The real #1 was Coetzer. Amazing that someone who made Hingis look like a big babe physically could make it to #3 in the World, thrash the great Graf a few times, beat Hingis late in the year, make 2 slam semis, and probably narrowly miss winning the French Open that year.

Hingis always pwned Coetzer  The record is like 10-2 and Amanda's 2 victories were extremely tight 3 setters

Initially yes, but it's more a response for all the threads selesisqueen has been making.

first off, this thread is stupid--hingis was the best player of 1997. in fact, it was one of the most dominating performances ever.
that said, why do you have to hate on majoli for now reason in your poll? she was top10 already in 96, she's beaten almost everyone there is to beat in that generation, she didn't exactly have a cakewalk into the rg finals and she played a hell of a match when she got there

She made it to number 3 for grand total of 1 week.
She trashed Graf? Graf trashed herself with 40+ unforced errors in straight sets losses.
Amanda was highly overrated in 1997, and that fluke of a year never repeated in her entired carreer.

She was a great top 15 player thought, tough to beat competitive and complete, great at the baseline and at the net.. very good doubles player..... Now that i think about it, she is better than some of the top 10 players today. not a surprise :p

Gaby would have kicked ass with no decent Steffi around. If injury and boredom hadn't forced her to retire, she'd have won 3-4 slams that year. Gaby was real number 1 for 1997 even though she wad retired.

:worship: Indeed. Venus would not have reached that Usopen final either :bounce:
