why does she have to win a Slam to play in YEC? Aren't 8 best ranked players at the end of the year participating there? Or am I missing something?

Lucas_Arg

If she wins a slam she is automatically at YEC.
Take a look at Schavone, she is not going to end inside the top 8 but she will play the yec since she won a slam.

In the end at the YEC the top 8 Women that collected the most points during the year will be there:)So Maria needs to win a slam just to get those 2000 points that are with the tittle but she can go at the YEC without winning a slam just by winning some Tier I events:angel:

so that's what I'm saying LOL:devil: She just needs consistent results in the remaining part of the season to gather enough points. And knowing how she adores american - asian hardcourt swing, she will most likely collect enough of them...hell, even without serve she won a Tier I and was in the final of another last year

I hope she adds at least one more tournament at the end of this year or plays a tournament before the AO next year instead of HK. It clearly hurt her that she hadn't played a competitive match for so long this year.

Doc
Jun 22nd, 2010, 09:33 AM
True. You don't ned a slam to reach YEC and a slam doesn't guarantee entry. The eigth place at YEC is a Wild Card of the WTA - though it usually goes to No 8 in the ranking.

I think Maria COULD win a slam this year if she can play her potential. My gripe is that she hasn't done so for 90% of this year.

On scheduling, she has made mistakes IMO. Not playing an Aussie warm-up harmed her this year. Also taking too long a break after the AO. She tends not to get the best value out of the US hardcourt season either. With the shorter over-all season and the loss of so many European autumn tournaments, I think the long post-Wimbledon break she usually takes is too much of a luxury if she wants to up her ranking.

On scheduling.

Julian.

I think that Maria, if she doesn't get any injury, can win lots of points during these 3 tournaments. I know that it may sound crazy, considering the fact that the last few grandslams she played, she didn't go further that the 4r, but let's say, if she has a nice draw, it wouldn't be impossible for her to reach the SF of the US Open; and then with the "asian season" where Maria always plays well, she can win LOTS of points... Honestly, an 8th place at the YEC is not THAT impossible. I know that few people think that it's going to happen, but I have faith. That would be awesome. And if she goes there, it means that she will be a major slam contender next year.

At every slam, there is a Pironkova, Kvitova or Schiavone who have nice draws. I hope that Maria will have this chance at the US Open!

Lovely prediction from Vaidisova Ruled but I don't guess:
-Good draw at USO (and SF)
-8th place on the race rank for the YEC.

She needs too many points to defend before USO. If she can't do it , out of top20. (so stupid the doubles-play idea)

Yes, I know that she has lots of points to defend, but we don't really care about them that much if we talk about the YEC (because it's only the points she won in 2010). I think that she's going to defend most of them (let's face it, these US Open series, and the tour lately is a mess; it seems that lots of top players are in a "slump" and some players with "limited skills" are taking advantage of this; Maria has been playing good tennis lately, maybe it's her time to take advantage of that).

Also it's true, that maybe she can win lots of important points during this summer (for the YEC), but since she has lots of points to defend, it's quite possible that she won't be seeded really high; but it doesn't mean that she will have a bad draw. Just look at Kvitova or Schiavone or Jie (AO), they were all seeded pretty low, and all took advantage of "slumping" top players and reached at least SF.
Maria was really not lucky with her draws lately, but she can also get a good draw (even with a "bad seeding").

I just hope that she will stay injury free.

edit: I've just realised that Maria is curently #32 at the Race to the YEC ranking:lol: But still, I have faith. Last year she missed 5 months and was close to the 8th Position.

It's Maria's points THIS year that count for YEC - so what she has to defennd doesn't matter for that.

It does matter for her USO seeding however. The better the seeding the less chance of getting a top seed early. Although Maria is overdue for a good draw at a major that she can take advantage of

I want to see Maria at the YEC (I bet so do the organisers), so lets get those points, Maria!

Maria is simply not ready yet. Her training in Europe was not so good. I did not expect such result, but I'm not surprized she lost. Jarmila Groth played many matches already and is normal to be in a better form than Maria. However the score easily could have been different - Maria had 4 break points and did not convert any.

The following week the Tour heads to Southern California for a welcome return to the San Diego area, which hosted a tournament for 24 years until 2007. The Mercury Insurance Open presented by the Tri-City Medical Center also boasts prize money of $700,000 and a field of 30. Eleven of the Top 20 have entered, led by world No.2 Jelena Jankovic, No.5 Stosur and ninth-ranked Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva. The event also marks the return to action of former world No.1 Dinara Safina after an injury break.
