of PEPP so far the most impressive is Walters. She wasn't that impressive last season, but she already beat Ramos TWICE, and beat Seguso in 3 sets at SW R.

I think Issara also beat Marks at CSN Invite  (lost 1st set easily so didn't watch that match further  )

Without San Francisco's Jennifer-Lee Heinser the WCC NCAA automatic singles bid should be wide open this year.

St. Mary's - Alexandra Poorta or Catherine Isip.

Pepperdine - Arianna Colffer or maybe Ale Granillo if she's eligible this season.

LMU - April Bisharat or maybe Claudia Razzeto if she's eligible this season.

San Diego - Laura Claus, Stephanie Hoffpauir or Josymar Escalona.

Note:
Form posted and was POSITIVE Stephanie Hoffpauir transferred to UCI. It just goes to show when it's about UCI Form doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Did Juliette Coupez transfer from USD? She was the #! singles and still the best player out there (sans maybe Hoffpauir?)

With all do respect fantic, you put way to much emphasis on a player beating another player once that might not be the same caliber player. I don't know if you have ever played tennis, but it happens! Any given day an average player can beat a great player. It is not that unusual and it happens all the time!

Hey I was half joking when I wrote it

But still, very few players beat Juricova, who normally dispatches the opponents by a very

comfortable score ;)

SMC; Poorta and Soper graduates. HUGE loss, but Jullien, Isip, Gingras..nice youngsters.

The SM-SC score did get posted in time. If SM not top 44 they are done. It will be interesting to see if SC backslides this week.

Bill & Mary winning Colonial chewed up one at large spot as VCU was projected champ bit will be in anyway. Bubble likely 43ish as an early guess. Maybe 42 or 44.

hoping SMC to get an at large, their ranking is ridiculously low :help: They did beat 27th USD 5-2 or something

St Mary's will likely be the last team IN or the first team OUT

As I understand the final selection spots, the committee will take 'a look at' teams within 2 points in the ranking number. Such as they may jump Boston College over Kansas State based on the following:

Then have criteria that includes, but may not be limited to,

1) Head to head wins (SM did not play LB or CP for whatever reasons and one of those two will also be a final spot contender... so having those matches cancelled will hurt SM if one of those is the competition to get in)

2) Win vs in (meaning a win by SMC over # 26 USD... or Boston College has a couple good wins)... so they get a point

3) Ranking point differential more than 1 pt (it currently is... so they lose a point to the team being compared to them

Now what?

What will the bounce from beating Santa Clara in the consolation match be? What will it be a week from now when the computer spins twice on that last day? Will Santa Clara be 'passed' by other teams that win some tournament matches and thus SM's consolation win over Santa Clara washes out a bit?

SM right now is truely LB last year... ON THE BUBBLE; LB had a win over team that was IN (mid-30's Nebraska) but ended up being the first team not to get into the tournament last year.

Prior to Tues 4/26 rankings, # 45 is currently the bubble. That factors in that # 44 Bill & Mary won their league so it adds that last spot to get to an unusually deep # 45 with twelve conference winners within the at large range plus add backs.

However, to get to # 45 # 39 SD State must win MWest and that either # 40 LB or # 42 CP win the Big West. Should those not occur, the number moves forward again. Bill & Mary will move up in the rankings this week so that add back is solid.

I believe the only outstanding automatics with high ranked teams are Big12 (lots of options), Big 10 (options), Big East (ND; So Florida) MWest (SD State) or Big West (LB or CP). If others win the number moves the BUBBLE forward.

She is staying. I hope SMC gets that spot. Them playing Pepp in the semis of WCC really hurt them. It went down to the wire in the regular season match and their loss made them the 3rd seed. I'm just praying that they rise into a bid.

SMC is # 43 and looks to slide in with # 44 Kansas State the bubble that gets in.... unless the following scenario occurs

1) If SD State or Utah win instead of UNLV... since UNLV ranking should hold. That would move bubble to # 43.

2) K State still playing in Big 12 tourney this weekend could gain points. That could jump them over St Marys and leave SMC at # 44.

Question is does an LB or CP get in if they don't win tourney? Currently yes but if they compare results that could get interesting. No head to head but LB does have a common opponents are a push (LB beat Sac State, SMC beat UCSB). Not sure how they would look at that?

So SMC would prefer to see UNLV win the league and keep at large at # 44 for breathing space.

3) Same true with Big West... either Cal Poly or LB leaves the at large at # 44. Otherwise it drops to # 43 and everybody is holding their breath.

form
Apr 29th, 2011, 08:41 PM
Bubble (last spot) just dropped to #43

TCU just upset UNLV 4-2. Means either TCU or Utah will win MWC. Neither was in at large range in current rankings.

CSUN upset of Cal Poly leaves door open to drop last at large to as low as 42 if LB is not ultimately BW winner. Update: Irvine has also beat higher seeded UC Davis soundly. So the BW gets more interesting.

Elsewhere for the SMC bubble watch... a little help at # 44 K State got rolled by Texas. So they will pick up some decimal points for their win over lowly U Kansas yesterday but nothing more.

Saint Mary's of California ranked as a top 20 team. HIghest in program history. Travels to Arizona to play two tough matches.
Saturday and Sunday
http://www.smcgaels.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=101598&SPID=12531&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205390441&DB_OEM_ID=21400

Saint Mary's seems strong, but these two Arizona matches will test if they are really a top 25 team, or the ranking is a computer oddity. I think they need to get at least one WIN out of the Arizona road trip.

