Post match results who she beat and why it was her best tennis. Not just a set but an entire match. If you have video awesome :)

NOTE: You fave's 100% best tennis just doesn't mean a good score line. It doesn't count if their opponent totally sucked and just gave them the match or was just spraying errors everywhere.

Jelena def. Woz at this years Indian Wells was pretty awesome.

Both these matchees don't count. LOL Jelena played like UTTER SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Justine was apparently afraid to play Venus or some shit. If Jelena was playing half decent she would have beat Marion. She lost a 4-6 set playing like Brie! And if Justine was playing half decent she would have won in straights or the 3rd set 6-0

This match is not any near my faves' best tennis objectively, but it for me her "defining moment", and it displayed some of the characteristics that later on have proven her tennis to be some of the best there is !

Background: Just before Caro's USO 2008 she met Alizé, then WTA #18, in the New Haven Pilot Pen SF. Caro won first set 75 and after being down 03 in second, fought her way back to 64. What I saw in particular was not only Caro's excellent defensive skills and agile footwork, but also her fighting mentality when she fought her way back in that second set.

So I really looked forward to her USO performance, peaking at her 3R match against Azarenka, who was at that time (together with Alizé and Aga who Caro just beat at her first WTA trophy at Stockholm) part of the top 20 establishment, a little ahead of Caro.
The night match from the start turned into an intense fight with long rallies, Azarenka dominating from the baseline, while Caro defending and with a mix of FH topspin, and BH crosscourt / pass, trying to force more UE's from Vika. Which she did, the match ending 64 64. Again, I was amazed by her winning mentality.

One final trademark to add is that in the next match she of course got spanked by JJ 63 26 16 !!!

I would say the Beijing 2007 final. It was a good match by both for most of it, although JJ got a little bit hurt, but Ágnes played amazing that day from 1-5 down in the second (and before that too, just not in a dominating way) and it also showed the AMAZING mental toughness she used to have.

Well it's obviously hard to play when you're just slicing your serve back into play against someone like Serena... Unless from the Camille Pin match in some unsupportable heat Maria, the n°1 seed, was heads and shoulders the better player of the tournament but just didn't deliver much in the final... especially on serve. It's the combination of Maria serving average and Serena playing reasonable tennis that gives the illusion that Serena was untouchable.

You know what they say about the house leaks from the roof down?

Well, that serve went away, which exposed more movement than it did before, then she gained a little bit of her weight back, then a lot of it, then we had a bigger Ana trying to play slightly more defensive tennis, and well....you know she ain't built for that to begin with....then we had a mess of trying to work on her backhand which actually made it worse, and then she had Dementieva ball tosses....

Get the picture?

For me, Ana's best match was against Sharapova at RG 2007....while I admit Sharapova's level was down and on her worst surface, Ana could have easily just said "I'm going to go into nervous Ana mode" but she didn't, and she came out guns blazing.

That's her best one this year that I've seen;

She played great against Jelena in Madrid last year. She was spot on in both her matches vs Bartoli and Chakvetadze back in Linz 2007.

Apparently her match with Srebotnik at the US open a few years ago was very high quality. Of course, I missed it

And She probably put in some wonderful performances back in 2002 and 1998 that most of us on here haven't seen because of our age/ they are not availabe on the net. I'd love to see the 2002 Zurich open final.

Yep, which is why I picked that one as one of her best. Lindsay could not give Kim any errors and had to play amazing tennis to win. Lindsay's played amazing tennis in dozens of other matches against other players but what makes this one stand out is that she played really amazing tennis against one of the players that gave her a lot of trouble in her career who was also playing great tennis.

It would be easy to say Lindsay's best was the double bagel against Maria in Indian Wells but that match was a lot closer than the score (lots of deuces if I recall correctly) and Maria was playing like crap.

Serena def. Mauresmo Wimbledon 2002 62 61.

Scary stuff from Serena. The quality of her serving, return and ground game were spot on and dynamically interacted to produce a display which overwhelmed Mauresmo, who was playing really well herself - and on quite a roll after beating Capriati.

When Serena's game comes together like this she really is in a league of her own. Even her lobs were perfect - I remember, she hit one of the most accurate lobs you will ever see to win an important point.

Venus Williams def. Maria Sharapova Wimbledon 2005 (The Wimbledon 2007 match had a score of 6-1 6-3, but I thought the 2005 match more represented who Venus was as a player)

--------------

[CLAY] Serena def. Mauresmo RG 2002
[GRASS] Serena def. Mauresmo Wimbledon 2002 Since not many people have seen that match, it was an even cleaner version of the following match -
[GRASS] Serena def. Henin Wimbledon 2003 [Highlights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDE8SdU2cok&feature=player_embedded)]
[Hardcourt] Serena def. Sharapova Australian Open 2007. [Highlights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcsm3qHk6QY)]

Seriously, we will never again see a player with that much power in her arsenal, combined with those sharp angles, stunning returns, godly hserves, amazing movement and a champion's mentality [Even hear weakest area (her footwork) was pretty damn good in her peak period, watch her dance around the ball in the Wimbledon 2003 match] .

Serena's game has risks in it, if she is playing a clean match, she will try to change up things to get more practice, thats why she made errors even in her peak, but she took the match away from you like no other player does. She was so unplayable at times that even THE elite ball striker (who commands the flow of matches) like Lindsay Davenport said 'When Serena is playing well, I used to go out there and just hope to win a couple of games'. We have seen a lot of powerful baseliners , but none of them comes even remotely close to the other aspects in Serena's game.

