I guess it won't be televised? :( I thought WTT usually was.

And LOL at people saying Venus will bagel her. The competitive side of Martina will probably raise her play in this big match anyway, we'll see.

Man, the entire cost of this is going to be $92.80 if I do it. F*cking TicketMaster is such an evil cartel. They seriously gouge you so much.

TicketMaster charges an $8.55 convenience fee, an order processing fee of $4.50, and then they charge me $4.75 if I want to print out my own f*cking ticket. So lame. Such a monopoly. I agree they should earn something, but not $17.50.

But I'm going to go because I have never seen Venus and Martina playing live. I just hate that Martina has put down the racket for THREE years basically, and should get her ass beaten badly unless Venus takes it easy on her.

Pity you have to spend so much to see a hit and giggle match. Venus however is more focused on her book tour than tennis right now therefore you don't have to worry. Quite frankly she is just there out of obligation to BJK. Hope you have a good time anyway, enjoy!

Venus and Serena don't give a shit about their matches in WTT. They just play to support Billie Jean King. Remember when Venus when lost to Sloane Stephens last year, and Serena lost to Madison Keys? :o

It will be fun to see Hingis and Venus play points against each other, but I'm certainly not expecting Venus to go all out and wouldn't look too much into the result either way.

It's interesting how people think Hingis will lose easily. Their H2H is in favour for Martina. And if Venus will win, people will say that it was obvious from the start that Venus will win. Pity though that no one will remember that Martina retired few years ago. And if Martina will win people will say that it was JUST an exhibition match.

I agree. I saw Serena when she played WTT last summer and she was there to play. Also, someone described WTT as "hit and giggle", which it's not. Nor is it an exhibition. It's team tennis in the truest since. It's definitely different and on a lower scale than regular tennis matches, but it's meant to be fun for the crowd, who are given a baseball-like atmosphere to cheer.

It's also meant as a testing ground for players looking to make comebacks. From the last interview with Martina and Anna, I got the sense that Hingis is still not ready to hang up her rackets for good. Different from Kournikova.

Not much from Venus but a smile. She's definitely a strong, smart, business minded woman. She's too aware of her surroundings to give a reaction.

I wanted to take one with her & Iesha but between the overflow of other fans & the Barnes & Noble employees tryna rush us out of there, I didn't even ask. I purchased 3 books so she probably would've done it.

You can still see small flashes of "it" from Hingis, but she'll need to fully dedicate herself to training and practice if she wanted any chance of doing halfway decently on the tour. Her groundstrokes are inconsistent.

She hit a few nice touch shots. Better than anyone else tonight. But her game is not good.

By the way, both of Martina's rackets cracked and she had to borrow a racket from her teammates at the end. LOL

Jenkins does have a small belly. He played very poorly tonight. Hingis is very rusty and Venus's serve was really poor tonight.

Hingis did have a few vintage touch points though.

An older couple tried to give Hingis two homemade cupcakes after the match. Creepy! She said "thanks so much, but I'm on a diet."

I sat next to a large group of black women during the match. Towards the end, I said "Come on, Martina" and about seven of them turned to look at me with looks of disdain and disgust. One of them even laughed out loud and scoffed while looking in my eyes, "mmm, well, okaaaaay then!"

Reminded me of the obnoxious fans on this board who constantly insinuate things about Americans who don't root for the Williams when playing a non-American.

The stupid fat bitches next to me acted like I had no right to cheer for Hingis.

I definitely don't believe all their fans are black. There were plenty of white people saying "Come on, Venus!" But I know that some of their black fans insinuate that Venus and Serena don't get full support from every American like white legends of the past get (for example, Chris Evert). I would root for Hingis over any player in existence. I don't care if they're American or not. It pissed me off that I was sitting next to people who all turned around and gave me a stare-down when I meekly said "Come on, Hingis". It just reminded me of the same bullshit I encounter here on this forum.

Just check out the recent thread on the Hingis/Venus rivalry. I think the third post already starts with the whole "Venus wasn't considered a 'real American' like Chris Evert" bullshit.

Try checking out highlights from her match against Venus in 2000 USO. Martina was not being booed. She was being cheered for her play. So excuse me if I don't buy your "every time Hingis played Venus" b.s. You can watch on YouTube. Martina had fans, still does.

In any case, if one or two people boo, who cares. If the whole stadium is booing, then that's just rude behavior.

