Solid, mentally strong stuff from Pironkova. One shouldn't deny that, no matter how subpar Venus was.

That last game and last point were a great synopsis of the match. Pironkova giving a mix of pace and dink, Venus trying to adapt and respond, but couldn't.

This girl deserved to win..she stayed cool, calm and relaxed...had a strategy and it worked......Venus fell back to her old unforced error ways.....i'm VERY dissapointed in the way she played. First serves were never there, spraying balls...it was really a shitty mess lol Maybe this will motivate baby sister to carry it on home now ;) Congrats to Pironkova...though....Venus just get ready for the doubles...*sigh* It wasnt meant to be for you this year....the way she played throughly convinced me.

Pironkova played Venus like I've always dreamed for a girl to play the Williamses on grass with slices, variations in depth, pace, height, angles, diagonals... and not ballbashing. That girl is a GOAT. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

This shows that the girls just doesn't know how to face the Williamses on grass they just try to out ballbash the ballbashers. Venus is such a ballbasher when plan A goes wild she has absolutely no plan B. Poor her.

Saying that Pironkova hasn´t a game is totally ridicolous, she was maybe waiting and pushing from forehand many times this match, but people who knows her know also that she can hit a ball very hard and she can hit a LOT of winners, but also that her forehand might be incredibly off someday, when he is hitting just bombs (remeber her match against Henin in RG) and I think she just had a great strategy how to beat Venus today:shrug:

F*** you Venus, most pathetic I ´ve seen from her in Wimbledon since she lost to Magdalena GRZYBOWSKA in 1997 :weirdo:
Terrible service starts, terrible UEs, nothing positive today, can´t understand such a performance!
I am used to such performances , here and there, but at Wimbledon? Really terrible, no fight at all anyway, couldnt even hold when she had her chance at *21, just one pathetic performance, and some people bad repped me as I said that she wont have any chance to get into the final in this shape :weirdo:

If only can continue in this shape, then better retire, Venus!
Results may look good this year, but no wins at all against top players, and now she even lost 26 36 against Pironkova, who didnt play bad at all, but just has to be beatable for a player like Venus on grass!
Congrats Pironkova, stayed cool unlike Groth yesterday, otherwise Venus would have lost yesterdy already anyway

Absolutely BRILLIANT PLAY from Pironkova. Excellent game plan by mixing it up wonderfully and forcing Venus to come up with the pace. They thought at the beginning of the match that it would be Groth x's 2 but what a great game plan. Then for her to step up and serve it out at the end cool, calm, and collected. NOTHIN BUT RESPECT!!!!! :worship:

Venus, you didn't deserve to win!! Your game plan is to hit harder and you failed miserably. You didn't even try and reign it in and find a rhythm!! HORRIBLE!! Pironkova OWNS you at the majors!! :o

Terrible play from Venus; this might be the end unfortunately.

bruintennis
Jun 29th, 2010, 01:45 PM
This is so pathetic, Venus played horribly and was just purely confused by her opponents. It's so maddening to watch, it's not even like Pironkova had to beat a good Venus, she always gets lucky and play Venus when she's not at her best. This Wimbledon is indeed full of drama, who knew the same girl, four years later, can draw an exact performance from Venus, a horrendous one.

by the way, some other poster called Venus a ballbasher and I completely disagree with that, Venus is very methodical and she continuously talks about the importance of strategy and understanding the game. She wouldn't be where she's at in her career if she had been just a ballbasher. There's a ton of other ballbashers who're not at the top of the game. There's nothing you can do when your game is off (think Kim Clijster at this year's AO), no one calls her a ballbasher. We should discern a difference between headless ballbashing and just having an off day.

moby
Jun 29th, 2010, 01:46 PM
Pironkova is not the best match up for Venus. If Venus is off, she knows how to take advantage, which cannot be said for the majority of players on the tour.

Her backhand is a weapon. Her forehand sucks, but the odd pace, height and spin on it keeps it safe against Venus, who hates those kinds of balls. She's fairly creative on the defence with her low slices and chips. She moves well. Has a good serve. Basically her biggest weakness is one that Venus does not readily take advantage of.

And she has two GS wins to show for it. The first time you think it might be an aberration, but you have to ask questions the second time.

