Only few cheer on Vika and she lost...

The whole world could cheer for Vika and she wouldn't hear it over her own shriek...

I thought Caro just needs to beat either Sam or Fran? has something changed?

(Disclaimer... I have nothing against Vika except for that cheating fake shriek.)

Now only the hope Kim can beat Vera or Caro wins her last matches...

I get the feeling Kim will be way too strong for Vera...

Anyhow... Caro will no doubt want to do this on her own merit, and hopefully she can step up and outplay Sam, and Fran. She needs to beat the old guard sooner or latter so now would be a good time to stamp her authority?

Jorn
Oct 27th, 2010, 06:36 PM
Now Kim plays Vika tomorrow so SF places can be decided before Kim vs Vera, so it may be a 'wierd' match about winning 100.000 extra... But Caro still need one win in RR to be sure No. 1, what will be tough...

Carol has won 5 tournaments since August and get the number one. What more do you want? Tomorrow Carol will win, don´t worry.
To actually play like a top player on hard court, to beat the players she should beat on hard court, and to not crash out in round robin as the #1 seed and #1 ranked player in the world.

Caro hasn't crashed out yet. If she beats Fran 2-0 tomorrow she's 99% certain of advancing to the SF. Today wasn't a good day, but a Stosur in form is a fearsome opponent. And I agree with Poi; Caro has given us so much the last couple of months (far more than I expected after Wimbledon) and has lost only 2 matches in 6 tournaments, both against top 10 players/GS RUPs. You're acting like a fairweather fan right now.

I think you need to read her rank as incidental to her development. She may well be number 1, and her game has / is improving... She is however still only 20 and today that showed again... Its all just a growing and maturing process... you learn from your mistakes... and as long as she is aware she had the upper hand in this match, but through it away by loosing focus after an error... then she will get over that mental hurdle and move on to better days. The hardest part for a 20 yo is understanding where the mistakes are.

She was making something happen... she was pushing sam around and tactically beating her... Alas she went for a winner and missed... That resulted in some racquet abuse... and loss of focus for long enough... at the worst possible point in the set.

She needs to channel these moments into positives... At the time of her miss she had Stosur mentally on the ropes. Alas she let him of the hook.

That's a good point. I don't think anyone thought that between Wimbledon and the YEC that Caroline was going to win five tournaments. Five tournaments is impressive for a year and she did it in three months. She's been doing so well lately that our expectations may be a little too high. However, she still had a chance to win that first set and she let it slip away. I don't expect her to win every match but the way she lost was a little disappointing.

I think most people would agree that the last few months Caroline has been on a tremendous hot streak but realistically it is not going to continue. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think she is going to keep winning like this for much longer. That's not to say that she is going to do bad next year but I think the last few months have been the exception and not the norm. It will be interesting to see how she reacts when she starts losing more often and how she rebounds. Hopefully next year she gets hot at one (or more) of the slams and is able to win one. I know I'd be happy if she "only" won half as many tournaments next year if one of them is a slam.

But back to the present, she still has a good chance to advance to the semi final and I expect she will be very determined to win tomorrow. She knows she can beat Schiavone she just has to come out and play a solid couple of hours and she should advance.

Agreed, but I think the streak has be going for a lot longer than the last few months... We may see some wobbles as she introduces new aspects to her game, but the trend will be upwards for a long while.

I hope she reaches the next stage too, and comes out with a rebound like the one after that bizarre, error fest, Vika encounter...

Bring your dance tomorrow Caro...

There are still expectations that go with the position and I don't think most folks will see her age as making that ok.

Sharapova had won 2 grand slams at Caro's age and Kuznetsova a slam so I'm not comfortable with using Caro's age as an excuse.

I would have thought she'd be confident enough that she could shrug off a mistake.

I think what's important isn't the hot streak per se but rather improvements/changes Caro made. Caro needs to continue doing these things and incorporate them into her normal play.

I hear you... but as we have seen for Caro it dose seem to be a factor... People are different... Some get homesick, others thrive in the wild, and Caro seems to grow bit by bit mentally with experience... Remember the us Open final? maybe once she gets that first majors win it will be the mental breakthrough she needs? She dose seem to take it in steps though, rebuilding her game, building on it progressively but slowly...

So not an excuse, it just an observation based on looking at her body language over time.

And I agree she should be winning games like today. She almost looked annoyed that Sam wouldn't give her the prise today... and didn't seem to cope when her efforts went astray.
"She is different to the other girls because she serves almost as well as a man" was Caro's reply?

Who knows? I have never seen any point in comparing her to past players because the game changes all the time. What worked in 1980 wouldn't win squat today?

You mean her muscles? Her game was nothing special today, but at this level you need to be 100% focused. Take away Sam's power and whats left?

The similarity to the USO SF in my mind is how Caro also had big trouble breaking Zvonareva's serve, missing most of her chances because though her opponent wasn't on fire the whole match she knew how to raise her game at the important points and outserved Caro on most BPs.
Stosur is certainly far from a complete player but she does a couple of things extremely well; movement, serve, FH. Stosur won many points either right on serve or because Caro couldn't return deep enough, allowing SS to put her under pressure from the beginning of the point. The Doha court is also sufficiently slow to allow the Ausie to often move around her rather weak BH and hit her heavy FH instead. Clay is obviously her best surface - don't forget she beat both Henin and Serena at FO - but when her serve is on she mustn't be disregarded at slow HCs, either.
No, Caro's loss wasn't inevitable. She was well in the match until 4-4 30-30 where she did seem to lose her focus after missing that easy winner. In the next game she suddenly missed most of her 1st serves after having missed only 2 in the previous 4 serve games. Obviously she needs to learn how better to put a mistake behind her quick and focus on the next point immediately. This is an ability for instance Clijsters seems to have. Hopefully Caro'll learn it as well as she gets more experienced.

NB: What I said about Caro being 99% sure of advancing if she beats Fran 2-0 isn't quite true. I've done the math now and she'll be 100% sure. Even in the worst case scenario Caro'll have a good enough game score thanks to her big win over Elena to at least finish 2nd. Of course if Sam beats Elena Caro just has to win, 2-0 or 2-1 won't matter. If Elena against expectation is able to beat Sam 2-0 Caro can still win the group by beating Fran 2-0.

Great break for Caroline. Fran looks deflated and I think if she had clawed her way back into that game it would have given her a big confidence boost. The match is now Caroline's to win. She looks much more positive and I think if she can hold she has got the match won.

1-0. Caro breaks on 4th BP. FS was very lucky on 3rd BP; her shot was going out but hit the net and went in.

2-1. Incredible last point from FS! I hope it doesn't raise her spirit too much.
