There are some tough qualies she could get. Vesnina, Cibulkova, Dushevina, Vinci..

Btw no doubles for Kiri here. Think that's a good choice.

I saw MK in the stands today cheering Andreev on :awww: It was absolutely freezing today and really cloudy and a light drizzle the entire day but even MK managed to look all glammed out in such horrible conditions (she wrapped her towel around her like a scarf to stay warm :awww: )

I sat on the exact opposite side of the court, but I could see her watching someone in front of her taking pictures of Igor and she was clearing leaning in to see how the pictures turned out :haha:

"Elena started by making a lot of mistakes but in the second set my serve didn't work so well - I hit a lot of double faults and became too passive," Kirilenko said. "I changed my racquet at the start of the third and began to feel the ball again and play more aggressively."

Kirilenko said both players had trouble with the strong winds that swirled through the stadium court, and she switched rackets after losing her feel for the ball in the second set.

"I started to make a lot of double faults, and my serve didn't work at all," she said. "In the third set, my serve started to feel better."

Good she got the win in the end. :) Bacsinszky next.. good chance to go far if Maria plays well. Good luck.

I went to this, MK played OK - the conditions were very, very tough. It was really cloudy and cold even early in the morning, and the wind was unbelievable - things blowing all over the place, big gusts etc, so Maria had to play really safe and contained tennis.

In the first, Elena didn't really seem to adjust for the wind and hit a lot of errors while trying to dictate and Maria was SO consistent, the only game she played as aggressor-Kiri '10 was to break at 3-1, once she got the break she settled back down and just kept the ball in play.

In the second, Elena was still the aggressor but Maria just started to miss a bit, you always got the feeling Elena was eventually going to get the break, surprised she got it so late. I went to get a quick lunch after the second and came back to 5-1 already so I can't comment on the third

feel so sorry for Maria... she didnīt deserve it at all...she was great all the tournament and in the first set and looked without injury problems.... the second one started and something was hurting her.... I think Maria would have beat Petrova if she was fit because Petrova didnīt played so well and made a lot of unforced errors...

at one moment Maria was sitting on the chair and it seemed she was crying into the towel... I felt sorry for her... I think she felt she could go to the final and she could beat Petrova today if she was fit but injury came... Maria was very sad but didnīt want to retire and tried to fight until the end of the match... fair play to her!!!

hope she will be fit for US Open but if she loses her points there never mind because she gained more points at New Haven than at USO.... good luck in New York!! weīre proud of you!!!

Well that's about as bad as the last hour of a SF the week before a slam can go. When I left at the start of the second set everything was looking rosy. :(

Is it a back or a shoulder injury? Hope she didn't make it worse by carrying on until the end...

Oh no, i was following 1st set in work on livescore and was so happy when I saw 6-2. Got home to see she lost and had injury :( Seems like a back injury, hope its not serious. She really should have stopped playing. So soon to USO, its crazy to continue :(

Rovegun
Aug 27th, 2010, 11:45 PM
it is a back injury... Maria said she felt it in the first set but won because Petrova has made a lot of mistakes which is right... no it wasnīt crazy to continue because Maria has gained more points at New Haven than sheīs defending at US Open.... and if she felt she can finish the match so she tried it.... maybe she would have retired but she won the first set and maybe therefore wanted to try to win it...

Kirilenko broke Petrova twice in the first set but said she felt a pain in her back after lunging for a ball. She took a medical timeout in the second set and had a hard time moving.

Kirilenko, who said she had no back pain coming into the tournament, said the pain back started bothering her late in the first set.

“I don’t know what the pain was from, but I started to feel it in the first set,” Kirilenko said. “It was just a little bit of pain at first and then it went more and more and more. In the second set, when she was serving, I just pulled from the serve and made a very fast movement and that’s when I started to feel it more. Then I couldn’t even bend at all.

“It felt better when I had the physio (trainer) come out but it didn’t go away. I still decided to continue because there is no reason to stop, you know just because you have pain. You have to try.”

Kirilenko said she would have her back looked at before deciding her status for the U.S. Open.

Very good run for Maria. :)

Poor Maria with her back injury. Hopefully she's ok for the US Open.
