As for teenagers, ATP has none in the top 100 and is doing just fine.

Is that really such a bad thing?

After what went down with Vaidisova I don't want another case of a teen star who winds up retiring at 21. I have my complaints about how the WTA Tour do things but I think the Age Elgibility Rule might be the best thing they've done within the past decade.

Congrats Caro! :D

Not a bad thing, but I still feel like the Tour has changed forever and there is no way back. We may argue or not, but the excitement (regardless of what the future brought them) that teenagers like Seles, Capriati, Lucic or Vaidisova brought to the game was something unreal. Surely this is for best, but still I feel that something "typically WTA" is lost

I think the Age Elgibility Rule might be the best thing they've done within the past decade.

Believe it or not, that rule is more than 15 years old; Hingis had like a special exempt at the end of 1994 in order not to fall under this rule. Time do flies

The womens tour needs a new bulk of really young talented players, all court players, period. :help:

Yeah, I was surprised by this but I read it in the Sports Illustrated article from 1994 about the supposed death of tennis. Apparently at that time if you were under 18 you could only play 8 tournaments in one year. Which is ridiculous and very constraining. That's the Slams and only 4 other events! I'm not sure how many events the under-18s can play in today's world, but it's more than 8.

The lack of teenagers at the tops of men's and women's tennis speaks to the changing nature of the sport, and sport in general. It's become too physical for young girls. Physical maturity is required. It's not just in tennis. Look at the figure skating champions over the last 4 years including the last two Olympics: they're not 14 or 15-year old jumping beans anymore. Age is a good thing.

Well, the article is definitely wrong then. Capriati played the year she was 14 a total of 12 tournaments + Fed Cup. The year she was 15, she played 14 tournaments + Fed Cup. Basically, anybody could play anywhere before AER

Capriati was born in '76, so she was 14 in 1990.. The rule was implemented in 1994. I believe the article he's referring to was about the birth of the AER, in 1994, saying that restricting teenagers play would be "the death of tennis."

The rule: http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Archive/AboutTheTour/aer.pdf

I didn't realize you could play more as you got older . I thought it was just one general rule for everyone under 18.. I also didn't know no one under 14 could play at all

Off the top of my head:
Kournikova made a Wimbly SF at 16 and top ten at 17-18(?).
Serena and Venus were top players in their teens.
Seles and Hingis were multiple slam champions.

Even recently (2004):
Sharapova won Wimbledon at 17.
Golovin made top 18 at age 17 and the youngest player to make a Tier II SF since Serena at least six years earlier.

It was so exciting to see young players emerge from nowhere and challenge a high-quality field.
