I saw one article online about the semifinals and it seems to have been written by a 10 year-old. Everything was out-of-context, disjointed, and void of talent. Tennis journalism has been in the dirt for awhile, but there's no need to keep kicking a dead horse.

So ... what will Miki bring to this final? She has got to feel like a cat with nine lives after that semi. That's a good thing.

We may all need barbiturates before the end of this day. But a glass of wine will do in the meantime.

As long as I can see the sweet, smooth, buttery skin of Britney Spears, there is hope for the world.

And, how about 'Nine Lives Lucic' for a thread title? (Just kidding, obviously, but it's kind of apropos, if you think about it a li'l bit).

Yes. Duh.

But she is playing five more events this season, and all 50K or bigger (which was NOT the case last year), and will be seeded in each event, so don't rain on our parade!

She has 108 points to "meet" for the rest of the season, and then everything else she does is pure gravy for her in terms of going above the 115 ranking, no matter what points drop off.

Depending upon how this match goes, she could put herself in choice territory no matter what.

It is the year-end ranking that counts for her now, and I do mean December 31, 2010.

And she has almost no points to defend until Spring next year :)

Guys we have been talking about 100 points to defend since after Wimbledon.

Yes, darling angel, but you know better than any of us that it is the "timing" of this defense-of-points. The strategy is key.

Yes, indeed, those 108 friggin' points were out there forever at the tail-end of 09, but she needs to "position" herself for 2011 (and a MD Aussie Open berth) by specifically shoring-up her finish to this year. It's the whole game, the whole WTA thing, but in her case, it is crucial that she strategize for points in this particular way, at this ass-end of the season.

God, has she won the first set, yet? I am afraid to even look.

Mirjana did the good choice by playing those american ITF instead of Asian quallies.
She's pretty much guaranted to score some wins in all of them and some nice poins too. And she spends less precious money.
She'll get that top 105 position.

But I want her to stop playing before november and have a long off season.
2011 and WTA is what matters most

A break here would be nice. Miki's progress this season has been awesome. Merely three-four months ago we were wondering if she would make qualies cut offs at slams, now we're wondering if she'll make the main draw cut offs - a huge leap.

mikireturns

Yes, but Miki will be the first to tell you that she thrives on having a lot of matches and little down-time.

A month off in December to enjoy her comeback with family at the holidays will be ideal. No one on this damned tour has earned it more. But she will indeed need to be in tip-top, out-of-her-mind shape for the launch in Australia in 2011.

She wants to reach that next level, so she will need to be sharper than the sharpest blade, going into next season.

But Miki knows this, guys. She actually, really does.

I did not want to say too much until she won the title, but I did indeed think she could take this title, and now, the points are not only "defended", they are pointless. She will have 108 points drop off between now and December 31, but every single thhing she does ispure bonus, now. Her 115 ranking is guaranteed, pretty much, for year's end, but she has five more events to play ... in form like this.

It's better than that, actually. She's defending only 96 points the rest of this year (Las Vegas, 38; Bayamon, 34; and Rock Hill, 24; her other tournaments late last year are not best-16 so they don't count).

She basically needs around 110 points (one more $75K tournament win!) to finish the year in the top #100. She needs only around 65 points to finish in the top 108, which would practically guarantee direct entry to AO MD. If she plays well, that's totally doable in just three of the upcoming ITF tournaments.

Great win!!! Earlier I said she likely would not reach her top 100 goal by the end of the season. I modify this opinion. Five wins in five days. Alot of tennis. Hopefully, the organizers in Vegas will let her play her first match on Wednesday so she can get a few crucial days off. I wouldn't even mind if she pulled out. She could rest and make up the points later.

Wow, what a way to kick-off a new thread:hearts: Congratulations to Mirjana on her 3rd ITF singles title, second of the year, and yes, the first one on hardcourts. I had to check a bit of info and just saw that prior to Jackson she won just one ITF event in her career, as a 15 y.o. back in the summer of '97 in her hometown of Makarska, when she won a 75k challenger as a JE without dropping a set. Now she dropped just one set and is a liiiiitle bit older, but it's still an achievement;)

As I predicted LLW was really no threat and looks like Miki controled the match for the most of it's duration. Good that she kept it in two, cause now eventhough she played 5 matches last week, I don't think she's too drained to play well in Vegas, at least give it 2 or 3 good matches. She's still on the entry list (as #6) so...

