:hehehe: Istanul, Cincinatti, Monteal is what she's playing.

Judging by who's entered in Istanbul, it looks like anything less than the title there would be an embarrassing loss. ;)

It is mor appropriate to ask if she will ever win another non slam title again? Venus will win a title though, she specialises in non slam events.

You can think she should win Istanbul, but she has played MM tournys before and lost against Zakopalova...

no, she don't care about them

Probably not. Maybe if she gets lucky with an easy draw.
Otherwise, I dont see it.

We all know the question that should be asked is 'Does Serena want another MM title?' and the answer to the thread will be resolved. IF she doesnt want, she wont bother.

Why the hell does she play stupid Istanbul ?

She has to play an international tournament in the WTA rulebook.

She could win all 3 or lose In the first round of all 3. She's still the overwhelming favorite at the US Open. That being said, I think she'll take 1 of the 3.

Depends on whether she can keep up her form from Wimbledon and how her opponents are playing. I don't know when she last won a title between Wimby and USO but it would be disappointing if she didn't win Istanbul.

We all know the question that should be asked is 'Does Serena want another MM title?' and the answer to the thread will be resolved. IF she doesnt want, she wont bother.

Another? Serena doesn't have any MM titles yet. ;)

Why is this question even asked? You know these type of tournaments don't matter to Serena!!!

Jul 7th, 2010, 03:45 PM
Here is the thing ... these girls come into these secondary tournaments (even major stars like Elena) all gungho about beating Serena. So they are fighting like crazy with their best tennis for a win and Serena is thinking, "there are bigger fish to fry. You can have this tournament." That's why she laughed at Safina last year.

Serena just won Wimbledon. That nice big Rosewater dish. I'm sure she does not really care about winning a trophy from these smaller events. If she goes out and wins then its cool, but she's not gonna be expending too much energy to win

First of all, she's never won an MM. And Montreal and Cincinnati are Premier 5 events.

If her opponents in Istanbul make her work too hard, then no. It's not in her interest -- or even the WTA/ITF's -- for her to be banged up and bandaged by August.

But a win in Cincy or Montreal would send shivers through the US Open locker room. She might go for one of them if she's looking to build aura and make her trip to #14 a bit easier.

My prediction:

Istan - QF Tank to some no name player who then becomes goddess for a week on TF

Cinci - Win

Montreal - Walkover/Retire at some early round QF or before

I would be fine if it went like that :)

A week off to rest for US open and inevitable 14th SLAM!!!

If she decides to play Istanbul, she might actually win it. But it's more likely she will withdraw

Re the others, she won't win. tough players in the draw and when serena does not really care a lot of them can beat her, eg JJ, ED,...

Oh honey, when your Serena Williams they're all MM events

Slams, YEC & Gold Medals are the real sh*t, the rest is probs just in Richards attic collecting dust. As if her Bangalore trophy will be anywhere near her Venus Rosewaters :rolls: You guys crack me up.

Hell no.
Smaller tournaments are irrelevant to Serena and cause injuries.

If Serena turns up in Istanbul, she may slip up and win the title with the weak field currently entered.

There is a greater chance she might win a doubles title though before the U.S. Open.

*DEATH* But do yo blame her? She makes way more money winning a slam that a MM tournament and gets way more press coverage=endorsement deals winning slams than a tournament like Bangalore.

Kim Clijsters would be the overwhelming favourite.

As many have stated, if she gives a toss then she'll win one.

I just think she finds it hard to find the motivation in these smaller events.

One of those times was in 2002 (when she was far more dominant generally than she is now) and the other was in 2008, when the Olympics meant there wasn't a proper USO warm-up season anyway. In a normal year, it's much harder to go into the FO or USO cold than at the AO or Wimbledon, where no player has had much match play in preparation so Serena isn't at much of a disadvantage in that regard.

if it's clay then I really can't see Serena playing to win. Either a withdrawal or a tank to whatever player makes her work harder than she wants to.

dsanders06

Serena won't be withdrawing from Istanbul. There's a pretty good reason she's going to such a little event coughappearancefeecough.

A tank is likely, however. I think she'll half-ass her way through a couple of matches before losing to someone like Dushevina in the QF's.

Who cares if it's clay or hard. If she does bother to go there it will be to shop at flea markets to get some wonderful jewelry. That's the only incentive I can see.

When was the last time she won a US Open series event??????

2001???? Really I donīt even remember the last time she won a title in the US outside the open, really...

Obviously she might win Istanbul, because the shit loads of money she will be getting from appearence fee, and then she wonīt win another event until the US Open

She has to play an international tournament in the WTA rulebook.
Is there really such a rule? I heard about the top players being limited to play something like only two international events, but I didn't know they HAD to play any of them.

The funny part is that for players like Serena and Maria, they probably end up making more money for playing the small events than the Premier events since the big events put most of the money up for prize money while the small events keep their purses small while putting up the real $$$ for appearance fees to one or two stars.

No, Serena the slam winning Williams does not care about these tournaments. i just have one hope that she makes the quarters in cicny because i will be there. if not i will see her when i go to the U.S. Open. Either way as long as she has 14 singles slams by mid September then it was a successful summer.

Top players don't have to play any Internationals if they don't want to. They can ONLY play a MAXIMUM of one Intl per every half-year.

The rules for top players are: must play all Premier Mandatories; 4 of the Premier 5s; atleast one other Premier every half-year.

at the end of the day serena only cares about the slams...and of course shes gonna save her best days for those.

I dont ever relate her performances or effort level at smaller events with the far great appeal that the Grand Slam events hold for her/

shes smart and while she may deem it nessesary to win a few smaller events im sure she wont lose any sleep losing a match in montreal if she has too.

it wouldnt affect her at all.

well lets face it, serena is just BETTER than her competetion...shes also bigger and bolder...i was never even a fan...and over the last 2-3 years shes gotten even more ruthless...it is crazy to see someone like her not even have to try she just DOES it.

All her rivals work years to make it and all she has to do is enter and boom...she has a 50/50 shot at winning it.

GAGAlady
Jul 8th, 2010, 04:09 PM
to be honest if these girls want to beat her and win any slams themselves they better get there asses into the gym and work out even more and get even bigger and stronger because right now it aint cutting it! everyone is getting crused by Serena and it looks BAD for the rest of the tour...

its pretty pathetic to see nobody challenging her consistently...

Charleston 2008 I think

Whats so funny about this? How about we take the current top 10 and count each of their last 6 tournies and see what they happen to be? I think it is hilarious and crazy that its a discussion about her winning a MM. IMO If i were here I could care less if I know on my resume my last 6 tournies have been 5 slams and a YEC title. #imjustsayin
