Pretty good performances from this 18yr old recently.
She beat Molik in the ITF in Vancouver last week.
Today, she beat Cohen-Aloro in the first round of qualifying in Montreal 63 62.
SHe's currently ranked #694.
Anyone know much about her?

After a pretty rough start to the year, Gabriela got a wild card into Charleston qualies. She won one round and is at a new career high of #482. She now qualified for the 25k Osprey where she'll face Caroline Garcia in the first round. Good luck and Happy Belated 19th Birthday!

Dabrowski has potential, it's more mental than anything else in my opinion.

Seen her play many times through the years, and she's always been a great athlete. Moves very well, solid game and competent moving forward as well. Only thing that held her back was her emotions, getting tight in pressure situations of a match. I think the fact that she didn't get a ton of international experience may have hindered her some in terms of getting that match play in and really learning to play through some of that, but she's shown improvement with confidence. I hope she will give the pro circuit a try for at least through 2012 to see where she's at. The American challengers early in the year are always tough especially trying to come through some of the big qualifying draws where you have a mix of good juniors and veteran pros battling it out there.

Nice job ;). I was a bit worried when her 50k final points came off, but then she goes and makes the semis at a 75k. Seems like a weirdly awesome last tournament each year is becoming a tradition. Should reach a new career high too. Nice to see her still plugging away. She's also ranked 138 in doubles currently. Good luck vs. Sanchez; if she wins she'll break the top 300.

She caught my attention as I am mainly a greatgreat doubles fan (lol, I sometimes watch singles just when there are no more doubles played) and I watched Dabrowski/Fitchman that day ... and became an instant fan. I also saw her in Brussels some weeks later.

Interesting article down below. Dabrowski's had trouble with funding for quite a while I think, but more interesting is the actual numbers the author puts to funding. I wish he had actually laid out the complete funding structure, but that's probably asking too much. Is it year end ranking, or does a player just have to have reached the milestone recently? For full funding at age 21, top 40 is pretty difficult. The highest ranked 1992 girl currently is Paula Ormachea, who is in the sixties. I realize that Watson was also higher before she was sick. This seems like a slightly lofty goal, especially since Tennis Canada acknowledges in the article that players are breaking through later and later. To get some ongoing support she needs to be top 132, where Canada only has two players total. I seem to recall a few years ago Tennis Canada restructured funding so that all top 100 players had full time coaching and the players in the top 250 shared a coach. Didn't Dubois opt to remain with her own coach? Canada has put together a really good junior system, it'd be nice to see that continue a bit more into pros. There's quite a funding gap after juniors until they are high enough ranked in pros. Top junior Zhao is only about 550. Anyway, you'd think that Tennis Canada could support their top 5 players with part time coaching at least. We really only have Wozniak, Dubois, Fichman, Dabrowski and El Tabakh and they are all decently ranked. At least Gaby's making more money with her doubles now :)

Rogers Cup: Pro tennis different ball game for Gabriela Dabrowski (http://www.thestar.com/sports/tennis/2013/08/03/rogers_cup_pro_tennis_different_ball_game_for_gabr iela_dabrowski.html)
Once the world No. 5 in junior tennis, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski struggling to make the jump to the pro game.

Gabriela Dabrowski had a dazzling trip through the ranks of junior tennis from the moment she first picked up a racket as a 7-year-old in Ottawa.

She was playing provincial tournaments by 8, made the final in the under-14 provincials at just 10 and won the under-14 nationals at 13.

On the international scene, at 14, she made history by becoming the first Canadian to win Les Petits As in France, a top under-14 tournament. At 17, she won the prestigious junior Orange Bowl in Miami.

Her hard work, focus and never-give-up attitude took her through everything junior tennis threw at her. But, it hasn’t been enough to provide anything approaching similar success as a pro player.

She was the No. 5 junior player in the world but now, at 21, going into the qualifying round at the Rogers Cup on Saturday she was No. 214.

“I never came on court and gave up, I always tried fighting,” Dabrowski said of her style as a junior. “In the pros fighting is important but it’s not enough. You need to develop weapons and that’s the part that I struggled with.”

On Saturday, though, she had no trouble besting 73rd-ranked Karolina Pliskova, 6-4, 6-2 at the Rexall Centre.

The six-foot-one Pliskova was seemingly all arms and legs to Dabrowski’s more muscular five-foot-nine frame, leading a spectator to shout, “Come on Gaby, she just looks 10-feet fall.”

Dabrowski lunged for balls and won rallies with some crowd-pleasing net-skimming shots, while Pliskova put several key shots straight into the net.

Dabrowski plays another qualifying match Sunday and if she wins she’ll get a spot in the main draw of the Rogers Cup along with the all the tournament favourites.

The transition from the junior game to the more physical and offensive senior game isn’t an easy one and most players don’t just step into the pros and make things happen right away, said Sylvain Bruneau, Canada’s head national women’s coach.