I have the right to cheer for her without anyone judging me, especially when I could tell from their looks that they were thinking to themselves that race played a factor in my cheering. Scoville Jenkins Joins Men's Tennis Staff

6/11/2010

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and head men’s tennis coach T.J. Greggs has announced that former professional tennis player, Scoville Jenkins, will join the staff as assistant men’s coach.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Jenkins will officially assume his role as assistant coach on Aug. 12, announced Greggs in an introduction this afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

“I am very excited to be joining the coaching staff at Kennesaw State,” said Jenkins. “Coach Greggs and the entire staff has been very welcoming and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Jenkins was the first African-American to ever win the Boys' 18 USTA National Hard Court title in singles in the tournament's 89-year history when he captured the crown in 2004 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The six-year professional joins the Owls staff after a career that included appearances at the French Open and U.S. Open.

“There are only so many ways which I can say how excited we are to have someone with Scoville’s international experience and demeanor joining our program.” said Greggs. “This is going to help us become a much more competitive team in the Atlantic Sun Conference.”

During his career, Jenkins has played against the top names in tennis including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Jarkko Nieminen and Jonas Bjorkman. In 2005, Jenkins defeated Swiss veteran George Bastl in the first round of the U.S. Open before falling to Nadal in the second round.

“I want to bring my experience as a former player to the Owls,” added Jenkins. “I will stress hard work, both on the court and in the classroom, and show them that with dedication and hard work, results will follow.”

Over his career, Jenkins has defeated several ranked opponents including No. 12-ranked Dominik Hrbaty, No. 13-ranked Nieminen and No. 18-ranked Vince Spadea. He also has wins over Donald Young and Alexander Peya in the 2009 BNP Paribas Open.

“Because I would like to be a head coach at the collegiate level someday, I am looking forward to gaining experience with the Owls and helping the program reach the highest level possible,” concluded Jenkins.

Jenkins will conclude his professional playing career this summer, playing World Team Tennis for the New York Buzz. On Aug. 6, Jenkins will play an exhibition match at the Rx Optical/Greenleaf Trust & Greenleaf Hospitality Exhibition at Stowe Tennis Stadium on the campus of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.

If you want to cheer someone at a sporting event, cheer them on. Who cares if someone gives you a funny look? No, instead you create some theory that black fans this or nonblack fans do that. And somehow you come out the victim and it proves your self-deluded theory. Come on. It is ridiculous, to say the least. You might want to get help with that problem, or just grow up. What are you fvcking psychic that you can tell what these women that you've never seen before were thinking? Okaaay

What happened to you happens at sporting events all the time so no, I wouldn't have thought those words were racially motivated no matter what race the women were. As a matter of fact that would have been the furtherest thing from my mind.

I go to sporting events all of the time and on occasion I'm sitting near fans of the opposing team who don't like that I'm rooting against their team. Many times people talk shit to me and I talk it back to them and we end up having a great time most of the time. Whoever wins has the last laugh.

If I paid my money and some white women wanted to talk shit about who I was rooting for then to bad for them. It's all about how you respond and IMO the women didn't threaten to kick your ass or threaten you in any way.

I have a cousin that use to be in the NBA and no matter where he played I would root for him. I had grown ass men talk shit to me but that was their fvcking problem. The majority of the time they were white men but on one occasion the guy was black. Once he found out whoI was related he wanted to get all chummy with me. Did I think just because the other guys weren't black they were racist, no. That would have been stupid of me. It's a sporting event for goodness sakes.

All I can say is I've dealt with the same shit on this board when it comes to supporting Hingis over the Williams. I have had people insinuate that it's about race and that I'm a disloyal American.

I am going to share a situation that happen to me one year, when I was attending the Nasdaq100 tournament in Miami. I forget what year it was, after a while you can't remember specifically what year it was. Roddick was playing Chela on the center court, and I am not a Roddick fan. I have soften a little bit, as I now feel sorry for him. Needless to say, the crowd were all cheering for Roddick and me and my girlfriend were cheering for Chela. She was only doing it because she knew I hated Roddick. Well, the looks and hisses we were getting from the fans were ridiculous. At one point she looked at me and said I wish a mutha****** would, and we both busted out laughing. Eventually Roddick did lose the match and we started yelling yes.....yes.

Later that day, Serena was playing an asian girl I think it might have been Tammy. She got down early in the set and a couple of people around us were happy and cheering. We increased our support of Serena and they began to notice us, so they quieted down. During this match, there was a rain delay and when we got back, I noticed that those punk ass people moved to the other side of the section, so they could continue hating on Serena. I looked at them caught their eye and busted out laughing at them. It was hilarious. Listen I was not going to curb my support or fandom because I was in the midst of enemy territory and they should not either.

