Great draw!! Only Kremer in front of a home crowd may pose problems, Zvenoreva if she gets to the semis and a great Maleeva/Dechy in the finals.

It's Kim for the taking :)

I really hope she doesn't get upset in the early rounds, cause this is a GR8 draw!!! She should be able to win this easily, but since she's been ill & playing so many matches, she could get upset by some surpise player. Well let's hope not! :D

Clijsters, Maleeva reach quarterfinals in Luxembourg

October 23, 2002

LUXEMBOURG (Sportsticker) -- Kim Clijsters and Magdalena Maleeva, the top two seeds of the $225,000 Seat Open, cruised to the quarterfinals with straight-sets triumphs on Wednesday.

Clijsters, the top seed from Belgium and two-team defending Seat Open champion, easily defeated Italian qualifier Magui Serna, 6-3, 6-1. Maleeva, the second seed from Bulgaria, beat crowd favorite Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg, a wild card, 6-3, 7-5.

Not as fortunate was fifth seed Lisa Raymond of the United States, who was upset by Tina Pisnik of Slovenia, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in their second-round encounter.

The four remaining first-round matches were completed Wednesday, with one seeded player failing to reach to second round. Nathalie Dechy of France, the No. 4 seed, suffered a left thigh strain and retired from her match with Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia after splitting the first two sets.

Seventh-seeded Elena Bovina of Russia posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, No. 8 seed Janette Husarova of Slovakia handily defeated French qualifier Emilia Loit, 6-3, 6-1 and Vera Zvonareva of Russia beat Italy's Rita Grande, 6-2, 6-3.

First prize is $35,000.

Clijsters through to Luxembourg semis

LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - Top seed Kim Clijsters has overwhelmed American Laura Granville 6-0 6-4 to go through to the semi-finals of the Luxembourg Open.

Earlier in the day, Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano fought hard to win the first set of her quarter-final match, crushing eighth seed opponent Janette Husarova in the second, 7-6 6-1.

She faces Belgian Clijsters on Saturday.

Katarina Srebotnik sailed through to the semis, defeating fellow Slovene Tina Pisnik 6-4 6-3. She faces Magdalena Maleeva who overcame Russian Elena Bovina 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Clijsters takes home third title of year
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reuters
LUXEMBOURG -- Top seed Kim Clijsters successfully defended her Seat Open title by routing Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva 6-1, 6-2 in Sunday's final.

Second seed Maleeva could do little to stem the flow of powerful winners generated by Clijsters, who also won the title as a 16-year-old qualifier in 1999.

"I don't know why, but winning here this year seems even more special than winning the first two," said a jubilant Clijsters.

"I love coming to Luxembourg so much -- I have very special memories having won my very first title here in '99 and each year it's always nice to come back and see familiar faces and good friends."

Having won her third title -- after Hamburg and Filderstadt -- of the year, Clijsters joined fellow Belgian Justine Henin in the winners' circle this week. Henin triumphed in Linz, Austria, earlier on Sunday.

Maleeva, who was also runner-up to Jennifer Capriati in 2000, added: "There was not a lot I could do out there today. Kim was doing everything very well today and my timing was a little off. She gave me very few chances."

making the round-up, there wasn't really much interesting in the press re the final.

Clijsters proved to be the athletic, energetic and focused player.

What I think I have missed here, is something about Kim's speech.

As usual, she made a long speech, thanking everyone she could think of: :D :hearts:

the sponsors (even naming the smaller ones LOL), the ballboys and -girls, the tournament organisers, the hotel for their care, and for the food (Kim even gave thanks for the spaghetti :D ), her family (even one of her grandfathers was there, she said thanks to each family member who was there to watch her), the public,...
