POJD POJD POJD POJD POJD

Just in case you guys didn't hear enough from Petra during the match. I have never been more impressed with a player's fighting spirit and drive to win. Petra just refused to lose. She really did, she refused to lose. Kanepi was the better player throughout the entire match but Kvitova upped her game when she needed to and kept urging herself on after every single point.

What you people can't understand is the difference between Henin "allez"ing after every point against a scrub like Sevastova in R1 and a 20-year old Kvitova who is trying to dig herself out of a huge hole while not playing anywhere close to her best tennis to reach the first ever slam SF of her career. But haters are gonna hate regardless, I can just sit here with the knowledge that Kvitova is in the SF and your faves have bombed out or retired.

Petra :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

I was also sad for Kaia, and extremely impressed that she waited around for Petra to walk off of the court. Gracious in victory and defeat, I wish her all of the success in the future because she really should have won this match. Can't say I am sad that she lost it though.

Bit of an unfortunate choke from Kaia  I don't think this will stall her 'comeback' though, she's back in a big way.

As for Petra...wow, what a fighter  Great to see a young player go after a match like that. Her celebratory yelps after Kaia's errors were grating, and way over the top, but I can't help but love her game and the way she fights.

Kaia showed how classy she was after the match. She smiled and congratulated Petra after the match even though one could forgive her for smacking a racquet over head, and even waited for her so they could walk off court together. Most losing players these days would not do that.

Jun 29th, 2010, 04:49 PM
Congratulations, Petra! Amazing comeback (with a little Kaia help) and gritty determination! :worship:

Best emotional match of the tournament.

Swilliams winning, so at least one top player stays alive, and then the supposedly "unknown" players in this "joke" of a semifinal end up giving the best match of the tournament :yeah: Kvitova has definitely broken through, she reminds me of Yanina Wickmayer a bit, if she can hold it together she will be a good player and good for the game.

There was one ball toss from Kanepi somewhere at the end of the second set which showed that Kaia was enormously nervous.

There was no breakpoint for Kvitova all over the match until the end of set 2 (5-6) and Kanepi was playing excellent tennis over two sets.

This CHOKE will end her run because she lost confidence again.
And it is all about Confidence.
After Kanepi won in fed cup against henin she played incredible tennis.

YES :D

Petra was ironclad in clutch moments today.

So much bitterness in this thread. If you can't stand tennis because your favorite is no longer in the tournament, go fly a kite. It's not even good bitchiness, just vindictive cattiness from people whose faves are history.

Kaia blinked and blinked and blinked in the crucial moments. At a certain point even when she was in command you could sense she'd lose, because Petra had -- with great resolve -- stayed in the match.

This was still a tremendous tournament for Kanepi. Hopefully she can see the big picture.

Spot on. For all the people whingeing about upsets this is what the great sport of tennis is all about :worship:

Some disgusting posts in this thread, but sadly expected.

Yesterday Petra was queen champion of WTAWorld for spanking the sunshine off of Wozniacki's anderson so severely and mercilessly.

A day later she's chopped liver because she makes weird noises celebrating after a point.

This forum is driven by grudges more than tennis fandom a lot of the time. This was a good, dramatic match with aggressive shotmaking and even a thrilling rally or two. But people are too caught up in pettiness to care.

Yes. Same coach and similar games. I find Lucie's shots lovelier or more dynamic to look at, but Petra's game is more solid and powerful at its core.

Lucie's grunt is my favorite, so I'm happy to see success from an grunt-imitator :)

Hell yeah, Petra :bounce: Great fight. I felt bad for Kaia though. Hopefully she'll be back in the top 20 soon.

Oh, Kaia, too bad. But a really great tournament for her. I hope she can build upon it in the US Open Series.

What  I left the house for work at 5/2 Kanepi and I thought, Petra  , found a way to win the TB, but then go down 4-0.

What :spit:

I HAVE to see a review of this match!

Well done to Kvitova, some superb serving saved her, what mental toughness!

Kaia, oh dear, how did she lose this match from 4-0, 5-2 and all the mps! She will have nightmares about this. But she has had such a great tournament and will be back in the top 50 so well done to her. Pity they scrapped quality points or she would be even higher!

Amazing fight from Petra. She was just mentally tougher.

As for Kaia, she was given a match on a plate and she didn't take.

Very intense match nevertheless.

Kvitova was annoying yesterday but I forgive her because of that 62 60 against Woz;)
Easy for serena in next round

what a match! and yes, kvitova got carried away - but hey, it was an emotional match for sure. and she usually is a very calm player, at least from the matches i had seen.

kaia  fantastic tournament for her.

And to think that silly little Corswandt was thinking how annoying it would be that now he'd have to share this treasure with bandwagoners, and instead I come in here and find out that everyone is hating on Mighty Kvitty.

Anyways, awesome match. Watched from 5-4 in the 1st IIRC.

Yes, choke. But Mighty Kvitty has the ability to raise her game when it really matters. When it mattered, she stopped missing all those shots that she had been missing until then, and always found a way to return even the biggest serves after 6327952356 consecutive games of relentless ROS suckage. Kanepi still had to be given the chance to choke in all those decisive points - and Kvitova managed to do so, either by gutsy clutch play or by just staying in the points longer than you'd expect such a slowpoke to be able to do. And some of those volleys were amaze (but let's not deceive ourselves - players who, like Kvitova, use classic volleys instead of drive volleys for putaways tend to look like better volleyers than they really are).

Some astonishing high intensity, high pace rallies considering that this was a match between two slow players (even though most of the match consisted of both players hitting the ball as hard as possible straight up the middle of the court). Kvitova managed to win a few more rallies than I expected, but still Kanepi being a somewhat better mover and playing a higher % game often gave her the edge.

I was rooting for Kvitova not just due to fanboy-ism, but because I find her game to be more flairsome and spectacular than Kanepi's. Kanepi plays a variation of the generic flat hitting, high % power baseline game + very good 2nd serve that you'll also find in Wickmayer. She's not a flat out ace server, but her serve is so reliable and her 2nd serve so good that she ends up being deceptively tough to break (Kvitova's woeful ROS notwithstanding). For most of the match, she was hitting nearly every single groundstroke consistently hard, but nowhere near close to the lines (again, just like Wickmayer) - save for the choking parts, Kanepi hardly missed throughout the match. But it was solid and work(wo)manlike rather than inspired play IMO, and that also worked to her detriment when it was time to step it up and close out the match.

Not exactly looking forward to the STEP TO THIS!1!! beatdown by Reenus the Serving Machine, but it's all part of life's rich tapestry I guess.
