The Aussie Open on the grass was the main reason grass courts have gone the way of the dinosaurs.
IMO, grass should never have as many bad bounces as clay.

Why?
No rational justification.

It is just one of those association that one form by habits.
To my mind, Aussie Open (sticky) hard court, unbearable heat, free, vociforous crowd.

I have come to associate grass with restrain, reverence, protocols, formalities, stiffness, etc..

All of these are anti-thesis of Aussie and US Open cultures

As I said, here is no cogent, rational justification. Just habit forming overtime.

I for one am glad that each major has forged its own identify with a different surface.

Any other major having grass was like playing second fiddle to Wimbledon.

I liked the Steelers T-shirt on Renee Richards the best. Tennis was OK.
