A claycourt moonballer like Klaffner on grass is just :o She would have lost to most of the British wildcards.

That being said, Jelena deserves a cupcake couple of rounds and that's what she is getting with this match-up, and then Julie Ditty next.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands looming in the final qualifying round though:tape:

Klaffner and Ditty on grass is an absolute dream draw for Jelena, couldn't have asked for a better first two opponents...Hopefully she can keep rolling and gain some confidence :)

The first couple of games weren't particularly pretty but after a slow start, Jelena completely dominated play with some great ballstriking and she was constructing the points well in the second set with some good volleying. Klaffner is hardly the toughest opponent on grass :tape: but it's still promising. Good news also is Jelena was so determined in the match. None of her moany and CBA attitude from earlier in the year.

Does she look fit? There's a picture in her domain, she looks a lot skinnier than the past weeks, did you see a difference?

Exactly what I was going to say. The best part was definitely her effort levels and the fact that she was constructing points rather than just blasting the ball.

How is her conditioning?

Contrary to what people may think, grass is a very physically demanding surface. You can't just be girthful and hit big.

I saw a wee bit of this. She had way too much power and game for her opponent.

Don't know how she's looked in recent weeks, but she had a noticeable spare tyre. Not huge, but definite. She also had a support on her wrist, and was holding it as though it was uncomfortable towards the end of the match.

what was she Wimbledon showing last year?

Yeah... I always like Jelena's chances on grass. Her groundies and serve come through really skiddy. She just needs to hold her concentration. For some reason throughout her whole career, even when she made the Top 5 she could go from a bunch of atrocous first round losses to a bunch of finals and back again.
I guess it has a lot to do with her battles with depression over the years.

Anyway, last weeks Q/F loss to eventual champ Zakopalova in ITF event in France must have lifted her spirits :bounce:

She lost first round to Malek.. was playing quite well and then inexplicably lost the plot.

Solid result, Jelena! :D

Regardless of what others think, I think even if she has to play Beth in round 3, she'll be ok. But one match at a time, Ditty is up next. Good luck! :)

Beating 2 and 1 Klaffner on grass isn´t something what deserve comments like "great scoreline" because 90% of Q draw should beat her in similar way or even easily