Commenting late, but Saint Mary's changed the order of #1 between the two Arizona matches. Jenny Jullien moved up to #1 over Catherine Isip. Seems like a justified change.

"The Toreros, currently ranked No. 48, will be tested early. Eight of their remaining 12 out of conference matches feature opponents currently ranked in the ITA's top-30, including three of the top five.

"Some of the matches we have this year I feel like we are matched up with pretty evenly. We are ranked No. 48 preseason, and most of the teams we play are ranked in the 20's," Stephens said. "Those are the ones I feel we match up with really well, and I think we can pull off some wins over teams that are ranked 15-20, like Michigan, Texas, Texas Tech, and Nebraska. I think some of those schools will be really fun to play."

Heard she has contacted a dozen schools about transferring for next year. Odd as a senior with just one year of varsity play left is she redshirts this year. Something going on up in Malibu?

Interestingly I also heard USD's new # 2 (Israeli girl) was actually headed to Pepperdine until some last minute issue at Pepp where they would not admit her... so she U turned to USD during December. Nice/lucky pick up by USD... talk about catching a break. Adding a solid last second # 2 will really make your team better.

On an aside, is it odd that an Israeli girl is going to a catholic school; after first accepting a very religious Church of Christ offer. Not something you see every day. Just a random thought.

Heard there was major drama the year before her junior season between her and the coach. There were talks of a lawsuit (I don't know the details. I heard the coach tried to kick her off, but her parents threatened action against the program). She injured her knee, I think, because I saw pics of her in a knee brace (looked like ACL).

Pepp has had some issues getting girls. My friend was headed towards there, but there was a chance she'd have to take one more homeschool class in the summer before she started school. Pepp had 2 girls kicked off the team for academic reasons, and they didn't want to chance anything so they voided her LOI.

STANFORD, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team has racked up its share of impressive accomplishments over the last few years.

Saturday's win at Stanford might just stand at the head of the class.

Ranked No. 47 in the country, the Gaels banded together to watch Catherine Leduc's three-set thriller clinch a historic 4-3 victory over the No. 7-ranked Cardinal at Taube Family Tennis Center.

It is the first ever victory over a top-10 team for Saint Mary's, which improved to 5-3 on the season. It is just the third home loss for Stanford (3-1) since 1999. The Cardinal owned a NCAA record 184-match home winning streak from 1999-2011.

"It is obviously a huge win for us after a slow start to the year," Saint Mary's coach Lisa Alipaz said. "I have enormous respect for (Stanford head coach) Lele Forood, Frankie (Brennan) and their whole team. She is a legend and they have a talented, classy team."

The Gaels got started with doubles. Elizabeth Searl and Catherine Isip got the party started with a 8-6 win over Kristie Ahn and Amelia Herring at No. 2. Shortly thereafter, SMC earned the point when No. 1 team Jenny Jullien and Danielle Flores beat Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay 8-5.

That advantage proved huge once singles began. Wins at No. 4 and 2 singles gave the advantage back to Stanford, with the Cardinal leading 2-1.

Jullien was there to even the score, and in the process, she continued the massive roll she has been on this spring. Ranked No. 24 in the country, Jullien earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 10 Krista Hardebeck at No. 1 to square the match at 2.

The win is Jullien's fifth over a ranked opponent this spring, and fourth over a top-30 competitor.

Stanford pulled back in front with a win at No. 6 singles, but that lead didn't last long.

The Gaels earned their third point of the day courtesy of sophomore Danielle Flores. Picking up perhaps her biggest victory of the season to date, Flores battled for a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 win over No. 33-ranked Ellen Tsay.

"We got great performances from Jenny and Dani in both singles and doubles," Alipaz said. "Their win at No. 1 doubles really set the tone for the day and gave us belief."
That left just No. 5 singles to decide the match, and pitted SMC's Leduc against Stanford's Natalie Dillon.

Dillon took the first set 6-4, but Leduc fought back to win the second set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. That fight carried over into the third, and with the support of her Gaels teammates, Leduc won the set 6-3 to finish off a tremendous day for the Gaels.

"Catherine's come from behind victory was so fun to watch," Alipaz said. "After a slow start, she clawed her way back into it and really executed her game plan superbly in the final set."

The win was Saint Mary's fourth in a row, and should provide huge momentum as the Gaels prepare to host No. 3 UCLA on Feb. 23. That match is set to begin at noon.

UCLA, beware? :oh:

So, Nebraska plays at USD.

USD's scheduling is SO tough, so they need a quality win desperately. Nebraska is definitely a winnable target

To 'ensure' the win, I'll root for them since coach Stephens has always been nice to me  and well, they ARE a So. Cal team

Remember, my 'rooting power' is considerable in that it 'helped' Mal to beat Tamira and Gulbis to beat Janko

Although I like Mary  the Torreros need the win more. ;)

I think not. But, it would help the Pac-12 teams to schedule if between the Big West and the West Coast Conference there were more ranked teams. And like, Saint Mary's the WWC and Big West might pull off an upset, and the individual players get a chance for raising their ranking. And I just like for teams based in California to win. I've got a good feeling for the coaches from UCI and St. Mary's.

BYU def. LMU 4-0

- LMU didn't show up for this road match. :o

- The only change in the seeding is that BYU is now the 6th seed and LMU the 7th seed. They will still play each other in the first round of the WCC tournament.

PEPP recruited pretty well too, adding Chiang and Maddox(next year), both are big hitters.

Wonder how USD will cope with the graduation of senior class including Claus.

With BYU also strengthening their roster...next season could be good
