Arguably the only women who are in the running for 2nd best clay courter after JH.

Discuss.

Kuzzy by far!! If only...she could be unbeatable on this surface

Jankovic is not anyone's best clay player. She's not even a true clay player. She just moves well. She has little aspects of a true clay player.

Nadia's FH and movement disqualify her to be the best.

Ivanovic. :haha:

Its between Kuznetsova and Safina. I tend to like Safina's better because of her BH return-of-serve mostly.

Jankovic, a great defense beats a great offense on clay... plus her offensive skills have gotten better along with her serve... her and Sveta have the best movement of the 4 but jj has much more consistency than sveta so JJ

I agree. It's between Kuzy and Safina.. I prefer Sveta whose been a fave of mine since her rise in '04 (so i might be a bit biased)

AI might be playing shit now, but currently there are only 4 RG champs playing, and she's one of them.
Nadia actually has pretty good movement for someone her size, and she's compiled one of the best clay court run in recent memory that was only marred because of a debilitating injury.
JJ has had a great clay record losing to the eventual champion the two times she made the SF.

I actually think it's between Petrova and Kuznetsova.

Record does not equal best game. Jankovic does not have a clay game at all. She plays her normal game and uses the attributes of the surface to defend.

It isn't hard to outhit Jankovic on clay.

I think the surface actually helps Safina's limited movement and from her heyday(sad I use that for such a young player) her heavy shots, esp on the forehand are a force to be reckoned with at all times. She doesn't have to react as quickly as on hardcourt and grass.. and she can fight and rally or she's strong enough to hit through the court as well IMHO.

Petrova has the skills for the surface but with her serve and forehand.. (not to mention a more than adequate net game) I think she's more of a player who is capable on all-surfaces.

As for JJ, I think she's actually better on hardcourt. It's just that everyone is crap on clay and her defensive abilities give her an advantage.

Right, you need to use the attributes of the surface to your advantage, which she does incredibly well. Moving on grass, hard and clay all require different skills. The fact that JJ is able to move well on all shows that she does have a clay game.

You're right record means nothing. Note how neither Venus nor Serena has been included, despite both having had more success at RG than a couple of the girls listed.

Kuznetsova all the way

Graf didn't have a clay game, but she posted the results. You're talking the best game here. It's definitely not Jankovic out of this list.

When she is on Kuzzy.. then Serena

1- SAFINA
2- KUZNETSOVA (by a small margin)

3- NADIA PETROVA

4- JANKOVIC

5- SQUEAKY

1. Ana
2. Sveta
3. Dinara
4. Janko
5. Nadia

IMO Ivanovic is moving A TAD better than Kuznetsova on that surface so I give her the edge. Nadia's game is better made for faster surfaces.

All 5 players are good clay courter, though.

Dinara imo

Why is this up for debate?

 I can understand it's easy to forget Ana.

For me, the way she played on the surface in 2007-2008 was sublime claycourt tennis and probably trumps all the others.

I agree with you, actually.

Kuzzy gets my vote, when her head is screwed on.

Agreed. Clay does benefit Safina's movement, partly because, like you said, it gives her more time to react, but also because she's very adept at sliding - probably because she attended a Spanish academey. Also, despite her reputation as a ballbasher, when she was at her best she actually had a good appreciation for gradually building points on clay with sustained hitting deep into the court, rather than just bashing away Wimbledon-style like Venus and Sharapova do on clay.

Yup... Serena's serve is still useful on clay, and she still has the best first strike in the game. She can take any clay specialist down at any given time(and there will be nothing they can do but hope for an error.

Kuznetsova.

The only player with the effortless production of murderous topspin shots, that actually move off the court. The most authentic clay-court game on tour IMO.

Kuzy hands down.

Why is this up for debate?

Because Sveta lost yesterday, Ana the day before, Dinara earlier in the week, and JJ has never been to a final here. Between the champions and runners up of '08 and '09, in '10 they won a combined total of 3 matches.

I'd say Svetlana is the best clay player.