I've always thought outside of Serena that is the right way to play Venus.

Venus' success on grass has much rested in the fact that most of the tour are ballbashers and try to out ballbash her. Giving Venus nothing pace and flat hard balls on grass has only beaten her once in all her Wimbledon campaigns and it was a controversial match.

I was skeptical if Pironkova could win, but her slice FH would definitely be instrumental to any success if she were to have any. Pironkova just absorbs pace SO WELL. It is a very nice aspect of her game. Venus just fails to adjust time and time again and at 30 years old it is fair to ask serious questions.

You have got to be kidding me. Venus was far from alright. Venus played like shyt, it was a horrible match from Venus. When Venus plays like that she makes anyone look great. Pironkova deserved to win. If Venus came to this match half stepping which she did, she got exactly what she deserved. She was more content to wait for Pironkova to mess up when the entire time she was the one who was messing up. I hate when Venus turns into an error making machine.

Congrats to Pironkova who simply played her game. To be honest she was never under any pressure because Venus was off throughout the entire match.

Now come on Serena & take this title!!!

We should discern a difference between headless ballbashing and just having an off day.
Venus has 0 plan B when plan A doesn't work. :help: And you call Venus the greatest grass courter of all times ?

For those saying Pironkova had no weapons...she had the strongest weapon in tennis...THE MIND!!! She played a very smart match forcing Venus to come up with pace and mixing up each ball. She would give powder puff and then hit a hard flat shot!! It was a great game plan and this is why I can see people not liking the kind of ball bashers who have no plan B. Venus fell into the trap and failed miserably today. She didn't deserve to win.

Venus was horrible. My God. Her worst performance ever at Wimbledon.

Yep that sums it up - she's lost before but this was soooooooo bad. No rhyme or reason for her to play like that - she was hitting her serves all over the place, forhand was wide, long or into the net - whenever she hit it into the court it was a surprise and her volleying was abysmal to say the least. I quite enjoyed Pironkovas bizare pushy loopy choppy forehand - Venus had little to no clue as to what to do with it. Pironkova did what she needed to do and has a great backhand - fair play and I hope she enjoys her moment and has a big opportunity to make the final.

Vee  I love you

Very classy response. Tsveti played really smartly; she knows she can't overpower Venus so she kept her her guessing all match, drawing the errors. It's not about Venus playing really poorly without reason, it's about the match up. And Tsveti figured out how to counter brilliantly. I'm over the moon for her; what a great, possibly career-changing win!

It was really beautiful to watch the constrast in styles. Outside of her junkballing she can absorb pace very, very well. I mean she wasn't disturbed when Venus hit smashes, swinging volleys, and drilled groundstrokes at all.

Incredible. I dont feel so bad now that she beat Marion.

My first thoughts after this match.

Pretty much. We can say Venus played her worst ever match or whatever but at the end of the day she was the one who's been here a million times before and it was Pironkova's first time. There is no excuse for Venus. Pironkova, as she said in her post-match interview, came out here believing she could win right from the start. She wasn't prepared to lose today. I think that previous GS win over Venus was HUGE for her today, especially if we can compare Pironkova's attitude today to Venus' last two Wimbledon QF's.

Anyway, fearless match from Pironkova, Venus almost seemed too casual. It's been so long since she's been pushed at Wimby in a pre-final round, it almost seemed like she didn't know how to react.

Pironkova still has not lost a set. She plays Vera next most likely and last time they played Pironkova beat her 6-0 6-1 or something of the sort. Yesterday people were laughing at me for predicting a Pironkova win and today Tzveti proved that she can do it. Played with confidence and mixed it up, she used her head and won with strategy. I am so proud of you Tzveti, you are amazing!!!!

As for Venus, she was nowhere near her best but she was not expecting Tzveti to play like this, Pironkova mixes it up and gives you no rhytmn, its the way to beat a Williams on grass, change the pace, slice, lob, etc.

Anyways Venus fans do not feel bad. Venus is one of the greatest players of all time and that will never change.

it is junk balling, but it works.

she slices the forehand because she can barely rally with her topspin one. then when she does hit topspin off it she loops it up as it is the only way she can get it consistently in court. her backhand is a very good shot so she hits it flat and hard and that is another change of pace. then she bombs 1st serves but has a dementieva circa 2004 sliced 2nd serve.

it wasn't some masterful tactical plan from pironkova to play how she did, it is her game and she has to employ it as she doesn't have other shots.

what it did show however is what i have been posting for years, venus is the most 1 dimensional and wooden multiple slam champion ever. she really has 1 way of playing and has no idea how to do anything different or adapt it let alone try and do anything different.

