Because you need more than a serve to win RG?

Graf's:

AO 1988-90.

RG 1987-88, 95-96.

Wimbledon 1988-89, 91-93, 95-96.

USO 1988-89, 95-96.

So, like a bunch.

No. you need not to freeze at the QF stage for no reason.

Monica Seles has never lost at a GS where she was defending champ.

AO: 1991-1993
RG: 1990-1992
US: 1991-1992

She either successfully defended or missed the ones as defending champion due to the stabbing (except AO '96; she missed AO '97 due to injury)

I'm not sure, I just googled her results because I figured she's defended a bunch. I'd say yeah, unless Court has it or Navratilova maybe?

It's probably between Graf, Court & Navratilova. Martina won 6 Wimbledons in a row and Court won 6 AOs in a row, so that's 5 successful defenses right there. Steffi has a total of 10.

Justine Henin defended her RG05 and RG06 titles.

This is great. I remember not too long ago the haters were whining about her not being able to defend slams. She has now defended both from last year. That win against Justine at the AO this year with all of the pressure on her was surely a confidence booster.

Graf is the best at defending Grand Slams - she defended every Grand Slam at least twice, only person to do that.

Court was never able to defend Wimbledon.
Evert did not defend Wimbledon or the AO (although she probably would have defended the AO if she had played it more).
Navratilova did not defend the French or AO.
Seles actually did better achieving a French hatrick, an AO hatrick and back to back USO titles.

So having defended two different Grand Slams puts Serena in great company.

I remember Serena fans saying that Serena doesn't give a shit about defending Majors

Gee, I wonder how stosur became so good on red clay. You could also argue that Federer struggles on clay for a GOAT yet he has every shot ever known to man.

This has to be the most boring thread of all time as most great champions have defended their grand slams - Navratilova, Graf, Evert, Henin, Seles, I can't be bothered to list them, it's too much of a yawn.

in a way Kim Clijsters defended her US Open title of 2005 (didn't play in 2006-2007-2008) by winning in 2009

You don't struggle on clay and reach four consecutive RG finals. Federer is a fine clay court player.

Anyway, Hingis in AO from 1997 to 1999 (singles and doubles)
