Wozniacki won 22 points, and hit just 4 winners in the entire match. You'd think if you're losing you'd try and turn it up a notch, but not if you're Caroline Wozniacki apparently.

I've never seen a Wozniacki match where I just felt that she had no chance in hell. Not against Serena. Not against Clijsters. Not against Venus. Not against Henin. But this girl... Kvitova... played flawless tennis at a very, very high level with inspiring confidence.

On the other side Caro couldn't handle the power and was hitting more UE than usual. She definitely should have tried something different in the second set, even if it didn't work try some dropshots, attack her backhand maybe even a bathroom break , Kvitova was on a roll and Caro couldn't stop her.

I don't agree. Nothing on Kvitova's CV has approached the magnitude of her performances at this year's Wimbledon. These crunching defeats of Azarenka and Wozniacki would be impressive even for Serena Williams. She has always been a streaky player but this is a new level and she could well prove a handful even for the world no 1 if she keeps it up.

For Caroline, what an embarrassment! She looks like she's just making up numbers in the top 5 at the moment. Poor!

kman, stop with the hyperbole here. Kvitova was great but stop this, the reason she was so great is because Wozniacki (and Azarenka) just give her balls at the perfect pace to completely annihilate when she plays like that. Caroline could have won that - if she was able to do anything other than roll the ball into the middle of the court she would stand a chance, but she can't.

Forehand and its horrible technique completely exposed by Kvitova consistently pummeling the ball at that side.

Agreed with the response to kman. All Kvitova did was power the ball up the middle of the court repeatedly, which was more than enough to completely disable Wozniacki's game. If she plays Serena, Maria, Venus or even Clijsters: 1) she's not going to be able to hit as hard or consistently, and 2) the up-the-middle tactic isn't going to be as effective. Maybe she can step it up to give them a match  But Kvitova's certainly not unbeatable :help:

The problem is, she did the same to Azarenka in second set, 6-0. It doesn't matter if you're a pusher or one of the biggest hitters. If Kvitova comes out like this, you're going DOWN. I hope Serena is prepared and saw what happened to Azarenka and Caroline. Because if not, she'll be joining them in the what-the-fuck-just-happened club. I'll bet when Kvitova loses to Serena in the semis you'll be saying she played poorly :help: But it will just be that her strategy doesn't work against someone who can consistently hit with her. And if she does beat Serena, I'll gladly eat my workds.

You also think Woz' two tight victories over Dementieva last year was rape. So I think you just use it when it suits you (ie. your epic failures at justifying Caroline ).

You're just :help:

Azarenka = huge hed case. Wozniacki = huge pusher. Kvitova just pounds the ball up the middle. Hard, sure, but nothing new, and nothing a smart big-hitter can't handle.

I'll bet when Kvitova loses to Serena in the semis you'll be saying she played poorly :help: But it will just be that her strategy doesn't work against someone who can consistently hit with her. And if she does beat Serena, I'll gladly eat my workds.

I recall using the word "crushed", but of course I was joking back then as those were close matches.

Now I'm being dead serious. I could've easily pulled a "Caroline beat her last two times, Kvitova just caught Caroline on an off-day" but I'm not going to because this was so far from that it's not even funny. This was not merely Kvitova catching Caroline on an off-day. This was the most superior opponent Caroline has ever faced. Not on paper, surely, but based on performance.

Serena is our only hope. If Serena doesn't break this girl, our 2010 Wimbledon winner will read: Petra Kvitova.

No, I'm not here to make excuses for Caroline. Like I said, it would be easy to just bring up Caroline's previous wins over Kvitova and blame it on an off-day.

I'm here to give Kvitova her full credit and prepare TF for the meltdown that is likely to result should Kvitova get past Serena and win the title.

I hope Kvitova has the capacity for getting nervous, but it sure didn't look like it against Azarenka and Wozniacki who are fairly big names on the tour. I hope Serena's aura can reveal some cracks.

Otherwise, god help us all.

The simple truth is that Wozniaki is just not talented enough to be a ball striker. Her talent is quite limited and pushing is all that she is capable of. She is playing to the best of her abilities. She won't be able to improve because she doesn't have the talent to be an aggressive shotmaker. She misses when she tries to hit a powerful shot.

Let this be a lesson to the up-and-coming female players. Look how far up the rankings the weapon mental strength can take you!!! It's such a neglected part of the game and it's such an asset.

Horrible loss for Caro. But to be expected with her current form. Caro has had problems throughout 2010 and she's been playing nowhere near as well as last year. But all young players go through such a phase, especially if they have to defend high rankings. In my opinion, this season will be very satisfactory if she can keep her place in the top 8 at year end. Then she'll be ready to get back to the highest level again next year.

