied with this year. And I'm even the best Slovenian on race – I have 4 points more than jrm (before Bali). So, it was really great season.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: To be honest I have memory like a goldfish so I don't really remember which part of 2010 was the best for me. I just know I won 2 tournaments this year – one on grass (Eastbourne) and one on hard indoors (Luxembourg) … so these are best parts of year for me, I think. If I am correct I think I have also TOP 10 performance in Wimbledon.
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: It's always hard to something about expectations for next season. Everyone wish that can be higher on ranking but this is impossible. I will try to do my best and will see how things will go. I wouldn't be surprised if I will fall next year but of course I will try not to. I will just enjoy in this game as I did this year and hopefully some good results will come.

PAW Players: Seeds 9-16

#9: jrm
Rank @ Start of 2010: 3
Current Rank: 25
2010 Titles: 2 (Sydney, Stanford)
Career Titles: 6 (2010 Sydney, 2010 Stanford, 2009 US Open, 2009 Quebec City, 2006 Canberra, 2005 New Haven)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 81st; Roland Garros- 29th; Wimbledon- 16th; US Open- 30th
In a Nutshell: A long-time veteran of the tour and tournament manager, jrm is a rarity at these championships: he/she actually fell in the rankings this year, dropping 22 spots from number 3 in the world. He/she did, however, manage to capture two titles, and looks to get a third here. He/she is a former US Open champion (in 2009), and actually spent six weeks at number one in the world shortly thereafter.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: PAW 2010 season was probably my worst since playing despite winning two tournaments but i didn't perform well in slams and overall no real highlights!
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Obviously winning two tournaments and i was extremely happy for Chris (Chris84) for making it to number 1!
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: Continue to play PAW, managing a few tournaments, results will come it's only question of time!

#10: rrfnpump
Rank @ Start of 2010: 64
Current Rank: 26
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 5 (2008 Guangzhou, 2007 Tokyo, 2007 Wimbledon, 2006 Acapulco, 2004 Guangzhou)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 110th; Roland Garros- 51st; Wimbledon- 34th; US Open- 4th
In a Nutshell: Another tour veteran, rrfnpump has reached world number one (for 11 weeks), won a grand slam in 2007 (Wimbledon), and has 5 career titles; however, he/she has failed to win a title yet in 2010. He did, however, have a relatively successful year, especially in the second half of the year, placing 4th at the US Open and managing to climb almost 40 spots.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I am very happy about my 2010 season after I really struggled in 2009 and 2008. Just too much pressure after my win at Wimbledon in 2007. But this year I had a very solid season reaching four finals and another three semifinals. I felt a little bit tired after the US Open and skipped the whole Asian season, but now I am looking forward participating in Bali!
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: The best part was of course reaching the semifinals at the US Open. And finals at Indian Wells. But overall I am happy with the whole 2010 season.
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I hope I can win a title again, that would be nice.

#11: In the Zone
Rank @ Start of 2010: 8
Current Rank: 27
2010 Titles: 1 (Fes)
Career Titles: 2 (2010 Fes, 2009 Osaka)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 25th; Roland Garros- 58th; Wimbledon- 14th; US Open- 33rd
In a Nutshell: Yet another tour veteran, former number two in the world (this year) In the Zone has dropped almost 20 spots in the rankings this year, but still managed to get a title (Fes). In addition, he/she has managed to have many great finishes at smaller tournaments, and relatively good grand slam results, but hasn't really had that big break-through tournament, yet.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I felt it was a great season. I reached #2 in the world for one week before the French Open. I won my second title in Fes and had a few finals. Besides the little ranking dip after the French (defending 09 Final), I was very satisfied with my year.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Reaching #2!
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: Get back into the top ten, hopefully five. Start competing better at the bigger events

#12: petey_pan
Rank @ Start of 2010: 141
Current Rank: 28
2010 Titles: 1 (Memphis)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Memphis)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 27th; Roland Garros- 60th; Wimbledon- 7th; US Open- 38th
In a Nutshell: Another rookie, petey_pan has jumped over 100 spots in the rankings this year, and won his/her first title in Memphis. That, plus several top ten finishes (including Wimbledon) has put him/her in position to finish the year in the top 25 with a good finish here.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I have had my breakthrough year after a few years of only playing part-time. I had never been able to string good picks together in the past but I have had good consistent results this year.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: My highlight of the year was winning my first title in Memphis with all 13 picks correct! Also making the top 8 of Wimbledon was very exciting.
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: Although i will have a lot of points to defend in 2011 I think I can rise as I am fairly confident with my picks now after such a good year in 2010.

