Happy 40th Kimiko :bdaycake:
Daniela :hug::awww:

That second set was very very good.
As the ES commentator said, she plays such "uncomplicated" tennis

I just spent the last hour and a half with my racquet watching this match and trying to replicate kimiko's grip and grounstrokes and I don't get how she can hit so flat and accurately the way she does! Great match for Kimiko but Hantuchova clearly choked in the 2nd set and at some point hurt her shoulder.

Well done for sticking in there Kimiko which is all you have to do against mental midgets some times... Played badly in the first and much of the second really but then picked it up in the third. Daniela played well in the first and then imploded.

Oh and happy birthday! :bounce:

That being said Daniela should've won that match :o her tactic was good for the first set but after that... :o

eww, good start for Dani, great fir set, aggressive with some good netplay but then later it was really terrible, her serve was weak, almost no winners, UEs all the time while Kimiko played really consistent and nice tennis, as I expected it from her, but still, Daniela had all chances to win this but she just cant keep a good level over a whole match, donīt know what to think about retirement...congrats Kimiko anyway!

I'm not saying she faked the injury, but it awfully looks like she retired when she was fed up with the match and had no hope of winning it. If not she would have retired earlier in the match.

However, Daniela really should have stuck it out two more games, the retirement out of frustration is really ugly. :o

Sep 28th, 2010, 10:03 AM
I don't doubt that she's carrying an injury, but I'm sure the scoreline made it worse.

That was just a pathetic display. She already started choking at 5-1 in the first set, then carried that form on into the second. By this time Date started playing better and Daniela was just terrible.

Disgusting and classless by Hantuchova to take a bathroom break 4-0 down in the second. Idiot girl, wait until a change of ends.

Should have just retired sooner to help Kimiko conserve some energy. Really don't understand how that mantis has any fans.

As a Danka-fan I have to agree. What's the point in losing 1R or 2R every week? She kills herself and her fans with her brainless behaviour out there, she just can't play well thorough an entire match :o Shame on you Danka.

I dont know if I should be embarrassed as a fan of someone faking an injury, or concerned if it's anything serious. People are saying it looked fake, but Dani has never retired before like that - why start now?

Either way, you're still stupid Dani. Playing as well as you did in the first set, you shouldn't have taken it to a 3rd set where you got (allegedly) injured. Rest up, and kick ass in Beijing! :)

Almost being double bagelled by a 40 year old is a good reason enough to start now.

Seriously, I don't think she "faked" her injury, but she could have finished the match. She simply didn't want to be DB.

Extremely pleased to see Kimiko in the 3rd round. Nicely done. :bounce: And of course happy birthday :aparty:

As for Dani, first and foremost I hope she is okay and whatever caused her to retire is not serious.

Secondly regarding the criticism about Dani retiring I have to say I have no problem with it at all. And I am sure neither will Kimiko. Look at it this way, at Kimiko's age I have no doubt that every few minutes less time that she can spend on the court winning a match is a bonus. Down 6-2 0-6 0-4 it would have done no one any favours at all had Dani chosen to finish this match. Seeing Kimiko win without spending a lot of time on court is always welcome.

Keep it going in the 3rd round now Kimiko, this can be a great tournament for you.

Dara Torres and Gail Devers are the only other ones I can think of.

Merlene Ottey won a bronze and silver in the 100m & 4x100m at the Sydney Olympics at the age of 40 & was also a semi finalist in 100m barely missing out in a spot in the final 4 years later in Athens. By the way she's still running and she's 50 - PB this season 11.67 which is almost a full second off the old over 50's World Record.
