Whilst I don't begrudge Pironkova or Kvitova their moment in the sun, I kind of agree with this. These out-of-nowhere winners that are starting to become a regular thing on the tour haven't convinced me that they are consistent and will be regularly playing for titles. It's just messy. I don't like mess. Some people are saying "oh get the fuck over it, it's good to have different winners". Well some of us grew up watching tennis when there were actual champions and winning Slams was special. There was an aura about those champions and we always knew where the benchmark was set. Living in a tennis world where, for example, Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova has a decent shot at a GS title these days just plain scares me. We need the top players to get their acts together and we need them to do it NOW (OK maybe not now, but the next Slam would be nice...) le bon vivant Jul 1st, 2010, 01:11 AM Anticlimactic. Unless Serena and Rafa somehow lose.Do you know what anticlimactic means? Kvitova/Zvonareva/Pironkova winning Wimbledon would be the definition of anticlimax Mary Cherry. Jul 1st, 2010, 01:22 AM Do you know what anticlimactic means? Kvitova/Zvonareva/Pironkova winning Wimbledon would be the definition of anticlimax It was building up to be rather interesting but now the likelyhood is that the ending will be incredibly dull and predictable. For me, it'll come to an anticlimax. Midnight_Robber Jul 1st, 2010, 01:34 AM Started off with clean, consistent tennis - then the matches descended into meh-ville from the 3rd/4th round on and haven't seen any amazing tennis from the women OR the men for the most part. Whilst I don't begrudge Pironkova or Kvitova their moment in the sun, I kind of agree with this. These out-of-nowhere winners that are starting to become a regular thing on the tour haven't convinced me that they are consistent and will be regularly playing for titles. It's just messy. Living in a tennis world where, for example, Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova has a decent shot at a GS title these days just plain scares me. We need the top players to get their acts together and we need them to do it NOW (OK maybe not now, but the next Slam would be nice...) What are the odds that we're going to get a great final? This Wimbledon probably won't even cough up a match the quality of Serena-Elena last year and probably won't end up being one of the historically memorable Wimbledons. (And if it is, it might be for all the wrong reasons...) No truly great returning or shot-making anymore with so many players (male and female) missing returns or shanking shots, the ball is sitting up on the surface like a slow hard-court instead of skidding through. I want to see the grass really play like grass. And just as man can't live on bread alone, I can't get excited about tennis solely on the strength of Serena's amazing serve and its consistency. I need to see much more going on in tennis. I want to see rivalries and a better level of play from the top players across the board and soon. Only thing that this demonstrates though is that the Belgians - who are merely two players - are not "saving" anything as so may predicted. Joana Jul 1st, 2010, 01:36 AM Do you know what anticlimactic means? Kvitova/Zvonareva/Pironkova winning Wimbledon would be the definition of anticlimax It would depend on how they would win.