Canada’s top-ranked female player, 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard, who won junior Wimbledon last year and beat 12th-seed Ana Ivanovic as a pro at Wimbledon this year, is the exception rather than the rule.

“(Dabrowski) has had some difficult times but I think she is finding her way and the best is yet to come for her,” Bruneau said

“We’ll see that more and more often as the game becomes more physical and players are older. She’s still young, she’s only 21, and that era when players were 15 and 16 and winning at the highest level on the women’s tour is not happening anymore.

“I’m very hopeful that she’ll have a nice breakthrough but it’s not one of those, where at 19, she’s inside the top 100.”

But pro rankings are a bit of a chicken and egg story. Because Dabrowski isn’t ranked higher she doesn’t get Tennis Canada funding for an ongoing coach that would help her build on the strengths of her game and overcome its weaknesses.

“Not having someone there for that transition, that was the hardest part,” she said of her move to the pros.

Dabrowski and her parents haven’t been shy in their criticisms that Tennis Canada didn’t give her the same opportunities to work with world-class coaches they feel others received coming out of their junior careers.

“We’re both extremely proud of what Gaby has been able to accomplish because, largely, she’s had to do it on her own,” her mother Wanda said.

“We’ve remortgaged our house to help fund her remaining on the tour.”

Knowing the sacrifices that her parents have made for her tennis dreams hasn’t made things any easier.

“It was always in the back of mind,” Dabrowski said. “Oh my God, my parents are putting so much into this, I have to perform and I’d play way worse when I thought of stuff like that.”

Dabrowski’s father, Yurek, is still her coach, but they can’t afford to have him travel with her. When she’s home in Ottawa they train at the park up the street and, when they can find the time and money, they do some training in Florida.

Tennis Canada has provided Dabrowski with sporadic access to coach Simon Larose. He’s here with her at the Rogers Cup and she said that working with him has really improved her physical and mental game.

Tennis Canada support, which primarily covers coaching, varies according to a player’s ranking and years on the tour, said Hatem McDadi, vice-president of tennis development.

Bouchard, in her first year as a pro, needed to be ranked in the top 150 to get some support and top 68 to get the gold standard of a coach that travels with her. Ranked 58th she has that.

Dabrowski, in her third year on the tour, needs to be top 132 to get some ongoing coaching support and top 40 to get the same level of support Bouchard has.

Over the last six months, Dabrowski has focused more on doubles and has been finding good success there.

“I like doubles better and I’m better at it. My ranking is much higher in doubles.”

She’s ranked 88th and is expected to be playing in the Rogers Cup with Toronto’s Sharon Fichman, who is playing in the main draw of the singles tournament.

Well the reason for the current funding system is clear. A couple years ago they had Milos and Rebecca, they had a bunch of money set aside for player development for transitional pros. They wanted to give the biggest portion of the money to fund Milos and Rebecca, but in Canada we need rules and transparency to ensure that money is distributed in a 'fair' process that's understood by all. Thus you can't as Tennis Canada say 'We're giving money to Milos and Rebecca because we think they're going to be great'. You have to create a set of rules that only Milos and Rebecca will qualify for.

You often see this in Government grant programs from Ministries of Industry, Economic Development etc. If the Government of Ontario creates a jobs program for to 'create jobs producing mass transit vehicles in northern Ontario' for example, everyone knows taxpayers are paying Bombardier to hire people to produce Toronto's subway cars in Thunder Bay. It's not like Siemens or a Japanese company is going to invest billions to open a plant in the north from scratch just to get in on that jobs program.

I'm sure if the money sits unused for a few years they will revamp it again. This is the nature of organizations with lots of stakeholders, that operate as a sort of public trust.

Gabby's into the quarters at 50K Captiva Island, beating (4) Maria Sanchez on the way. She plays (8) Pegula in the quarters. Hopefully she keeps going; she's defending SF points from 75K Phoenix this week.

She's also the top seed with Will in double this week.

Continues on grinding a win over Cohen 1-6 7-6(2) 6-4 in a match that I believe took over three hours, somebody said. Meanwhile Minella just took the first set over Kiick 6-0 in 18 minutes. That'll be tough tomorrow. Very good week though, she's into both the doubles and singles finals. Her traditional great year-end tournament lol

Into the final at 25k Vero Beach to start the year. Will play (3) Laura Siegemund (GER). Strangely not playing doubles.

I hope she has some good grass events this year. I think her game is ideally suited to grass.

Some of the her scheduling this year hasn't made much sense. But what do I know? Glad she won her 1st round match in doubles too!

She's only playing doubles at Nottingham. Is she only focusing on doubles? Seems like a missed opportunity...or am I missing something?

I think she was still in doubles at RG; the entry list at Nottingham says auto withdrawal.

Gab won her qualie R1 in Birmingham against Melanie Oudin 6-1 6-2  Oudin is going nowhere

She will probably play against Victoria Duval in the last Q round
