An ugly win ? Really ?

Judging from the stats, Caro lost only 2 points on serve in the second set !!! ;)

Well, she never attacked her opponent second serves, she committed some very stupid mistakes with her forehand, seemed to be in the 2nd gear all the match : it wasn't a good quality match at all ! A luck Arn hit tons of errors ! If my memory serves well, Caroline next opponent will be Pavlyuchenkova : it will be a tougher test than the one of today.

lucky she only played Greta, if she had played Dementieva for example she would of been in a bit of trouble.
congrats on the win though caro!

Yes and it will be their 5th H2H match on the Tour, and the 4th in 2010 alone.

Good win for Caroline. :clap2: It was far from her best performance, but with the way some of my favorites has looked in Tokyo, i`ll take what i can get.

Second set was a bit better than the 1st even she served a breadstick to Arn ! All I hope she'll get up at least a gear against " Baby fat ". But a win is a win ! That's all that count but at quality level, I'm sure she can do much better than what she showed today, that's it :)

BTW, When I watch Arn from the TV I think sometimes that she is Vaidisova, she remind me (not the face but the body and the shots) Nicole...

I would call it an impressive win.

that's not because you won 1 and 3 it was obviously impressive and a high quality match ! You may have in soccer a match ending 4-0 but except the goals, you didn't see much.

What she did today : Le nécessaire et suffisant ( don't know how to translate it in English ) ... At times Caroline looked rusty but of course that only is my opinion.

I thought it was an ugly win. She did what she had to. But Arn succeeded in achieving the impossible - serving worse than Masha. She was serving an absolute plethora of double faults. Woz was as consistent as ever, and on the odd occasion she thought she might take a step outside the comfort zone and go for a winner, only to find it didn't work.

Caro explicitly adjusts her game to her opponent.
So why should she eg. attack more on the second serv, when Arn only won 32% anyway (10/31) ? It might not always be pretty or "good quality" but it is part of the reason why she is relatively consistent against lower ranked opponents.

I watched it from 5-1 up in the first til the end. I thought it was a good match from Caro. She served well, and hit her backhand really well. Her forehand was the only iffy shot, with lots of short balls. Solid win, next match.

She's been asked this question about why she does sometimes play more aggressively but usually doesn't - particularly when she could try to be more aggresive against lower ranked players. And she answered it's a combintion of things but mostly how she feels and there's some players she doessn't feel comfortable being more aggressive but some she does.

Coming off her USO SF defeat where she made an extraordinary number of UEs for her and on important points when she's normally so strong - she's probably not at her most confident. I'd like to see her become a bit more aggressive in more matches without sacrificing being miserly with UEs and still being strong on important points.

I agree on what your saying and often wish the same when she has a comfortable lead in second set against a lower ranked opponent and just sticks to her gameplan. So maybe she just really don't want to get herself into trouble in that kind of matches. Contrary in eg. Montreal where she played agressively in most matches.
Now when she's not playing doubles, I also tend to think that she could use that extra oncourt hitting in an "easy" match like this.

But what I meant in my post above is just that I don't expect/demand "high quality" every time I watch her matches in order to enjoy her playing, as long as it works for her.

I kind of had this match on in the background while doing chores, and can't really comment on the quality, but when I looked up, I thought that Caro looked, facially, really tired. More so than I've seen her look before. So maybe that's why she had to do just enough to win comfortably.