Venus was alright, Tsveti just too good today. Great match.

Exactly right. Venus lovers will say that she was error prone and couldn't keep a ball in play and just gave the match away. In reality, Pironkova played with fantastic strategy. She forced Venus into those errors with placement and change of spins, as opposed to power. This victory reminds me a lot of Jana Novotna's defeat of Venus in the '98 Wimbledon QF and her attacking style with change of spin (while Novotna attacked more with net play and Pironkova with speed). Simply put, Venus lovers will hate on Pironkova but she was simply the better player today. Fantastic game plan executed brilliantly.

Still digesting this result. Tsveti amazed me yesterday when I saw her live vs Bartoli and watching this match on TV has reinforced that massively. I would love to see Tsveti just keep this going for two more matches. That would be so cool, it would be absolutely thrilling.

But even more that that, I hope Tsveti learns to bring the form she has shown this fortnight to the rest of her career. I would hate for the wonderful tennis she has shown this week to be a one off. I want to see more of this. :inlove:

As for Venus, well it wasn't good. I have no doubt some of the credit of that so goes to Tsveti who certainly threw Venus's timing off with her changes of pace and low bouncing slices. But it is sad to see Venus get so much criticism for one sub par performance. She is still the best grass court player of the last decade and one of the greatest grass court players of all time, and this match changes that not in the slightest. To those who suggest she retires, I would suggest they are reactive fools. Venus still has a huge amount to offer this sport.

Jun 29th, 2010, 02:31 PM
I don't think I'm saying anything new or revolutionary here but the main reason Tsveti beat Venus was because she stuck to her game plan and kept her nerve. So many of the WTA players nowadays are nothing but pure ballbashers who lose it when Plan A doesn't work and don't have a back-up plan in place.

Also, whenever they get a lead on a player the caliber of a Venus, Serena, etc, they choke because they can't believe they can win. Venus was probably expecting Tsveti would get nervous in the second set and choke, but she didn't.

I really don't think Venus will win another slam. Her peak has long time gone away. Vee was just lucky that Groth didn't have mental fortitude in the key points. Champs to always play their great to win but in Venus' case you just feel the end coming.

Venus was tweeting about her book way past midnight UK time last night! I was like :rolls: and  and :help: when I saw the tweet. I just had this sneaky feeling that she'd tank today.

I hate when she does this ... I saw those tweets too

I don't think twitter is the reason Venus lost.

And a shout out to all you douche bags who call for the #2 player in the world to retire because she lost at Wimbledon...I hope you all have a setback and are then never allowed to do something you love to do.

Wittingly or otherwise, a tactical display from Pironkova of the highest level.

On other surfaces, Pironkova can look late, rushed, devoid of any length, depth or width of any kind, but it was all change today. Her backhand is such a insidious shot, that doesn't really appear to have that great facility, but it was so effective today. Wonderful disguise and footwork to move around that wing, and her follow-through is technically very sound. The way she would break up Venus's CC patterns on occasion was very impressive, and just compounded William's problems from the baseline.

Pironkova is not a textbook athlete given her size and not the most agile of movers, but she anticipates and keeps her body so low on grass. Kinda like Karolina Sprem circa 2004, with less power, but much more control and fludity moving from shot tpo shot. Everytime Venus looked to try and dictate in the forecourt, Pironkova had such great instincts, always keeping the ball low and sharp CC, not giving Venus any 'gimme' volleys or short balls at all. Even when Venus had fairly short puttaway shots, it was palpable that Venus was rattled by Pironkova's ability to read her shots so well. Kinda reminded of the match vs Myskina at the French, Venus's shot selection and timing really stretched to the limits. Giving her game was off, it just spelt an uncomfortable day at the office.

Also, how fucking good was the Pironkova first serve? Deep, accurate and even dare i say- clutch! Such a contrast to other matches i've seen, where her serve just looks so precarious and attackable. Every part of her game was just so resilient today, even her forehand which actually got increasingly more offensive as the match went on. That forehand to break for 4-2 (i think?) in the second was just great.

For Venus, this is by far going to rate as one of her worst career losses, giving her record here at Wimbledon and the manner in which she lost. Her form looked tetchy against Groth yesterday, but this was such a lapse display from Venus. Lost rythm early on serve, and her game followed. The longer the rallies extended, the more Venus's groundstrokes became more vulnerable, unable to constantly break the barriers of the Bulgarian's defense. Despite Pironkova's superlative play, Venus's shot selection was so dodgy. Trying to blast forehands off the first shot, low% attempts at trying to hit backhands DTL. It must've been frustrating for Williams, who wasn't timing the ball well enough to plasy first-strike tennis, and was being out-played in long rallies. Tough day for her obviously.

I wouldn't say Venus is at all finished after this, but her tennis is certainly not peaking at the right stages of the year. This was a kind of loss you'd expect in the second round of Rome, not the QF's at Wimbledon, where she often and usually always raises her game. That said, i don't think it's time to post Venus's tennis obituary yet.

Still, what a wonderful win for Pironkova! Deserved and definitely one to remember for her. Very well played.

Venus was absolutely woeful but she got absolutely no rhythm from Tsveti.

I've actually seen Tsveti play better than that. She was just solid and confident when it mattered and didn't even need to flatten her FH as much as I thought. As I've been saying all week she moves extremely well on grass, absorbs pace well and can direct it back to open up the court. She has always been an excellent returner but now that her 1st serve has been juiced up she doesn't have to solely rely on one or the other which meant today that even if she was broken it never felt as though she'd blown her chances. That FH is of course an abomination, but when she flattens it out it can be collosal.

This is result is good for the game. The WTA is in dire need of new, fresh, young faces in the latter stages of slams. Of course Serena is going to win this event but having someone upset Venus like this undoubtedly brings some positive publicity for the game.

I opened one eye to check my tennis live scores and saw that Vee was down 6-2. i went back to sleep. I wasn't waking early to see Venus play like shit and lose. I don't have to watch this match to know that Venus played like shit against someone who has absolutely nothing to lose. Pironkova :lol::lol::lol:

I love these threads where the same people who were calling Venus washed up are now saying what a big win this is.

Pathetic from Venus. Absolutely pathetic, and I have no sympathy for her whatsoever.

I only saw the first set and it was horrific. But credit to Pironkova, she played smart, was so patient, moved well, served huge and aggressive at the right moments.

Probably the worst performance and worst loss for Venus at Wimbledon since her debut though. Even i'm slowly losing hope, and i'm usually one of the more delusional Venus fans. Doubles specialist.

Wimbledon is the only place that Venus plays like a top 5 player. A beat down like this from a scrub in the latter rounds of Wimbledon ....Venus just retire. at this point you're just tarnishing your record.

I did not even consider Tsveti beating Venus at all. :inlove: :inlove:
Her serve and her backhand were very consistent and she could use them as strong weapons at some time. Her forehand was very solid and Venus could not handle the different pace Tsveti gave her. :worship: :worship: :woohoo: She never did well on grass and now she is into a GS SF right on that surface.
Venus. I still believe you have one more Wimbledon at least left in you.

Serena now is definitely "licking her chops" ::lick:: after disposing of Li 7-5 and 6-3..the announcers were saying before the match "is Li the best of the competitors left for Serena?" and the answer was "no, it was yesterday"...as Maria was the only one to come close. So unless one of the two "K''s can knock her off, Vera certainly can't however she did a great job against Kim who after the first set had no answers against her and of course she deserved to win. :worship: As Cliff Drysdale said about the Venus/Pironkova match "OH! MY!" : Good job by the 82nd ranked kid and she too deserved her famous win (odds 150 to 1) but she played several points like Martina Hingis did who still holds a winning record against Venus.:hearts:..she mixed it up, didn't try and outhit Venus, she loves pace, so this gal was smart in mixing in lobs, did a terrific net cord once and took full advantage of Venus's many, many mistakes. So we will get to see only one Sister I guess in the final however I wonder what quality tennis we will see, hopefully whoever goes against Serena will (as the Brits say) "Give it a Go!" :bounce:
