HATE the draw, Floris and Oprandi draws impossible players (well, at least Anna has no chances, Romina may win a set), MEC and Alberta against each other (at least 1 will finally win a match!!!)....
I would love Flavia to defend the title, but I think it will be either Pironkova or Rezai who takes it

Rezai is the new Tournament whore :o She played Auckland, Sydney, AO, Paris (I), Dubai, IW, Miami, Marbella, Barcelona, Fed Cup, Rome, Madrid, RG, Birmingham, Eastbourne, Wimbly, Bastad and now Palermo :o And it does not seem like she's going to stop this, I read that she entered Québec City right after the US Open :tape::help:

Seriously another Scheduling Advisor is required.

I'm so sick of these useless clay Internationals between Wimbledon and the US Open series, they just don't belong in this time of the season.

Anyway, I hope Julia wins! :hearts:

THANK YOU!

ffs, SO annoying.

These clay hags can rack up the titles, whereas someone like Tanasugarn can't catch a break! There should be some GRASS MMs in the UK after Wimbledon :inlove:

Well I think acutally the Top players like Serena don't mind that break after Wimbledon. But yeah it's way too long and they should play on hardcourts :o

I would do something like this:
Wimbly (GS, Grass)
Nottingham (International, Grass)
Portoroz (International, Hard), Stockholm (International, Hard)
Stanford (Premier, Hard), Istanbul (International, Hard)
San Diego (Premier, Hard)

Nah probably not, but I can't see Rezai sustaining her game for two tournament wins in a row, and I can't see Pironkova or Kanepi winning either.

Caravane continues to hog like crazy. She's acting like a journeywoman, playing herself into the ground merely to take short term advantages out of being in (fairly) good form. Still, Bastad did turn out well for her, so maybe she (or Mouratoglou's team) knows what she's doing.

This draw is somewhat weaker than Prague's. Kanepi went out early last week, but I still feel that she is due some rest before the US Open series (then again, given that entry lists for I believe all of these events save for Canada were out before Kanepi's ranking was bumped up due to her Wimbledon run, she won't have direct entry to most of them).

Görges won an upper tier challenger in style last week, so hopefully she'll be in good form here as well. I suppose a lot of people are curious as to how Pironkova will do here.

FTW - counterintuitive pick: Pironkova.

I have just had a look at the 5 day weather forcast for Palermo. The forcast is for one day of brutally hot sunshine followed by more of the same and so on. We are talking about tempertures ranging between 35 and 40 degrees. Of course on court it will feel even hotter.

Rezai is on current form easily the best player on clay here. But I think expecting her to win back to back events in conditions like this is asking an awful lot of her. Having won last week in Bastad it would be understandable if she was a bit less hungry to win this week than some other players in the draw. And in these conditions whoever wins here is going to have to be very determined if nothing else.

I also think the those players who are rested having either not played last week or having lost early will have a very substantial advantage this week over those who went deep into last week's events. Kanepi, Oprandi and Errani particularly should all be rearing to go.

Having said all that I do still like the defending champion Flavia Pennetta's chances, even though she did play a lot of matches last week, albeit most of them very quick matches, partly because she loves playing these smallish local events but especially because she has a great draw. The bottom half is very stacked compared to a very light top half. Quite simply I can't see Flavia losing before the final here and with the ease in which I expect her to get to the final she will be the fresher player once she is there, while those in the bottom half will all have had pretty tough draws and had to undergo some tough battles under the sun. It's worth noting also that Flavia isn't playing doubles this week. That sends out a strong message to me that she wants to win the singles title here again.

A few words about Pironkova. It was great seeing her do so well at Wimbledon and she definately showed she is capable of playing outstanding tennis. But I don't think we can expect her to be playing at the level regularly at this point at all. For one thing this she will have to readjust to clay and for another it is awfully tough for players when they have a big surprising breakthough to maintain that form in the events immediately following. Rarely do they succeed. What normally happens is a few early losses occur and all the shortsighted posters start up with their usual "fluke" rants. And then a few weeks or months following, once the initial attention has dissipated, we start to see further good results. I think the future looks good for Tsveti but despite a helpful draw, I would still be surprised to see her get past the quarters here.

At Palermo, much like at ATP Umag IIRC, they only begin play at 16:00 PM, when it's a wee bit fresher, and then play on into the evening.

I forgot about that. Thanks. That's very good point. In these conditions night matches make a lot of sense.