We'll see how Kvitova does if she does play Serena, but that's an entirely different match up. For one thing, look at their serves:

Serena's avg 1st/2nd serve speed today: 113/96 mph.
Caro's avg 1st/2nd serve speed today: 96/85 mph

Serena's 2nd serve speed is the same as Caro's first!

For another thing, other players are scared of playing the Sisters, especially at Wimbledon. Not so much Caro so they can go out and play their best against her.

Caroline might have beaten this Kvitova twice before but this was not the same player... this was... something else.

onto where? where does she go from here now. does she carry on playing the game that has gotten her to top 4 but has gained her no real titles and respect, or does she gamble and try and change her game to see if she can go futher and win big.

she may have to take a step back to go forward, is she or her money grabbing dad prepared to do that.

This is exactly why Caroline needs to be more agressive, she had no answers today. Hopefully she learns from this.

Petra. That was brilliant from her. :worship: She deserves to be ranked much higher.

The trouble is there are a lot of these players who hit hard who posters rave about as should be ranked higher. But they are not consistent enough. A month or so ago it waas Rezai dishing out beatings to Henin, JJ and Venus and there was Stosur to Henin, Serena and JJ. Now it's Petra. It's different players all the time on a really hot streak and she's just beaten Azarenka as well as Caro.

Yeah Caro does need to become more aggressive - but her team know that and she has to do it without abandoning her strengths. She doesn't generate the pace other players do. But look at that failed experiment JJ did when she bulked up and lost her speed.

Finally - it's all very well for others saying Caro is an awful #3. But who would be a good #3 right now. What top player hasn't had a bad shock defeat recently.

the question wasn't really directed at you, more in general, where does caro go from here? it seems the tours catching upto her and shes reached the as far as she can go playing as she does.

i will be very intrested to see how caro plays on the US hardcourts, she must ve doubting how effective her game is at the biggest stages now, will this give her the kick to change or will she continue to stay static.

After playing like a GOAT against Vika, I expected Petra's form to come down a little bit and for Caro to sort of push (no pun intended) some errors out of her.
:help:

Petra's gonna hit the wall eventually though, she's just not the most consistent girl out there and right now she's clipping lines, tomorrow she could be just missing.

Congrats to Petra though.

Wozniacki is such a fraud it's not even funny. Everything those wicked h8t0rz say is true - everything. How many further times will Wozniacki have to be exposed like this before people realize she's overranked by about 20 places?

Also, really sweet that Kvitova was the one who got to do the deed.

Doesn't power come from your core, shoulder turn and taking the ball early ? When I watch Caro's FH for instance in slow mo she doesn't have either one moreover most of the little power she generates gets lost in the tons of spin she puts in the ball.

Caroline musn't make the error of bulking up but just ameliorating her technic. She needs a more explosive shoulder turn, stop brushing so much, cut the trajectories so that she can use the juice of the ball and at last stop taking the ball so late since she doesn't have natural power that's what I think.

Caroline needs to understand that it's surely nice to push but pushing with variety (dropshots, slices), angles, with different depth, pace, height, spins on shots, net play and correct transitioning can mkae her pushing way more easier and that's what Radwanska understood and seems to do very well.

Maria was in Caro's section at the 2009 USO and 2010 IW
At the USO Dementieva, Kuznetsova and Sharapova were all in Wozniacki's quarter.

Wozniacki's biggest problem from a technical standpoint is her utter and complete lack of racquet head speed. This is the reason why the ball looks so damn slow coming off of her strings. When she comes up against a player like Kvitova who swings for the fences on every shot, she has to increase her racquet head speed so that she can really get her weight behind every shot. When she just tries to push it back in the court and lowers her racquet head speed, she leaves the ball extremely short if it even makes it over the net.

Every once in a while she will really lean into a BH DTL and have full weight transference and racquet head speed into the shot but other than that she is more concerned over just making the ball between the lines and waiting on her opponent to miss. She'll be stuck in the 4-8 range with no significant tournament victories until she changes that, among many other things.

The racquet head speed comes from shoulder turn, core it's barely impossible to generate racquet head speed with just your arms unless you're a sort of feminine Nadal that's the base of her problem. She doesn't use her upper body effectively to generate any kind of RHS. Wozniacki just needs to review just mostly all her stricking system and her father sucks at doing so.

Excellent from Kvitova. I watched her at the US Open last year in her QF loss to Wickmayer. The talent was apparent but she was so hit-and-miss. Today she had the right strategy though. She ripped so many balls hard up the middle of the court. Plenty of safety. And Wozniacki simply couldn't handle the pace or pick up the balls early enough off the bounce. She constantly tried to redirect Kvitova's power shots, and she constantly failed. It was a little sad but definitely amusing to see Wozniacki's one-dimensional game flounder so badly. No Plan B. :help:

Hope to see Kvitova in the semis against Serena. That could become a lovely serving battle.