That is why I like Lakeisha. She may be the sole supporter of Venus and Serena and she doesn't give a damn if the other spectators like it or not. Thats sports people you pick a side, you talk smack and if your team wins you get to talk more smack, however, if they lose you listen to others talk smack about your team until they meet again.

 At cheering against Americas golden boy. I'm basically indifferent to him and the ATP on the whole. I was rooting for him against Fed last year Wimbledon though and felt a bit sorry for him since especially because he is one of the few on the ATP who always defend the Sisters. Anyway it is interesting to hear of the reactions of some fans when you rooting against fellow Americans not named Williams. I hope to attend the USO this year and I might just try rooting against Oudin especially if she is loosing just for the hell and pay back for them rooting against my sweet Vee.

I'm totally with you on the highlighted portions and that is why I don't understand why people claim to "hate" on players because of their fans. I support or "hate" on players based on their own merits and view that totally separate from the individuals who I might not care for who may support various players. Sometimes I'm lucky to "hate" on both a fan and a player I don't like which makes it even more fun. Conversely there are posters I like who are fans of players on my shit list but they are usually the more sensible and reasonable ones anyway.

this x 1000

It makes the match that much better. I've said this before and i'll say it again, i'd love to fill a grand slam final between serena and henin with only fans from either side. Talk about yelling and harrassing, it'd be some good classic stuff.

Maybe they just don't like Hingis. She hasn't got the most squeaky clean reputation you know.

And it's interesting that your mind immediately went to the race issue. Believe it or not, black people are capable of formulating opinions that aren't founded in race

Just like when obama won the election, he got around 50% of white america's vote and 96% of black america....The colour of the ppl involved is a big motivating factor for some.

I wudnt be surprised if venus and serena got this level of vote from black tennis fans. I woudlnt believe any black williams fan if they told me that venus and serena being black had nothing to do with supporting them.

This says more about you than meets the eye.:help: Many black folk were supporting Hilary Clinton, because they did not think Obama was ready . It's only when Bill and Hillary started acting the fool did they turn away from her. many black folk supporting hillary?...i'd go as far as saying "some black folk" supported hillary.

From what i have seen over the years of being on this board is that a large majority of those posters who are black have always supported venus and serena first and other players second. At most i would say 10% of ppl on this board who are black wuld support another player over venus and serena....and thats being generous.

What planet are you from? In the very beginning Hillary Clinton had the full support of the black community and that is out of respect for her husband whom they jokingly called the "first black president". Many of the black congress men and others in the community who endorsed her began dropping like flies after Iowa. Anyway, I don't think it's necessary to try to reason with you. Why don't you question the white posters who will only support white players ? :help:The bottom-line is your narrow mind has already been made up. Black people only support the sisters because of their race

How does "who is going to the Hingis match tommorrow night?" grotesquely morph into: "waaaah! Some fat, BLACK bitches were *mean* to me and they gave me the side-eye *sniffle*" followed by a grand announcement that all black fans like Venus because of some shared melanin... :help:

And this is happening 2010...

To the poster who initiated this? As other posters have pointed out, sports fans are generally quite bitchy, hostile and parochial with a "my team vs. your team" attitude and will eyeball anyone who they perceive to be rooting "against" their 'team' or 'player' - so why are you making race an issue? I bet if they were white fans who gave you a dirty look, while Hingis was playing Oudin on court all we would have heard from you was that some fat bitches looked at you sideways with NO mention of race, and that would have been that. But throw in some melanin and suddenly we have a "race" issue and a fit of the vapours  If you were black, the situation had been reversed, and had written *that* post you'd have already been accused of "playing the race card" or whatever and heartily dismissed. But of course, white people *can't* ever play the race card.

So essentially what we get is: "They gave me a dirty look because..I'm white." Boo-hoo. Obviously, if you're going to cower at a mere look, then you're way too fragile for sports.

As for Bezz - lord, I *almost* have no words for the sheer and utter racist stupidity of his/her posts.

But it's great to know that as a black tennis fan, all those years of rooting for Lendl, Becker, hoping that Ivanesevic would finally break his Wimbledon drought, retrospectively watching Borg matches, being excited by the emergence of Monica, loving Guga, being fond of Safin, and cheering for Nadal - is because... Well, you tell me *why* I've supported these people since you seem to be the all knowing non-black expert who *knows* who black tennis fans gravitate towards and why.

