View Full Version : WWW: Wimbledon R128 - Maria Sharapova vs. Kateryna Bondarenko?

InsideOut.
Jun 18th, 2010, 03:44 PM
Before we start talking about Sharapova-Hantuchova and Sharapova-Serena, I think this is one encounter that cannot be overlooked. The younger Bondarenko won Birmingham back in 2008, was the junior Wimbledon champion in 2004 (the year Sharapova, who is younger than her, won the pro tournament), and reached her maiden GS QF in last year's USO. Sharapova has also yet to beat a top 40 player this year, and Bondarenko is ranked 35th, one of the highest-ranked non-seeds. This looks dangerous for Sharapova.

So who will win? I'm going with Sharapova in 3 (3-6 6-3 6-3) , but who knows?

K-Bonds just came back from injury, I expect a 7-5 6-2 win for Sharapova.

Bondarenko is like the highest unseeded player. What a 1R draw for Maria :o

Maria does everything better than Kateryna, perhaps excepting movement. 6-3 6-2

Is Kateryna the younger or the older?

Either way, Maria....in either 2 tough sets or in 3. I don't see her being just solid in the first round being enough to comfortably move through. The score may not reflect the challenge, but the match itself will be tough.

Very much depends on Katya. As she is coming back from injury I would expect Maria to win this. However were it to turn out that Katya was able to play her best tennis this could certainly turn out to be an upset.

Kat's coming back from injury so, hard to tell how she's gonna perform at Wimby. I really like this player so I hope she wins :)
BUT Maria's in better form, she should win... I just hope she won't thrash Kat in straight sets :awww:

No, it doesn't.
Winning a MM title on grass doesn't make you a good grasscourter (see Safarova, Zvonareva etc.) and the lesser Bondarenko is just a very mediocre player.

Well Maria hasn't won a grass title since 2005 so don't make out this is a walkover for Maria either.

Bondarenko's second serve alone reduces her chances steadily.

Not to mention the length that she produces on her forehand. Sharapova will gobble all this up. Won't be pretty (when is it ever with Masha these days?), but she has far more game here.

Um..

Sharapova 6-2 6-2 :wavey:

Top 40 players Sharapova lost to:
Kirilenko (hard court)
Zheng (hard court)
Safarova (clay)
Henin (clay)

K. Bondarenko (grass) is not going to be added to that list :lol::lol::lol:

Add Li (grass) that was 13 to 75 61, 12 of the last 15 games

Oh, that's right.

But Li (grass) just further proves my point that Maria has lost to players who have all felt comfortable on their surfaces

Bondarenko doesnt fit on that list at all

She should beat Bondarenko. But K Bond is a doubles player. She can serve and is comfortable at net.
This year she has been injured and thats a big factor.

Most humiliating defeat since '09 FO against Cibulkova... 7 points in the second set.. Totally destroyed.

Maria is still recovering from the shoulder injury. Its taking a while. Her game is not what it was. But she will be motivated and should win this. She loves Wimbledon.

Doesn't she? In the previous 2 years Bondarenko is 9-4 on grass. The losses came against Venus, Hantuchova, Tanasugarn and Kuznetsova. That is pretty good in my book.

She give the biggest chance to her opponents with her actually form.

Sharapova to break the streak of losses against top 40 players here, winning in straights.

Though of course I hope Katya wins

A few interesting things I have noticed about Kateryna Bondarenko's recent record at Grand Slams. She has not lost in the 1st round in her last six Grand Slams. In three of those six Slams she beat a top 20 player in the 1st round, so beating a top 20 player in the 1st round of a Slam is absolutely nothing new for her.

Since Sharapova has returned from shoulder injury she has won 9 matches in 5 slams. Bondarenko has also won 9 matches in those last 5 slams.

So Sharapova and Bondarenko actually have something in common. Here's one more thing, both have suffered injuries this year and as result Sharapova isn't the only player in this match looking for her 1st top 40 win of the year. If Bondarenko wins it will also be her 1st top 40 win of the year too.

Sharapova, pre-Birmingham finals form: Sharapova in 2 sets, and she'll thrash Bondarenko real bad.
Sharapova, Birmingham finals form: Sharapova in 3 sets, possibly even an upset by Bondarenko.

Her play in the final against Li was so ordinary. I didn't see her trademark firepower returns anywhere. Actually, haven't seen it the whole tournament. Only saw that her old serve's power came back from the grave to assist her once more. Unfortunately, the serve didn't return for one last hurrah.

I read that MJMS is out of Wimbledon and K Bond is now a seed.
What is the current draw it Oudin and K Bond seeds?

Oudin replaces Safina, Dubois replaces Oudin.

K.Bondarenko replaces MJMS, Pivovarova replaces K.Bondarenko.