Yes, but it's hard to take the ball early when you have an extreme Western grip. Some can do it, and some can't.

The thing I love about Wozniacki is when she tries to deviate from her pusher game, she makes UE because she is severely lacking in talent. At one point she tried to hit with Petra and failed miserably. :inlove:

this. yesterday they were showing clijsters hitting a forehand in slo-mo and all her upper body and her legs work into the shot, her shoulders rotate through the shot and her body to. when caro hits a forehand it is all arm, theres no body rotation into the shot.

There are many ways of playing tennis. People often argue about which way is the best, which way is the most enjoyable to watch. I don't claim to be able to decide something as big as that, but I do know what I enjoy watching, and why.

I think that a lot of the time, beliefs about tennis styles come down to a question of philosophy. They are about what people believe about human potential.

Imagine a player going for amazing shots, winners from all over the court, massive serves, amazing volleys, unbelievable serve volley points, return winners, diving shots, winners on the run- I'm not talking about Petra here, but a hypothetical and amazing player. This player believes in making the impossible possible. This player believes that shots which seem out of the reach of human skill and potential can be made. This player believes that skill can reach ever higher levels and eventually reach the point where shots which once seemed impossible can be made consistently.

Of course, in reality, a player trying to do these kind of impossible shots all the time would probably self-destruct by making a ton of errors most of the time. Unless... they really became so good they could do it. But nevertheless, it's clear that such a player does not want to think about limits of human potential. This player wants to surpass them. Also, this player wants to be in control of his or her own destiny. This player takes control of the match and believes they will be able to win it themselves. We can class these players as "dreamers".

On the other hand, consider a player who does the opposite. This player believes that difficult shots cannot be made consistently by human beings. Therefore this player does not attempt difficult shots, but plays easier and safer shots which require less accuracy and timing. This player is happy to let opponents try difficult shots, because he or she believes that opponents will not be able to make them most of the time.

Such a player believes instead in the limitations of human potential, and is not attempting to surpass human limits, but exploit them. This player also is willing to let the opponent have a lot of control of the match, since they believe that their opponent will lack the skill to hit winning shots and will instead hit more errors than winners. We can class these players as "realists".

Which camp am I in? I'm an optimist. I believe higher and higher levels can be reached. I believe in great shots, in great tennis, in tennis without limits. Perhaps it's naive. But I enjoy believing that there are ever greater things to aspire to. I like to dream.

Petra doesn't have everything. It's not like she has perfect volleys or a perfect game. But it's clear that she goes for clean winners because at some level she believes she can make them. And she wants to be in control of her destiny. Because she believes that she has enough skill to hit that tough shot, take charge of the point, and win. Often she misses. Even today there were a number of "home runs" from her. Often she self-destructs and that's how she loses most of her matches. People probably wonder why when she starts missing she doesn't just back off and take it easy, keep the ball in. It's probably because that would be admitting defeat, that she wasn't good enough to make those shots, and instead she wants to keep believing that she can make the shot she just missed 10 times in a row. I'm not saying Petra is a deep thinker on court- I'm fairly positive she doesn't think on court at all, bless her socks- but she goes for shots and believes (perhaps naively) that she can make them.

Caro, with her game style, is naturally more of a realist. That is why she was so shocked today. Petra did things that Caro knew- or thought she knew- were impossible. It wasn't possible to hit winners off her serve consistently. It wasn't possible to hit that flat and hard and still make the ball. No one can do that.

Petra, on the other hand, was calmly doing what she had known all along she was capable of. This was just what she had always believed she could do.

Will Petra play this way the next round? Who knows. Kaia serves and hits much bigger than Caro and will not allow Petra to have full control of the points. Kaia herself is someone who goes for her shots and believes in them (despite usually making truckloads of errors, which she tries to ignore). But I love that Petra will believe that she can. Even if, perhaps, I say ruefully, maybe she won't. Maybe she won't reach this level again ever. But I hope so. I want to believe that even levels beyond what she did yesterday are possible. They are, right? Limits are just an illusion, any shot is possible... or at least we can all hope. We can all dream. Even if Petra comes back down to earth tomorrow, or the day after, for one day she was able to turn dreams into reality.

Mighty Kvitty whales on the ball at all times because she can't rally.

Mighty Kvitty's rally shots suck. She's a bit like Lisicki on that regard. She's the quintessential ambush player, able to beat anyone on a surface that favours her game and if circumstances are ideal, but losing to anyone most of the time. I :hearts: her because she plays the most x-treme pure first strike on the Tour right now.
