Rodionova has very quietly been putting together a solid clay season. Two quarterfinals and now this. A great chance for her to make the 2nd week at a Slam for the first time.

and both of them are not really aussie:lol:

They may not be born Aussie, but they both now have Aussie passports and WANT TO represent Australia in Fed Cup and Grand Slams. Australia is a multicultural immigrant country - there are many Aussies who are not born here, so really there's nothing unusual about this.

Rodionova has been steadily improving since her surprise USO 3rd round. She beat Bondarenko on clay and as someone else mentioned, made two QFs. Well-done!

Never thought it would be a showdown with Jarka. :)

Indeed. I remember Nastya hated clay before. She was always losing with breadsticks and bagels. She's had good runs this year. Nice to see :yeah:.

and both of them are not really aussie:lol:

:spit: They're as Aussie as players who switched nationalities earlier in their career for whatever reason after living where they did for so long. It just would have been paid less attention than the nationality switch of Groth/Rodionova.

Have you heard/seen Groth? She's definitely an Aussie. :wavey:

"Now?" The section was already a joke. Safina, Zvonareva, Kleybanova, Ivanovic and Radwanska lumped into the same eighth is supposed to be "good" or anything remotely promising of high quality matchups/tennis? :haha:

People seem to be saying "wow, 2 Aussies in the 3r of the French"...well I'd be shocked if it was, let's say, Sophie Ferguson & Olivia Rogowska in the 3R of the French  Bottom line is that Groth & Rodionova have been winning matches in Slams for a few years now playing for their former countries, so this is really not that surprising.

That said, I think Rodionova's recent improvement on clay can be attributed to that Fed Cup match against Bondarenko (she said so herself). Representing Australia has made her a better player! ;)

Well you could say the same of Martina Navratilova, she played successfully for Czekoslovakai for years but everyone always knows her as American, same for Seles. Groth married an Australian. Does it really matter where someone is from? they have made this country their new home so they represent us, end of story. I have heard that the last name Stosur is polish, lets hope they don't claim her:lol:

Well seriously I put down Rodionova and Groths success down to pride fighting for their new country, compared to just being another Russian clone........ well done to both of them:bounce:

another laughable result from vera, it is even funnier that stosur fans sight a final against vera as a reason she could beat great players.

put this result for vera with the epic loses to vika, getting thrashed by kvitova as well lol

Actually, Nastya and Groth have only ever made to the 3rd Round of a GS twice before, so in fact this is a good result for them. And if/when Stosur joins them in the 3rd round, it will be a pretty good feat - not often do we see 3 Aussie women in the 3rd round of a grand slam.

I am late but here is my little report since this was not a show court and nobody could watch it on TV:

Right from the start it was a battle of who gets to hit the ball hard first. Whenever Nastya couldn't put pace on the ball, Bepa would win the point. So Nastya just went for it and she kept blasting that ball for the entire match. She hit so many lines and Zvonareva was quite calm throughout the match (which surprised me). In the end she just said sth like: "catch the line here, catch the line there... FUCK"
So Nastya was on her peak. I have never seen a girl hit that hard and with that great precision before.

BTW I sat next to her sister and Tatiana Poutchek. And I think another Rodionova sister. And her husband and Nicole Pratt (who is coaching her) were there too.
Ekaterina Ivanova was there, too. She was really nice when she had to climb over us to get to her seat.
And I was impressed that Arina was cheering for her sister since Nastya gave her serious death stares in their doubles the day before:lol:
