Odds On

Sharapova is the clear favourite (W - Toronto, New Haven, RU - Cincinnati) and is the defending champion, she proved at RG that she can win a Slam with 0 aces, with 4 the top seed will be an overwhelming favourite. Melanie Oudin is clearly a challenger to the title, being the only player to beat Sharapova on hard this season and Tanasugarn, with two major titles under her belt, knows what it takes, she'll need to ready to take on the Russian powerhouse, however.

Solid Bets

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_80394.jpg http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_160391.jpg http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_100153.jpg

Hantuchova has never won a title on the ATC, but is a solid performer, and I'm certain her breakthrough is coming, she'll need to be bold and take some more risks if she wants to beat the best however, Pennetta usually performs on the big stage and was the runner-up here last season and Jankovic was a dominant force on hard before, maybe it's finally time for her to win the one hard-court title that still escapes her.
Outside Chance

A Star Is Born

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_GWJatwb-WlI/SqLkqPbrggI/AAAAAAAAKeE/cOnMJQADIi8/s400/oudin-sharapova-usopen09.jpg

19 year old American Melanie Oudin provided the upset of the 2010 U.S. Open, defeating world number one and two-time defending champion Maria Sharapova. The two battled for nearly 2 hours, but the American newcomer prevailed 6-2,7-6(7-5). The counterpuncher used her movement and forehand to dictate play, which caused Sharapova to go for broke, too early. "I stuck with my gameplan like I have been all summer and I have had great results. I have been working really hard on just improving my game, especially with the indoor season approaching."

Oudin bursted on the scene winning her first tournament she played in at Cincinnati, but flamed out the next week in Toronto. She pulled it together before losing in 3 sets to friend Tamarine Tanasugarn. "I have had a nice few weeks on the tour. It's different from the juniors, but this is the big leagues, it should. I have a great support team who is leading me into ATC really well," said Oudin. Her coach Joey and her mentor Ashley Harkleroad, S1 U.S. Open champion, were on hand to see Oudin dazzle the American crowd. "She played so well, playing better than her last upset of Maria," spoke Harkleroad.

Now as the lone American left in her home Grand Slam, Melanie is more motivated then ever to win. "I would love to win a Grand Slam, that and to become number one have always been a dream of mine." Oudin plays Hantuchova of Slovakia today on Arthur Ashe for a spot in the semi-finals.

Nastya Takes Home Second Slam
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/545/8556053myskina.jpg
Flushing Meadows, New York

Anastasia Myskina did the unthinkable, win the US Open title on her 2nd worst surface, hardcourts. Nastya took down some formidable opponents, all of which were hardcourt lovers; Tanasugarn, Cibulkova, Jankovic, Zvonareva.
Myskina was coming into the US Open on little confidence and few wins since her defeat in the Roland Garros Final earlier this spring. Since that loss to Sharapova she went 4-7.
"It was rough. I went into Roland Garros the huge favorite, got to the final and lose to Sharapova. It was a very depressing time for me. I love Roland Garros and had such an amazing clay season, making the finals of Amelia Island and then winning Rome and Strasbourg. I thought it was my time to win Roland Garros after losing such tight matches there in the late stages since I won it for the first time in Season 2. But it wasn't meant to be and I then kind of went into a slump. I just went on to court and just hit the ball, didn't really want to fight to win and it showed with me losing more than half the time."
Nastya was able to turn it around though here in New York in her first match against Jankovic.
"I just came into this event and said, this isn't my favorite surface, but at the same time this the last slam of the year and I want to do my best."
Myskina would knock out Jankovic for the second time this hardcourt season, 6-4 3-6 7-5. Saving a match point at 4-5 in the third.
"She was leading, but I didn't give up, for the first time really since the clay season. I was down match point, but hit a great backhand winner. And it just motivated me."
Nastya would then set up a clash with the woman who beat her in the SFs of the Australian Open, Zvonareva. Myskina clawed her way back from 3-5 down in the first to take it 7-5. But ran out of gas a bit as Vera just pushed her around the court with ease to take the second 6-3. In the third, Nastya trailed 5-4 once again, but saved the match point and took it 7-5.
"It feels great to be able to once again save match point, just not give in so easily. Vera is a good friend, and it's tough to see her lose, but great to pick up another win and boost my confidence."
Nastya would then shock everyone when she beat one of the hottest players during the hardcourt season, Tamarine Tanasugarn. Tammy showed what she was made of this whardcourt season in the first set, just pounding winners to take it 6-4. But she would lead 3-5 in both of the final sets, but Nastya would once again save the match points and bring home the win.
"It just feels amazing. Tammy has played so well, and did again in this match, and to be able to fight out the win. Just amazing. I am so happy to get another shot at winning a slam this year."
In the Final, Nastya would play her bitch Cibulkova.
"I have never lost to her, and beat her earlier this hardcourt season, 4-6 7-5 7-5 or so, so I feel good about my chances."
Cibulkova steam rolled Nastya 6-1 4-0 before Nastya got it right back to 4-4. But Domi would hold for 5-4. Nastya would be down one match point on serve, but saved it with surprisingly an ace. She would then get pumped from saving the MP, and just play more freely on Ashe, as the crowd got behind her. Nastya sent a backhand down the line that painted the line to take the 2nd set 7-5. But Nastya would call the trainer about a blister on her foot. And the third set, she just seemed out of it and tired from all her 3 set thrillers this week. Down 4-0, it just as the 2nd set, seemed to click for Nastya as she just started going for her shots again and landing them to make it 4-3. But Domi would then get the break of Nastya's serve to lead 5-3, but Nastya would save 2 more match points before winning it herself 7-5.
"When I nailed that drop shot to win the match, I just couldn't believe this fairytale week wasn't a dream. I just gave it my all and it payed off. I had a problem with blisters in the third set because I just played so much this week that I was just getting worn out, but I didn't want to leave New York without the title."
Nastya wins her 2nd slam and 6th ATC title. This spectacular fairytale week for Nastya could send her up to #2 or #3 in the ranks which would be her career high ranking.

"Shit happens." - said Cibulkova after losing the US Open final.

"I did more than anyone expected me to do. Congrats to Myskina. She played alright, really. I guess, working with new coach Piotr Wozniacki paid off. She pushed her way for the title."
