Summary:

Called the "third annual" event in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bertha (the paper also calls her "Bertie") Townsend repels the New York invasion by downing the New Yorker Robinson in an exciting contest. After barely winning the second set at 6-5 a partisan crowd cheers her on to victory over a tiring opponent.

Sources indicate this was the first USTA santioned national women's title. The USTA later retroactively recognized the 1887 event.

There was also a doubles event played in 1888, but the USTA must not have made that official until 1889, for that year is listed as the first.

Unique features that are odd to our "modern" eyes are the 6-5 set scores and byes after the first round. Standard scoring of winning by 2 games and byes in round 1 only were still a couple of years away.

Rollo, weren't you going to have tournament results posted in the "Tournament Results" page? I see Ugarte is up to two years now, and here you are. Understand the interest, I just don't like to see nothing but tournament result stats supplanting conversation about the players, which was my understanding of what the Blast was for. I don't mean to complain, it's your call obviously. Thanks for understanding.

Hi Jeff:wavey:

I thought all of them had been moved. This must have fallen through the cracks.:o

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll move it after I add Mark's results. I was excited to see Mark has full results for Edgbaston.

July 16-19, Leamington, Warwickshire, England (Grass)

FI: Alice Pickering d. Mrs Christie 4-6, 6-1, 6-2*

* This event was handicap only this year.
--

From the "Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1889): "Nearly two months of the present lawn tennis season had passed away before it was announced for certain that the tournament at Leamington would not fall through, as had been generally believed. It would indeed have been a pity to have allowed an old-established fixture like this to be abandoned, more especially as fair entries had always been obtained, and the challenge cup had been only in the possession of the present holder, Mr James Dwight, for one year.

" Luckily, the Town Improvement Association took the tournament in hand, and being backed up by a very strong committee, assisted by Mr Blaker and Mr Downing as honorary secretaries, everything proceeded well for a successful meeting. A programme of three level event and four handicaps was arranged, and these all received a capital entry, not only in numbers, but also in quality..."

From the "Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1889): "The sixth annual tournament of the Saxmundham Lawn Tennis Club was held in the beautiful gruonds of Hurts Hall Park, kindly lent by Colonel W.B. Long. The courts were in capital order, and the weather on the first two days was all that could be desired, but the final ties on Thursday were greatly affected by the rain."

This tournament would become the Suffolk Championships from circa 1900.