Using your "logic" the real connundrum for me, and for many other black fans who like EITHER Venus OR Serena but not both, is how on earth "race" comes into it? Unless of course, you're trying to suggest that I'm a fan of Venus - because we're both black - but I'm not a fan of Serena because...she's somehow - 'not black'? Because she's white/asian/arabic etc.? Help me out here.

Bezz - If you support people because they happen to share your skin-tone - why don't you be 'honest' with yourself and the rest of us, just come out and admit it and stop projecting your insular, unhealthy screwed up crap on to other people. If that's how *you* think then that's your problem. If you choose who you support on the basis of race, then fine. Own it! Live it! Love it!

And as for the so-called "mods" - is there anywhere on this forum where black tennis fans can just like whoever the hell they like in peace without people who aren't black assuming the authority to 'explain' their tastes to them? Really? Is there?

Black ppl should just admit yu support them primarily because they are both black.

why do white ppl have to "not like them"

Do black people that support venus and serena not like the white players? No, i am sure they do like some.....but will still root for venus and serena to win cos they are black.

:haha: Oh good - so if we're black but support white/asian/middle eastern players etc. then we're allowed to do that - and some of us may *even* do that. But the second that we like anyone who is black it can only ever be on the basis of race.

So if I like vintage Guga - it's because of his gorgeous, fluid background, and loping movement.

But if I like vintage Venus - it wouldn't be because of her movement, athleticism or backhand down the line - but because she's black and I'm black!

If I like Sinead O'Connor - it's because of her voice, her look, her political committment, her bravery and her lyrics.

But if I like Janelle Monae - it wouldn't be because of her singing, her dancing, her style, her creative risk-taking or her lyrics - but because she's black and I'm black!

Woo. It's the solution to everything and the easy way to explain all black people's tastes!

Seriously, reading your posts makes me think that people should have to get a license before they're allowed to write anything on the internet.

Primarily does not change the meaning of the collective "black people", it just highlights the primary motivation of the collective "black people".

Agreed. As someone who was actually at the match, which was so much fun, it's frustrating to see this thread veer into such ugly territory. It needs to be locked or moved to non-tennis, because this clearly has taken a horrible detour away from Venus and Martina.

Agree with Tucker to an extent, but please understand people's frustration at Bezz's nonsense, only to have Spencer Carlos or whoever wade in and then play at faux-innocence - "why is this suddenly about race". Yeah right - almost as if to suggest this thread spiralled out of control all on it's own; or as if that piqued Hingis fan and Bezz weren't the culprits responsible for needlessly introducing race the discussion. Posters like Moby also use similar tactics and get away with it.

And there is this equally disingenuous tendency for mods to do absolutely nothing, allow things to get well out of hand where posters are free to post inflammatory post after post. People naturally get insulted and are put in a position where they feel they should to respond - since of course, the mods aren't doing anything and have this hands-off, laissez-faire approach when it come to race. Those that respond or take insult are then falsely conflated with those who instigate and then it becomes 'equally' "everybody's" fault - or worse, the people who responded or attempted to defend themselves get to carry all the blame. (If they hadn't reacted then all would have been well etc.)

To which I say: :bs:

That Hingis fan (can't remember their username) and Bezz should have kept their foolishness to themselves in the first place - and the mods should have been alert and jumped on this long before it ever got this point.

Anyway - to get back on track:

I thought much of this match was 'meh', but the replay at the beginning was reminiscent of their rallies of old.

Well, as I posted earlier in this thread, you seem very intented to make the point that the vast majority of posters on this thread like Venus and Serena because they are of the same race:black.

And nothing, I mean nothing at all, was going to stop you from driving home that point.
You even ended by "End of .", as if to say, "yeah, I have finally done it. I am so relieved"

Apologies go down so much better when they're straightforward, to the point and don't try to justify the offense. They maybe "your views", but try and understand that stereotyping an entire group of people will usually get an adverse reaction - doesn't matter who the group is. And whether you realise it or not, even if you truly believe that everyone's black people's tastes, and choices in who they support etc. are solely determined by race - :o - and have the utter right to state it and publicly embarrass yourself in the process - you also have the accompanying 'right' to deal with whatever responses and consequences that come with that "freedom of expression" - i.e. namely that some posters will be angry/annoyed/offended, may speak out against you and may even regard you from this point on as ignorant, racist with an extremely low IQ.