I'm a Maria fan and really became one after watching the AO semis against Serena in 2005. She lost but such a fun match. I think it was at that point that Serena decided that Maria was never going to beat her again.

Dementieva vs S. Williams at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. Elena was simply a brick wall. Her best for me, even if she lost.
Henin vs S. Williams and Henin vs V. Williams at the 2007 US Open. Henin downing both Williamses back to back was a sight to behold, and the sisters weren't even playing badly.
Sharapova vs Henin at the 2008 Australian Open. Maria played immaculately. I honestly believe that not even Serena will be able to defeat Maria at that tournament.

Considering Ivanovic played Maria tough in the finals, it´s very probable to assume Serena would have found ways to win, of course, top notch Serena needed to show up..

Do you mean "What match has Vika not retired or choked away?"

In that case, not many. Her best this year was her loss to Serena at the AO. She played gutsy, aggressive tennis and proved that she is the only young gun that can hang with Serena at a slam.

In terms of past years, I'd say her FO '09 win over Ivanovic and loss to Safina really stand out. Her best set was definitely against Dinara in that quarterfinal. Dina had been destroying her competition and Vika dominated that set. I think she hit 1 UE? She was hitting clean and deep shots, serving well, and drop shotting and getting to the net as well.

I remember after that set thinking Vika was going to win the whole tournament. Then of course she choked it away in the end of the second set.

Then of course she choked it away in the end of the second set.

It wasn't really a choke. After a set and a half, Safina really woke up and did what she had to against Victoria and stopped her being able to hit with the same force she had been throughout the first half of the match. It was a really good match.

Siilar thing with Serena vs. Victoria this year, you couldn't really see Victoria doing anything differently but Serena was refusing to lose and went into overdrive.

Also, despite the blow out scorelines I don't think 2009 RG Safina was all that impressive up until the quarters, except maybe the second set of her match against Pavlyuchenkova.

That match was so good.

For Tatiana, I think it would probably be vs Vaidisova at Zurich in 2006 or 2007 Suttgart SF vs Sveta. The Vaidisova match was ridiculous though. Even Serena would've been proud of Tatiana's serving that day. It was unreal.
Oh I forgot about Vaidisova match.

Dinara picked up her game and had a break in the second set (if I remember right, Vika was down 2-4) but then Vika raised her own game again and broke back to 4-4. Then she choked away her service game and lost the set 6-4. So although I think that was Dinara's best match that tournament, it still felt like a match that Vika should have won to me.

Dementieva d Serena in the Olympics. 9 games in a row when down a set and a break.
Zvonareva, her one title above Int'l, beating Ivanovic easily

Are you kidding? She hit like 3 winners the whole match. The wind did most of the work for her. :tape:

Anyway to answer the question, I believe Elena played her best tennis against Serena at 2009 Wimbledon even though she ended up losing.

Yeah, I mean, more than her game, which was pretty much on (especially the serve and return of serve), it was her body language and atittude that striked me the most. She was ridiculously insane that night, all those stares, she was just an intimidating factor. I think Sharapova stood really well although the heavy score line, some other player might would have been left in tears.

Actually, I think this was the turning point for me, this was when I started liking Sharapova.

Oh and I just realized the thread was about our faves. Although I posted Serena's, I am not a fan, at all!

For Venus I have some troubles but I would say her match against Henin in Australian Open 2003 was very, very good stuff from her.

Safina was awful in that match. Really didn't give Venus much to do in that

I liked vs Navarro and Radwanska. Lots of really long rallies with on the slower grass with Venus coming out on top. Putting rest the idea that Venus is only successful on grass because the points are short.

Exactely 2007 was far from her best according to me
She used to play regularly like that back in 2002

But since 2003 we had lost the habits to watch her play at this level which gave the illusion that it was her best EVER when it clearly wasnt

Szavay - JJ, Beijing 2007 final
Szavay - Hantuchova, Paris 2008 quarterfinal

Agree. Agnes can/could play great tennis.

Someone mentioned Patty´s US Open win over in-form Srebotnik. It was a great match from Patty. Actually I feared like never before Patty was gonna beat Elena. For me Patty played the best tennis of her life. Then she didnt play as well against Lena.

Dementieva´s 100% matches:
2005 Filderstadt comes to my mind. There probably never has been a match in which Lena hit more BH DTL winners than in this one.
2009 Wimby SF
2008 the quaterfinal with Serena I didnt see. But coming from 36,24* to 36,64,50* is incredible against someone like Serena.
2010 this year the best she´s played was some periods in her Stosur match. The intensity was higher than ever. She really had to be agressive.

I think i saw some highlights of that beatdown she gave to Wozniacki last year. Was impressive too.

The Tokyo final..i saw it re-live the next morning and wasnt that overwhelmed, maybe bc i already knew the result

Hantuchova - 2002 IW final, the Linz final against Schnyder, her YEC RR against Kuzzie, the IW final against Kuzzie and the AO first part against Ivanovic was probably best ever. This year the match against Venus she could/should have won.

Janette Husarova - the 60,62 FC win over ASV (Should have been 60,60 but the pathetic fan interrupted the match for like 10 mins at 50 second set.)

Rybarikova - her FC loss to an inform Vaidisova (bad calls against mentally weak Magda)