Anyway, it really has been a great, great week, and I hope it continues to be a great year cause there's some damage to be done in 2011:devil:

LUCIC SHOWS OFF POWER GAME

(this from Toby Smith of the Albuquerque Journal)

In out-of-this-world nice weather Sunday afternoon, Superwoman met Supermom in the singles final of the ColemanVision Tennis Championships.

Super power won out.

Using blistering pace off the ground and a consistent first serve, Croatia's Mirjana Lucic beat Lindsay Lee-Waters, mother of two, 6-1, 6-4, at Tanoan Country Club.

Lucic blasted Lee-Waters off the court in the first set in 45 minutes. With the crowd of 400 urging her on, Lee-Waters mounted a charge, but a third set was not to be.

Lucic's depth and strength in the first seemed to knock Lee-Waters off her game.

"I can't remember such total domination," said Dick Johnson, the La Cueva boys coach who has watched all 13 ColemanVision singles finals.

Even Lucic was surprised by the ease of the set and called it "amazing."

After a four-year layoff, Lucic began playing regularly again in 2008. She quickly found women players bigger and stronger than she remembered.

"Everybody was hitting so hard," she said.

And now she does too, as Lee-Waters learned.

"She played really, really well," said Lee-Waters, "especially serving."

Lee-Waters struggled much of Sunday with her service. "I had some chances at the end, but really, it was her day today." Lucic pocketed $11,400 for the win.

At age 28, Lucic feels she is coming into her own in her comeback. Last year, in her only previous trip to Albuquerque, she lost in the second round to eventual runner-up Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic.

"I wanted to come back this year and I wanted to win."

On Sunday, she did both. "It's a beautiful event. I loving being here."

Sep 27th, 2010, 04:52 PM

third on CC vs. el tabakh

I saw Heidi play in qualies at the U.S. Open. She hits the ball hard, and is quite attrative. She is probably one of the hottest players on tour. As far as the match tomorrow, there's every reason to believe Lucic will win. Unless she's worn out from playing so many matches Lucic will take this match.

Let's hope Mirjana can repeat her win against El Tabakh from earlier this summer.

Mirjana's quarter has opened up nicely. The only other top-200 players both lost in the first round: Cohen, the #7 seed, lost to Gullickson while Brengle lost to El Tabakh.

El Tabakh is a player who has given her much trouble before and, though Miki had her chances in both the first and the second sets, she put her foot on the gas at the end and closed well in the decider. I take this as yet another key sign of her confidence ... to not only pull out wins like this, but to close with some measure of authority in third sets.

I expect less trouble from Spears, but Miki will need to rest-up. Nice fight from Mikica.

Normally, I'd make her a solid favorite over Spears, but I have a feeling she may be a little spent from so many mathces. This is seven matches in nine days. That's alot of tennis. If she'd closed out Heidi in two sents, I'd say no problem next round, but with two and a half hours on court today, it's gonna be tough.

Yes. If Mirjana beats Spears, she'll have 32 points this week. When you add the points from her 15 other best tournaments this year, the total is 640 points. That would rank her around 108-110, which is just about the usual cut-off for the AO MD.

This two week stretch is good for Mirjana's stamina. Her stated goal is that she wants to win big titles "otherwise I wouldn't be playing" and, in my opinion, with her big game, if she keeps improving and beefs-up her net game and gets just a hair quicker next year, she could make a suprise run at a Slam. Playing tough matches and being mentally "on" over a two week period is good practice for that.

Spears is a veteran at age 29, but I considered Tabakh a more tricky opponent. Yes, Miki will likely make the AO MD if she wins this match, but she is also playing in 3-week stretches: w/ Kansas City left to complete this stretch, followed by a week's rest, then Troy, Grapevine, and Phoenix to finisn 2010. That's 4 more events left to play, though she ought not to need that many. She wants to make Top 100 for season's end.

It is very much in her sights now. Winning that 75k was so opportune.