That's kind of how cause and effect - say something stupid, thoughtless and inflammatory - and you pay the price. And as you've pointed out yourself, no-one has actually prevented you from speaking your mind. You've *more* than had your say. Now other people are having theirs. That's how dialogue works.

And like it or not, you're delving into some seriously ugly territory. What next? Asian fans only support Asian players? Whites only support other white players? Or is it only some super-special secret knowledge of the ways of black fans that have caused you to single us out?

It's a losing non-argument, it's discriminatory and it can't be justified. Just stop digging already.

This was about the hingis-venus match....who have had one of the best rivalries in tennis :worship:

...No kidding. And at last - something to do with the actual tennis from you.

I would also like to add i was not instructed to do this by any mods....i havernt heard anything from them.

Was that because she was fat, or because she was stupid?

I don't know why she was in my seat, but it wasn't because she was fat.

Well. You got a taste of what I get the majority of the time from non-black tennis fans.

It's awful, and I am very sorry that you've experience it, too, and much more often than I have.

I seriously think you have a problem. You seem to be the one doing the dividing up of the world, white, black, fat, stupid, whatever. I hope you are very young. If not, I feel sorry for you. If you are, I hope you grow up.

Do what you want. Cheer who you wish for, and don't give a damn about what anyone says. That's called living your life. Instead you just sound whiny, pathetic, and the perpectual victim of those horrid people out there.

I give up. :help:

I've read several times over the years on this message board in several different threads that Americans who support Hingis (or Clijsters, Sharapova, etc.) over the Williams are motivated by racism because people should normally support players from their own countries first. Remember, for example, the long thread arguing about how Venus didn't get enough support during the 2005 US Open QF against Kim Clijsters?

It's true that I don't know what the women next to me were thinking, but their reaction wasn't the friendly ribbing of fans supporting the other team. They were hostile looks of disgust, followed by shaking of the head and laughter, as if to say, "Typical."

So, yes, it's true that I don't know what they were thinking, but all the context clues lead me to believe that they were thinking, "Yet another American rooting against Venus. I wonder why?"

Believe it or not, black people are capable of formulating opinions that aren't founded in race

Yes, I know. I was not trying to indict all black people, nor all Williams fans.

Hell, people say all kinds of bullshit on this board as do you. Obviously you take this board much to seriously.

It's true that I have been to very few sporting events, and I have never cheered before at a sporting event in my life either. So I am not used to people talking shit to each other. It's not in my personality to talk shit to people in public, especially not middle aged people. They were in their late 40s or 50s. I'm in my late 20s. I'm reserved enough to where I didn't even feel comfortable telling a middle-aged woman that she was sitting in my seat. I just tried to find an empty one nearby.

But you are right, mykarma. I am not psychic and I don't know what they were thinking. I just felt that it was -- like I have experienced on this message board -- that they were implying I was a disloyal American and/or Venus-hating racist.

I think I am a respectful person in public and I don't like attention from strangers so I never would have cheered for Hingis if I'd known it would bother them and cause them to turn and look at me.

:help:

(Just as an aside, I would never say "fat, black bitches" all together in a set phrase. It sounds racist and offensive. I wrote that I sat next to a "large group of black women". Then I later called them "stupid, fat bitches", and now that I've had a night of sleep to get over the disappointment, I admit that it was very rude and uncalled for, and I apologize.)

I'm not really a sporting event type of person, and I'm not used to the fan interaction that happens at sporting events. I do agree that black people are accused of playing the race card when they have legitimate complaints, and it's very unfair.

That Hingis fan (can't remember their username) and Bezz should have kept their foolishness to themselves in the first place - and the mods should have been alert and jumped on this long before it ever got this point.

I agree. I shouldn't have brought it up, especially not while angry enough to call them fat and stupid. I'm sorry.

Bezz comes accross as either someone who has been thinking/inching about making this point for awhile and was looking for a chance to do so.
Or s/he makes this point often on some other board where race is involved, this is a line of argument.
Or is just a complete racist idiot. I have no clue how he/she can't see the hypocrisy of it's post.

So you took back the "apologies", w/o actually stating it.

One question, since you seem to be an expert on racial factor when ti comes to supporting players. What do you make of posters who support Venus or Serena, AND white players, such Maria, Ana, Henin, Kim, Lindsay, Selles, Capriati, JJ, Elena, Hingis, etc...
Better yet, those who support Venus but do not care for Serena; and vice-versa.
