Sep 24th, 2010, 06:39 AM
Thats a pretty good draw for her. Kimiko is playing Seoul this week so that shouldn't be too difficult. The crowd probably likes Maria enough for home court advantage to not kick in. Schiavone's unpredictable (for all we know she'll lose to BYE) but can't say I'm too worried about that one. And JJ has been playing like crap.
can't ask for a better draw - granny Kimiko, folowed by Maria's punching bag Dani and Schiavonne LOL. Hopefully that stinker against Pushmaster will light the fire under Maria's ass for once and she steamrolls this draw.

Schiavone is a loose cannon and played some superb tennis at the US Open, but let's take this one match at a time. Interestingly, Date-Krumm and Sharapova have never played each other before.

Well there's a difference between playing when you're 'feeling unwell' and 'coughing and sneezing the entire time'. The first one is probably the toughest, and I don't think you can play if you feel unwell, as in stomach ache etc.
Playing with a nasty cough etc is definitely manageable, as you said Maria did it in Doha '08.

Hey,
I don't think Maria is planning to play YEC even if she qualifies for this event I know it sounds dumb but she can't play Moscou then play YEC. She won't be at her very best I just hope she wins a lot of points to be in top 10 at the end of the year and possibly avoid the best players too early at slams.
Yeah she would play YEC believe me;)
In 2007 she played Moscow and YEC and also in 2005.

Exactly. Sorry, but it's true.
Of coure, we all know that she's capable of playing much better than that, but she just hasn't stepped her game up or crumbled under pressure when it counted (RG 3-0, 40; Wimby SP, Cincy MP). If she had, she would have qualified for the YEC.
Bali is beautiful and Masha should play there, imo.:cheer:
I know its true but its  to see all those missed opportunities especially Cincy MP :sobbing:
I don't see why Maria should not play Bali, unless she doesn't want to.

2008: *cough*
2009-2010....
Well, she had a final and a semi in 2007, plus a good YEC.
Can't really defend 2009-2010 though.

Yep that's what I meant YEC is right after Moscow. Hopefully she will do great in Tokyo and Beijing(she will probably be qualified with 2 wins) and then will withdraw from Moscow, anyway wait and see.

Wrong.
There is no need "half of the top 10 to die" in order Maria to qualify for Doha.
On the contrary we wish them good health.

exactly...Maria doesn't need to win both Asian Premier events to qualify for Doha - winning one and reaching the semis of another would be sufficient. And she also has Moscow to gather some points if something goes wrong too.

I'm always wrong, just like I was wrong about Maria sucking at her pre-USO practice and Maria not using a Prince racket.
I would love for her to qualify for Doha, but we have to be realistic -- currently Maria is a top 20 player.

I believe players that reach the SFs of Tokyo get a 1st round bye in Beijing but even so Maria ran out of gas last year after her match with Viktoria.

You guys do realise that she's about 1100 points behind #8 right? If Maria eventually qualifies it'll not only have to do with her having good results, its because mainly Vika and Dementieva sucked.

it doesn't matter who "sucks" and whatnot - Wozniacki is World Nr.2 with one Premier title and has a chance to become Nr.1. The majority of the tour sucks big time now, and the one who sucks less has is always within a good shot...

A lil bit like in 2007 and she reached the final. I know situations are really differents right now but Maria seems really confident when she plays YEC and the surface suits her game really well so.

Yes it does matter. I strongly think Maria won't be able to qualify by just having good results. She'll need help from the closer contenders atm, they need to lose early.

But if she wins Tokyo and Beijing it's a lock, a win in Tokyo would mean Schiavone does not make QF.

A win in Tokyo and Beijing would give her a 1900 point boost so she should enter top 8 and she should also stay there, guaranteeing her spot in Doha normally. But I don't think that will happen, Azarenka and Dementieva are way closer to qualifying and they just need solid results from now on, whereas Maria needs pretty much spectacular results. Plus now that we know she's also sick her chances of doing well here just went down a bit I think.

For those of you who missed this analysis in the Moscow thread, I inserted it here so you can better evaluate what Pova can do this Fall...
Pova's chances for getting into the YEC are not brilliant. To do it,
she would have to overtake Fran who is currently #8 and hope that
ARad and Elena (and others) don't do it better.
Here's how the Ranking Points lay out from the end of the USO on 9/13/2010.
The stats show the points #7 to #10 need to defend from the 2009 tournaments
along with Pova's. The "Fall Start" column shows the net points each player
has to build on from the begining of the 2010 Fall Tournaments with all points taken out from 2009 Fall Tournaments. Note, this is a rather optimistic analysis
because it does not consider the 16 Best Results that count towards Rankings...
R64 R32 R16 QF SF F W
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Tokyo 1 70 125 225 395 620 900
Beijing 5 80 140 250 450 700 1000
Moscow 1 60 120 200 320 470
YEC chances in view of all of this are dim at the very best. Pova will need
to win her three Fall Tournaments just to have an opening and, even then, hope
for someone, or more, to drop out of the YEC.
I am sure that Pova can add and subtract. Therefore, I believe she is just
trying to earn points for better positioning for 2011. But, of course, nothing
will happen if you don't try...

How many points each player has to defend till the end of the season has nothing to do with the points necessary to qualify for Doha.
You should use the Race to the WTA Championships, not the Rankings.