#13: delicatecutter
Rank @ Start of 2010: 56
Current Rank: 29
2010 Titles: 1 (Portoroz)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Portoroz)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 24th; Roland Garros- 26th; Wimbledon- 6th; US Open- 65th
In a Nutshell: A self-proclaimed Suicide Tennis expert, delicatecutter managed to win his first title this year in Portoroz, as well as finish inside the top ten at Wimbledon. In addition, his ranking, which started the year outside the top 50, has managed to jump into the top 30. Perhaps with a good finish here, he will think better of PAW!
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: I think it was a pretty good season for me. PAW is somewhat frustrating but I think I did well. Very surprised to see that I qualified for Bali but here I am lol
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Definitely finally winning my fist tournament in Portoroz. I had played 3 years and had never won a tournament; I don't even think I had ever been a Runner-Up. It had gotten to the point that I was thinking of retiring once I finally won a damn title lol
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I don't have any expectations really. I would love to win another title and just improve my ranking.

#14: Frooty_Bazooty
Rank @ Start of 2010: NA
Current Rank: 30
2010 Titles: 2 (Copenhagen, Moscow)
Career Titles: 4 (2010 Copenhagen, 2010 Moscow, 2006 Palermo, 2004 Eastbourne)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- NA; Roland Garros- 23rd; Wimbledon- 70th; US Open- 11th
In a Nutshell: Frooty_Bazooty, who is a veteran of the tour from Dublin, did not actually begin playing this year until the French Open, and yet has still managed to qualify for Bali. Even though he has tried to focus more on ATP PAW, he has won 4 career titles (two this year), and finished inside the top 30 at the French Open and the US Open this year.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: Im pretty surprised actually because I only started the season at the French Open so I really didnt expect to have qualified for Bali! Winning Copenhagen and Moscow were highlights too. I've been focusing so hard on winning ATP PAW titles, which I havent done for almost 18 months, and in only 5 months back on the WTA PAW I've won 2 titles. it doesnt make any sense
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Being rejected for a WC into Luxembuorg and therefore having to stay with my original commitment of Moscow, which I ended up winning lol
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I dont really have any expectations but I also dont have any points to defend until the French Open so I should hopefully continue to rise up the rankings for the first 6 months.

#15: MH0861
Rank @ Start of 2010: 63
Current Rank: 31
2010 Titles: 0
Career Titles: 1 (2008 Tokyo)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 54th; Roland Garros- 41st; Wimbledon- 76th; US Open- 22nd
In a Nutshell: Although MH0861 managed to climb 32 spots in the rankings this year, he/she did not finish inside the top 40 at any slam but the US Open (where he/she placed 22nd), and did not win a title. However, he/she has been very consistent at the small tournaments and looks to place well here and finish inside the top 30.

#16: Shi Feng
Rank @ Start of 2010: 170
Current Rank: 32
2010 Titles: 1 (Kuala Lumpur)
Career Titles: 1 (2010 Kuala Lumpur)
Grand Slams: Aus Open- 11th; Roland Garros- 48th; Wimbledon- 36th; US Open- 56th
In a Nutshell: Shi Feng is another tour rookie who managed to jump almost 140 spots in the rankings in 2010. Surprising, he/she did so with only one title and only 1 top 35 finish at the slams (11th at the Australian Open).
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: 2010 is my break-through season. I started with no rank and won my first title in Kuala Lumpur and now am qualified for Bali. I never thought I would have achieved so much in my first season in PAW.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: Win the title in Kuala Lumpur and qualified for Bali
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: I hope to win a Premium or high event's title and break into top 20 in 2011.

Grand Slams: Aus Open- 35th; Roland Garros- 25th; Wimbledon- 41st; US Open- 42nd
In a Nutshell: Bennyko., formerly Hantu, won only one tournament this year, but it was a big one (Miami). Unfortunately, he/she failed to make it inside the top 25 at any slam this year, and has fallen over 10 spots in the rankings this year, just missing qualifying for Bali.

In a Nutshell: Surprisingly, Buitenzorg is one of (if not THE) most accomplished player at this year's championships, and he is only an alternate! A former grand slam champion, Buitenzorg is tied for 5th on the all-time rankings for most PAW titles, and actually one the Year-End Championships back in 2006. He will be looking for two people to pull out so he can participate here.
How do you feel about the 2010 season? Why?: Honestly, I wasn't happy with my performance this year, I was so busy with my work and study therefore I didn't even try hard enough to do well not only at this game but also any other wtaworld games.
What was the best part of 2010, for you?: I don't have any best moment.part for this year, all of them were ordinary, not worthy to mention at all. [Since he can't come up with a best moment, I'll mention one for him-- he is "Mr. 33," finishing 33rd at three different slams  As well as 32nd at Roland Garros. Although those may not be the best results, you've gotta give him credit for consistency! :p]
What are your expectations for the 2011 season?: Well obviously to get back into TOP 10 rank player, or even get back to TOP 3 (my career high rank was #2 I think) and win titles.

Match for 3rd place

Did that happen last year as well?

Match for 3rd place

Did that happen last year as well?

No, because it was a round robin event last year. I checked with the 2008 Beijing Olympics (the last time I could think that there would've been a third place match...) and players were allowed to pick the 3rd place match in that tournament.

Thanks Thomas for your God-like managing ability! This was a fun event. I'd be much better at PAW under pick 5 of 8 match formats. :o This win should get me close to the Top 20!
