Bloody hell.

At this point, the players left in the Wimbledon draw are Serena, Li, Kvitova, Kanepi, Zvonareva and Pironkova.

Who'd have picked that :speakles:

Granted, this result is not as much of a shock as the Venus match, but I'm surprised at how Kim just couldn't reassert herself in the final couple of sets. Congrats to Vera on holding her nerve and deservedly moving through!

I actually thought Kim played rather well. She hit the ball decently, but Zvonareva was as good as she can ever be. Serving well, moving really well and getting everything back. Maybe Kim played the wrong tactics by trying to outhit her from the get go, and just like Justine, this isn't her natural game.

Oh my god. It's going to be a Serena vs Pironkova/Zvonareva final. I might just pull a Sweetcleo. :help:

Clijsters just keeps proving she can't play TWO error free sets on grass with her technique. Solid, smart play from Zvonareva. She really served better than I've seen her. So much conviction on her serve, got a lot of out of 2nd serve. Came forward and was aggressive as well.

Yes, exactly. Her technique breaks down even more so on grass, especially when she tries to play this aggressively. But it actually held on more than what I expected.

That said, I love Vera's loopy topspin. Not by intent, because it's her natural game, and at risk of sounding like a broken record, Kim still struggles with anything heavy and above shoulder height on the backhand. Sure way to get weak shots and errors from her.

Wozniacki really missed the boat at the US Open. If she had held firm and gone for Kim's backhand... :help:

What a fantastic match by Vera :clap2:

But personally, as a fan of serving - Vera served absolutely brilliantly!!

Before the match, the commentators said she had only dropped serve twice all tournament!!!

Its great to see a female player serve intelligently and into the corners to open up the court - great stuff.

This assessment is shit. She actually fought a lot, and was really trying hard. This is not 2006 Kim. She wanted to win this match, and wanted to do it by playing an aggressive baseline grass court game. She's just not very good on the surface and I've seen her play this year a lot worse.

What I'm really surprised by is how well Vera managed this match mentally especially after she she blew out her chances in the first set. Kim was even kinda lucky to get away with the first.

She could (and should) have made the Tour's most notorious choker win the match, instead of giving it to her on a platter of unforced errors. :help: And most of those errors were big misses off of routine shots, so... I'm not sure you were watching the same match as the rest of us

Jun 29th, 2010, 02:27 PM
Yeah but you have to know that in her heart of hearts Bepa would much rather play Kim than Justine. Justine is a much tougher matchup for her IMO regardless of any H2H. I really think this is justice because Kim did not really play the level required to be in the latter part of the tourney. Justine fell and then her brain leaked until Kim won easily with pretty average tennis. Bepa, one of my old favorites, got the job done despite all the haters. The key was her knowing that she could beat Kim. Nadia did it and so could Bepa!

Good match. Very good quality until the last game of 2nd set in which Kim concentration went away and never really came back. Vera kept a steady good level the whole match, didn't make many DF, returned well and held it tohether mentally. Some very good rallies from both and amazing volleys.

Kim's first Wimbledon since 2006, not bad. Vera back to No. 11, where she belongs. Kim gained some points in the race aswell and hopefully will make it to YEC and show her indoor class there.

Kim!!! :banghead: My god! Your serve didn't have anything on it and your forehand was abysmal!!! You looked so deflated... WTF!!!

With Venus losing, this was such a chance for Kim (or Justine for that matter) to reach the finals at Wimby to fight Serena!!! :fiery:

But unfortunately both really played like crap...

Vera has a good game. She fell on green clay in 2009 and had an ankle injury.
She was in a quarter where she had to play Jankovic, then Justine/Kim then Venus, then Serena.
So it looked impossible. Now a final is realistic

After a nine months long injury and a three months long "fuck I can´t believe I blew this match AO open match"- timeout Vera is finally back to form. She should have no trouble to get into the top five, until the end of the year, if she can keep it up. Her first serve is awesome, her second serve is there........ocassionally.

You must be joking... Fluke? Kim beat Venus and Serena to win the US Open and was playing absolutely fantastic. Kim's stunning loss at the Australian was a fluke. Today she didn't play well but let's face it: Kim is not a grass player just as Serena and Venus are no claycourters at all.

