I don´t know if we had a similar thread but...

Who do you think is the best volleyer? Who is the best to watch on the net and why??? I personaly like Cara Black´s skills on the net...it´s amazing how she is playing on the net, her volleys are great, and I´m enjoyed every match she was playing..and which she is palying in doubles now...I also heard Lisa Raymond is also great volleyer but unfortunately, I didn´t see her long time:sad:

+ Who is the best volleyer from current players playing also SINGLES?
I must agree with wally, MJMS and Vinci are one of the best from active singles player, very enjoyable:)

Su-Wei Hsieh is pretty awsome at the net when she's on!

As already mentioned Cara has great reactions and her IO BH volley is gorgeous.

Among 'top' active singles players I think kiri & bepa (maybe I'm bias) have good natural awareness & touch at the net, Henin's good at the net too but her volleys are more manufactured than natural, IMO.

Also, I might get shot down for this but, I really like Sveta's FH volley

Hingis is not active. She was a phenomenal volleyer though.

I'd say the other Martina is the best women's volleyer of all time.

As for the current tour .... Raymond and Black are excellent. Of the big guns who are actually in the mix in singles, I'd say ....ummm ....

I think among top singles players Clijsters has the best volley. The 2nd part is that Kim's net awareness and net instincts are rather mediocre, so she really doesn't get enough credit.

Technically though on BOTH wings Clijsters volley is the most solid.

Hingis was a good volleyer in doubles but rarely came to the net in singles. Can't compare with the other Martina.

I just scanned the top 30. I'd say maybe Petrova or Henin have the best volleys, but really they're not that amazing, except for the fact that Justine's are jealous and discriminatory!

I can't remember if Kim's volleys are good. Serena's are much better than lots of people give her credit for. Venus has great swinging volleys.

Don't you need to be busy comparing yourself to Graf? It is still Clijsters on technique. Actual application is where it gets debatable.

I think a great volleyer is someone who is effective not just when coming in on his/her own terms but also reacts well when brought in. MJMS looks the most comfortable at the net, even coming in on weak shots. However, she usually hits drop volleys. Hingis was great, had awesome anticipation, but again preferred the drop volleys (wish she would have come in more often, she always did so well when at the net). Of the current generation, Mauresmo was probably the best, with Justine second. All these players have excellent slices as well.

Venus has excellent volleys too, when she approaches on her terms.

I think Petrova has amazing hands at the net, if she's on a good day. Techniqually, Justine is the most sound, like everything she does, using her legs so well it's great to watch. I think Mauresmo was the best vollier of this generation, it's a shame she left with only two GS titles.

Anyway, it's hard to say. Henin's volleys are quite overrated. She has quick hands, decent technique and great touch at the net but often her punch volleys are way too conservative and let people back into a point, obviously her wingspan isn't great and nor is her net sense. She could improve the latter by playing doubles but she's too antisocial.

I wouldn't consider that volley conventional.. it was a lot more aggressive. Idk.. it's tiny but while my first thought wasn't a drive volley, I feel I could call it that. I see Maria hit those a lot, and often she'd take a swing at that instead of punching.

Ok, so i looked at a bigger version on Youtube and with a better view, it's a lot more conventional than I thought. I thought Maria took the racquet a lot more.

Still, the stroke there would probably not have a worked on anything but a floater like that. If you can't put that shot away, you shouldn't call yourself a pro.

Agreed on Black and Raymond. There's no other player I'd argue as better than them atm. It's difficult to choose between them though. Black is quicker around the net and covers more, Raymond has better touch and timing.

As for the higher ranked singles players, I like Henin or Zvonareva, maybe Schiavone, perhaps even Kleybanova. None are really oustandingly good though. Then you have lower ranked players like Hsieh, Vinci, Srebotnik who are all pretty decent there.

All time, can't go against Nav.

As already mentioned Cara has great reactions and her IO BH volley is gorgeous.

I prefer her FH volley. I love the follow through she has on it even though you're taught not to do that.

Cara Black has incredible reflexes, and she crosses better than any doubles play on tour currently. Has such early preperation on her volleys, racquet always forward, and slightly middle-to-high in its height to gague the shot.

Kirilenko can hit good volleys, but she's no marvel. Her court positioning can look laboured, especially when having to move forward into her forehand volley.

In terms of best ever, technically BJK was so good. Navratilova was more dynamic athletically due to her greater physical attributes, but King could hit any volley in the book, with such technical profficency.

Sammo
Jun 27th, 2010, 04:04 PM
Navratilova ever, and now I would say Black and Stosur, however Sam's approaches to the net are horrible, that's why she's so good in doubles, because she's already at the net

That's what you call a 'punch volley';)

Drive Volleys have to include a groundstroke motion when hit.

They're better than Justine's. Justine's volleys have hitches on both sides, but moreso the FH. Mauresmo's FH volley is a very enjoyable shot for me.

The greatest ever volleyer is Court, Lenglen, or Navratilova. I would have to watch all 3 more often to tell for sure, and the only one I have seen play often is Martina N.

As for current/recent the problem with Hingis's volleys is she often didnt put enough stick on the first volley so had to hit a number more and gave her opponents the chance to pass. Henin is overrated at the net. She is probably one of the best today but that is only because of how weak the womens and mens field is in that aspect of the game today. I would say Mauresmo or Martinez Sanchez is the winner here.
