I think you're right. Let's support her, after all those years of great tennis with charm and humor, of course together with Natasja. Are there parents on this forum who can help her with her 17 months old kids, screaming out loud?

Gigi was my first ever favourite player and was the one that really got me hooked on following the Tour!!

Loved her on court, her tennis and humour...didn't always like her off court, used to find her a bit intimidating in person :help:

I still find it interesting to read about her, but there are many things that annoy me about her now, she always has to brag excessively (yep about her past achievements but even about the IQ of the sperm donor used) and everything with her seems like a business opportunity....even her children. Getting them involved in sport at such a young age...yes I know she's a retired pro-sports woman...but please, these are babies and they should be having fun, learning and playing....not be moulded into wannabe pro-athletes at this age.

Another thing I find annoying...she says how long she wanted to have children, how many years she went through IVF treatment....so why put them in daycare at 17 months old? If they are screaming and upset at daycare, it shows they are not ready for it...maybe Gigi should take some time out to have 'fun' and enjoy being with her children whilst they are still young...forget the pro-sport obsession, forget the buisness plan (she has enough money) forget the daycare and just enjoy being the children that she had wanted for so long :)

btw - Sorry if I sound impatient with her, but I don't think it's right to be so intense about sport which such young babies :o

I always thought Fernandez was easygoing and playful but this article doesn't suggest that at all. But then again I'm not a woman in my mid-40's who desperately wants a kid. haha Geeddes sounds like the balance that Gigi needs in her life. Best of luck to their family.

It seems that the drop off problems are solved:

http://twitter.com/gigifernandez/status/27032134618

http://twitter.com/gigifernandez/status/27437826527

Finally some good news. Pity that she does not say why there are no drop off dramas any more. It would be interesting to know if she changed something to improve the situation or if the kids just got used to it now as time went by, that they just needed their time to adapt. Hopefully they really adapted in a healthy way now, and not simply resigned because their protests didn't have any effect.

It almost looks like as if Gigi gave up on her blog, no new posts since more than a month now. :awww:

http://babygoespro.wordpress.com/

I'm not a huge fan of her, but the blog always was an interesting read (although it obviously also is meant to be promotion for her company, of course ;) ).

And I find it strange that there are almost no comments from readers. It's a great opportunity to get in touch with a tennis legend, but people don't seem to be interested.

Does she still collect pigs?

If so, then maybe there is a sensational opportunity to give her collection an exceptional boost. ;)

There was an offer on Ebay.de a week ago. The auction didn't get any bids, so I guess that the piggies are still available for sale and they will be listed again. A whole collection of 3000 different pieces () including proper furnishings for storage:

I'm not sure if it is an "effective" strategy to get 1000 followers to offer a free tennis lesson to follower #1000. People might wait for others so that they have a chance to get the gift *LOL*.

TENNIS / EVERT CUP : Graf Sweeps Past Gigi Fernandez
February 23, 1994 |JERRY CROWE | TIMES STAFF WRITER

INDIAN WELLS — Gigi Fernandez, celebrating her 30th birthday, blew out the candles on a birthday cake at a party Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, top-ranked Steffi Graf blew out Fernandez, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the Evert Cup at Hyatt Grand Champions, completing her day's work on the stadium court in only 47 minutes.

"I hired a bodyguard to club her in the knee, but he didn't show up," Fernandez said at a postmatch news conference, where she wore a red T-shirt with the inscription: "Me? 30? I Demand a Recount."

Whether it was her advancing age or, more likely, Graf's brilliant play, Fernandez showed her frustration during the match more than once.

During a changeover after winning the seventh game of the second set, Fernandez remained in her seat and read a newspaper, to Graf's amusement, while Graf stood at the baseline, waiting to serve.

"She was reading the money section," Graf said, "so I was thinking, she's thinking about how she's going to use the prize money she's going to get for losing in the first round."

Confirmed Fernandez: "I was reading stock quotes."

Why?

"Just to get my mind off it, try to relax a little bit," said Fernandez, who earned $2,650. "I should have done it earlier. When you're down, 6-1, 5-2, you have to try to do something different."

Graf, who has lost only twice in her last 63 matches and has yet to drop a set in 13 matches this year, moved into today's second round against Tracy Austin, who 11 years ago defeated Graf in the German's first professional match, 6-4, 6-0, at Filderstadt, Germany.

Austin said Monday she had fond memories of the then 13-year-old Graf, saying she was impressed with Graf's ability and confidence.

"Is that so?" Graf said Tuesday, appearing to be suspicious. "She said something different afterward."

She wasn't gracious?

"She said something to the press that I wasn't liking at the time," Graf said. "She said there were hundreds of players like me in America."

Pausing, Graf smiled. "Probably not anymore."

I really doubt that sports has something to do with Gigi troubles to have children. Lots of women all around the world have difficulties to become pregnant (ovulation troubles, no eggs etc), nature will always be the one who decides and even though it may sound crual, that's life. Maybe Gigi would have had troubles without being a pro tennis player... I know lots of sports women who have had babies without any problem and sometimes very late (at 40 years old) so I doubt about that version. There is not always an explanation about infertility, you can see women who can't become pregnant at 25 years old (being healthy and young) and and others who have a baby easily at 40 years old.

I'm happy for her she finally had kids but the idea of freezing eggs at 20 years old being a pro sports woman is a bit exaggerated ! How do you explain then that Kim Clijsters, Steffi Graf or Lindsay Davenport have had babies soon after they retired ? Didn't they play as much as Gigi ? Maybe she simply played too long, this can be a better explanation if you really want to find one.

:)

I think that you are right.

I did a search for specialized literature on this topic, and the results suggest that the statement "female athleticism leads to female infertility" is a generalization that is not backed up by scientific evidence. However, some results suggest that the intensity and frequency of physical activity could be associated with a higher risk of female infertility. But the evidence isn't strong enough to safely say that female athleticism inevitably leads to infertility. As in many other diseases and dysfunctions, there are many possible causes and risk factors, and furthermore the clinical outcome highly depends on the individual person.

As a side note, there is a huge number of articles that can be found on female infertility in general (causes, risk factors, etc.), but not that many on the particular question of infertility in female professional athletes.

For those interested in the topic, here are two interesting articles which can be understood easily by everyone (without too many medical terms I mean :)):

Physical activity and fertility in women: the North-Trøndelag Health Study (Full article) (http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/content/24/12/3196.long)

Risk factors associated to female infertility (only the abstract) (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19149400)
