This is the match everyone was hoping and waiting for!

After Maria won the resumption of her rain-delayed match (against Flipkens) 6-3 6-3, the Clay Tennis Gods decided to bless us with the most intriguing 3rd round match!

The 'Cow on Ice' is playing surprisingly very, very well, whereas the Queen of Clay and 4x RG champ is objectively sub-par.

So, who will reach the last 16: Maria or Justine?

Now she has a 23 match RG win streak, 39 straight sets since Sveta took a set in 2005

I don't know. I think that Justine can actually raise her shitty form to meet players she knows in a slam tournament besides, especially at RG.

So if she does raise a little bit Maria will have no chance, she will win this.

Yes, but her current form isn't all that great. She didn't convince me at all. That's why I actually favor current-form and able to improve Masha over current-form and able to improve Justine.

Masha's serving will be a key and thus far she's serving amazing. Reminds me of her early 2008 form to be honest... Add to this that Justine's serving is way too inconsistant and that Maria will attack her 2nd serve mercilessly! Maybe I'm delusional and out of touch with the real world, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Maria would win this in 2 sets...

I think Justine shown some good tennis so far - I'm surprised that so many think she's not in good form. She's not been in blistering form but I think she's looked really solid. I haven't seen Maria play recently but, while she'll always be competitive on any surface, I just don't see her winning this.

So Chris Evert's record is 29 matches in a row at RG?
Justine would have to win the tournament to break that reord next year.

I'm one of those who is not convinced that beating Pervak and Flipkens means much.

I'm going to tape this match and take a close look at it.
Maria keeps playing Mickey Mousers or losing early.
The best player she played all year in 2010 is Zheng, who is out already.

Old Justine would win. New Justine hasn't been playing that well. Then again Maria's form can go south at any moment. Sharapova has a chance (especially given the cosmic pattern, lol) but I think Justine is going to win.

What's wrong with having a little hope? That's what makes tennis exciting. Or rather, ANY sport exciting. Let people believe what they want. Hell, for all we know, Maria could pull it off. its hard to compare by just merely comparing the stat.. we also have to consider the opponents.. but bias aside.. henin is goater when it comes to winning percentages during service games, more stable 1st serve, more winners excluding service..

so Henin

Well I believe Justine Henin may want to settle a score from the last time they played each other. Back then no one would have thought that Sharapova would win as high as she did. Maria ended Justine's winning streak that lasted 39 matches and that kinda was the begging of the end in 2008.
I'd say Henin is more than motivated to win this match but just like in 2008 anything can be possible.

It's interesting - these stats indicate that they are pretty much equally dominant on serve - and from what I've seen both have been tough to break for their opponents. I would have thought that Maria would have to be serving better than Henin to win the match.

That said, there are so man intangibles in play stats and form could become irrelevant. Just taking a set off Henin would be a very big achievement - but two?

Clearly most people want Maria to win b/c they love her as a player or simply do not like Justine. I do not really care for Justine but there is no way Maria will beat her on clay. Henin is by far a better mover and will attack Maria's serve. I would love it if Maria won this but I have to be real about this. Henin is the better player on clay.

I guess even if Masha loses, Wimbledon looks pretty promising, she seems to be playing well now.

I think Maria will win. I wonder who will Serena's fans root for?

These are two most disliked players for Serena/her fans. Maria, better win this. :help:

please....Maria will never beat Serena ever again

I love that this poll is so close~ for some reason I expected to see it 4:1 in favor of Justine. My head says Justine no question, but my gut says Sharapova~ the great thing about watching a match against two great players you're not a fan of is that you can live with any outcome.

I love these early round delights and although I'm not a Justine or Sharapova fan I'm anxiously looking forward to it. I'm rooting for Sharapova the under-dog.

This is exactly what the WTA needs, their big star attractions battling it out on the big stage. This match-up also overshadows anything happeing on the men's side. For now the spotlight is back on the WTA! Also think that the match being so early in the draw actually adds to the excitement. Think about it, no one wants to bow out early in a slam~ in a weird way it seems that there's more on the line in this round, than say compared to them meeting in a QF (from a rankings standpoint that's definitely true).

I hope both ladies bring it tomorrow!!! I really miss Ms. FIERCE Sharapova, her fan base really needs something desperately to celebrate. She's the only giant in our sport w/out any BIG achievement over the last year (Serena~Oz, Justine~Oz, Venus~ranking, Kim~US Open).

I'm really hoping they play a five hour marathon, then follow that up w/another marathon match against Sammy, then step up to Rena...but that's just me getting ahead.

Am I the only one expecting an anti-climactic error fest like the AO final? Everyone talked that up and it ended up as a bit of a disappointing match (Quality wise).

What fun are these threads if the 'thread starter' doesn't make the poll public...ugh

I always make thsese polls public, but this guy rushed to start the thread.
Based on what they've done all this year, and all their careers on clay, Justine should be dominating the poll

Sha'po' in three. 6/2 in the third, goin' away.

She will be ON FIRE and will have a bunch of commentators changing their tune about her chances.

...only to meet Serena and be sent home.

How do I make it a public poll? When you are starting the poll, they give you options. How many in the poll, how many days you want the poll open, if you want the votes public

Don't care if Maria loses to that Allezing Woman, just hope she goes out there and plays her heart out which I'm sure she'll do. Getting a few matches under her belt on clay is going to give her much needed confidence heading into the grass. Good luck tomorrow against the Belgian midget, Maria. :rocker2:

I like the spirit :)

Mademoiselle Sharapova :cheer:

go Masha!!!

I have this feeling that Maria will win.

That said, I had this exact same feeling at the USO and then Oudin happened.
