Serena Williams leaves Pan Pacific field

TOKYO -- Tournament organizers say top-ranked Serena Williams has pulled out of this month's Pan Pacific Open as she continues her recovery from surgery on her right foot.

Williams, who cut her foot on broken glass at a restaurant after winning Wimbledon this year, returned to practice earlier this month.

Williams headed a strong field for the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 event. Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic have entered the tournament. Maria Sharapova returns to defend her title.

After missing this year's U.S. Open, Williams told The Associated Press on Sept. 13 that she has yet to decide when she'll return to competition but plans to play for the United States in the Fed Cup final against Italy in November.

That's not surprising for me. I mean she have been at some fashion shows in London. That's not the preparation for a tournament. I think maybe she will play Doha and the Fed Cup final...

Is there any chance of her staying number one if she wins the YECs? Obviously she doesn't give a hoot about being #1 but I still do.

I'm a big Clijsters fan (mostly cuz i'm belgian) but I read the other player forums 2 and saw this blog (http://www.tennisnow.com/Blogs/Tennis-and-stuff-/September-2010/Serena-Williams--tour-absence-could-equal-huge-ran.aspx) that does a good job breaking down the top 5 players and what they have left on their schedules and how many pts they have to defend. really wozniacki or vera z probably have the best chance to end up #1 which seems ridikulous since neither won a slam this year!

So Kim won't be there either? One of these other ladies really needs to hoard all the points.
