Not much of a career. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikha_Uberoi Shikha Uberoi is an Indo American tennis player playing for India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India), though an American citizen. She has been ranked as high as 122nd in the world in singles (August 29, 2005). As of 10/8/2007 she is 585st in the WTA rankings. Born on April 5, 1983 to parents Mahesh and Madhu, Shikha Uberoi began playing tennis at the age of six. She spent time working on the game as a youth at Saddlebrook Resort and also at Bollettieri and Hopman Academies. Turning pro in August 2003, She made her Grand Slam debut as world No.275 qualifier at US Open 2004. Though she has not won any WTA event till date, Shikha has three ITF Women's Circuit singles titles to her name. Teaming up with sister Neha Uberoi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neha_Uberoi), she reached the finals of the WTA Tour Sunfeast Open at Kolkata in September 2005 where the sisters lost to Anastasia Myskina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anastasia_Myskina) and Elena Likhovtseva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Likhovtseva). The match was hard-fought (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-bricker04sep04,0,7890823.column?coll=sfla-sports-headlines):Shikha Uberoi of Boca Raton won a lot of new fans with her super-aggressive play against Venus Williams in the second round.. Her coach, Rick Macci, tutored the Williams sisters for four years…As fellow Palm Beach County players, Uberoi and Williams are acquaintances. On 9/11, their local airport was in lockdown, so Williams gave Uberoi and her sister Neha a limo ride home. A grateful Uberoi invited Williams in for some home-cooked bhindi (http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=54453):Shikha invited her to dine with the family. ‘‘And guess what: she agreed. She loved Indian food, bhindi masala particularly, so we called Mom and asked her to make that.’’Despite having shared bhindi, a near-sacred bond in Punjabi culture equalled only by sharing makhi di roti and sarson da saag (http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/mp/2002/05/27/stories/2002052700950200.htm), Williams had to take down her young rival at tournament time. All’s fair in love and tennis. Uberoi is a cousin of Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi (http://www.vij.com/archive/camping_while_brown.html). Neha is still american :wavey: I don't think she gave up her citizenship since she still lives here. That would be silly especially to go through the difficult immigration process all over again. Besides, she was never a good player--why give up your citizenship just to play for India? Mightymirza Jun 20th, 2010, 04:20 PM I don't think she gave up her citizenship since she still lives here. That would be silly especially to go through the difficult immigration process all over again. Besides, she was never a good player--why give up your citizenship just to play for India? Well ``just to play for india'' also had other perks like sponsors, some advertisements etc.. I think so because India recently had a law passed that the player should be an Indian citizen. I think Shikha played for india after that so I think she did take indian citizenship  I am not sure though. I know what it is to be a celebrity." :spit: :hysteric: faboozadoo15 Jun 20th, 2010, 06:51 PM Icon?!?! TS Jun 21st, 2010, 08:04 AM The 'great heights' and 'celebrity' comments she made were quite hilarious. I mean, come on dude... But having said that, I actually enjoyed watching her play when I had the chance at AO qualies a few years back. She was a pretty decent player, but was never (ever) going to be a force. She got to 120 in singles and about 80ish in doubles. Not a bad career, but certainly not the lofty heights an unsuspecting non-tennis fan may think after watching her audition video. She's still plugging away in ITFs in the states, so perhaps her dreams of becoming the next Oprah may have to wait. I don't think she's quite serious about her tennis these days, but good luck to her with whatever she chooses to do :) Freakan Jun 21st, 2010, 10:32 AM The Top 100 is a perfect example of manipulating the truth :p She also said she knows what it's like to be a celebrity, not that she was one. Maybe she meant that she met many players that actually are celebrities ;) | |