Kim is the queen of hardcourt. I'm not saying she will win the US. Not at all. But I would be surprised if she didn't do well there.

But well, you never know...

Kim beat Ju three times this year! And she leads 13-12 in H2H... Fluke? I don't think so. I love Ju, but she is not playing her best tennis the last couple of months. And if she's not at her best, a lot of players can beat her as the last few months have proven.

I hope Kim and Ju find their best form real soon, because they have been slumping a little bit the last few months...

Surprising but pleasing that Vera displayed none of her usual nuttiness in such a big match. This was much more entertaining to watch than the Kim/Justine match yesterday, at least until Kim reverted to missing so much. I seriously thought she would pull it together, particularly as I think SHE noticed the Venus result on the scoreboard. Maybe Vera's head-in-towel focus helped.

She's always been talented, but the ankle problems and the way she self destructed emotionally seemed to have Vera on a downward curve. Good for her that she played such a solid game today. However, I think a Kim/Serena final was what many would have liked to see. Didn't see Serena, but she's serving so well, it is hard to see her losing. At least Kim has won a slam. Surely any of the others will be out psyched as well as out played. Still, after Venus' horror show today, it isn't totally out of the question Serena might have a bad day - surely extremely unlikely!

As for Kim, much like Justine and despite her denials, she isn't consistent enough. She's not been great in the last 2 matches. Like Justine, there is some good play but too many errors. Both of them need to get back to full match intense focus. The rest of the tour also need Serena to lose interest or fitness as barring RG she's been very dominant at the slams for the last 2 years. Her consistency in big matches is unmatched right now.
Vera played a great match, but can she go on and play 2 more great ones? Still, nice to see her back up there and hopefully back to the top 10 and without the tears and tantrums! I was impressed with her movement today. Didn't spot any ankle strapping, so hopefully she's now fully fit. She also mixed it up well (remember that Justine - variety?) and hit few unforced errors (not sure of the stats but WAAAY less than Kim.)

Vera Zvonareva always hits a good ball but for her it's about stringing it together AND keeping her cool.

I'm glad she did that, and good luck in the semi-s.

Too bad Kim, she can take a lot of positives out of this tournament. I'm sure she'll excel in the next part of the season.

Zvonareva should have won this in 2. She was the more solid player throughout.

But considering the circumstances and her vulnerability to chokes/meltdowns, being that consistent from the ground was no mean feat. Solid serving, too, and for once she didn't remain glued to the baseline when she had a chance to move forward and finish the point off. What surprised me the most was that Zvonareva's ground game, much like Azarenka's, tends to let her opponents find a rhythm as (for all her skill at shifting the direction of the ball) she mostly hits the same ball over and over, and thus the elite never really plays poorly against her (even in the rare occasions that Zvonareva does beat elite opponents, she has to play nearly 100% flawless to be able to do so). But again and for once that didn't happen - Clijsters' timing was completely off throughout. She had managed to raise her game from "comically awful" to "decent" vs Henin, but not for this match. She sprayed FHs and netted BHs from beginning to end. Winning virtually no free points off her serve didn't help either. She was constantly having to work hard to hold serve, whereas Zvonareva often held comfortably (aided by Clijsters woeful returning, granted).

Still, like I said, credit to Zvonareva for a rock solid performance.

Everyone keeps talking about Clisters poor play - but I want to know HOW THE HELL SHE PLAYED SO GREAT AGAINST KIRLENKO!! Honestly, she's been out of action and I really didnt expect much from her here. In fact, after watching how great Kirlenko played against grass lover Shenay Perry the previous round I thought for sure she'd get an out of form Kim, but Kim looked amazing. Especially on serve. Kirlenko is supposed to be a top notch returner and again, she did a great job on Perry's powerful serve but she was constantly fooled by Kim. Never got a read on the serve until the end, but then Kim changed it up the very next service game and won the match. Plus kim's timing off the ground and her own return game was really good!
SO WHAT HAPPENED. Why did she look so good for one match!! Clisters plays such a high risk shotmaking game since her comeback that she's really hard to predict.Shes either on or off and can switch in the middle of the match. Is this due to the hormones after you have a kid - haha. :help:

Anyway - Im completely baffled by Kim's great form against kirlenko more than her bad form in the next too. PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND :help:
