View Full Version : Alisa Kleybanova def Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-0

FFS Ana - this is going to keep happening until you drop down to the lower levels and play some MM tournaments and start rebuilding your confidence.

It was a very good match from Kleybanova, but Ivanovic's ballstriking was sub-par throughout.

Ivanovic actually had opportunities in nearly every game (BP/GPs or leads), but she was playing too poorly to capitalize on any of them. And the DFs killed her momentum is most of her service games. Just sub-par overall.

That seems to be Serbian thing. Once in a blue moon a former great Serbian player suddenly plays an awesome tournament, and everyone is like "Wow, finally a comeback for real".. But there is never a follow up. Dokic did that numerous times, like in Zurich, or at AO last year. Just to disappear for good again. Ana played really well in Rome, and now this .. against a player who steps on clay once an year..

Now she needs to play every week and she should try and enter the 50K in Nottingham next week (if challengers are good enough for Agassi) and then Birmingham and then Rosmalen. She has had enough breaks and she needs to put in the work now to get wins.

Sad to say, but you're spot on. Alisa was not only playing better but you could tell she was going to die out there before she lost. She was into every point, trying for every ball, stepping up on big points. Ana is nowhere near that kind of intensity, even though she is trying.

Dokic is not a typical Serbian, she is Australian of Serbian ancestry, like Seles is American of Serbian ancestry.

Ana didn't play bad,she played worse against the lego ninja in the first round.

We got to stop comparing her to her pre 2008 self. After the disastrous time spent with Sven Groenveld she's nothing but a slow,185 cm pusher. She just doesn't go for her shots anymore, she's a different player..her current ranking reflects her level.

Dave.

The 2nd quarter is slowly turning into a joke...

We could have a Wickmayer/Kleybanova QF at this rate.

And how exactly would Ana being in that QF make it any less of a joke? People need to get over names and realise it's a new tournament each year. Wickmayer and Kleybanova there you have two players who are hungry as hell to win and coming up to their peak.

It probably would have been more of a "joke" if Ana made it through to the QF's with the year she's had coming in. And Ana's my favourite player.

I just knew watching her play in Rome that this was not the big comeback we've all been waiting for. Her play there was solid (which is good considering she has been anything but for virtually 2 years), but ultimately unspectacular. That was not the tennis which took her to Grandslam glory.

I must admit that I really did not pay attention to Ana's draw at all because, to me, she is not a factor at all right now. If I had known that she was going to face Alisa then I would have definitely felt that Alisa was the favorite. Alisa stepped it up against Clijsters and also has this tendency to play top players very tough. I haven't been really ever convinced that Ana has improved her game much EXCEPT cutting out the bad service toss. She doesn't look so energetic in her matches IMHO. Best of luck to her in the future! Hope that this will stop the WTA having pages about her "golden moments" and so forth. That was bizarre and very transparent hyping. Sort of like ESPN earlier this year including Maria Sharapova as a "comeback kid" when talking about Kim and Justine.

I don't think this result is that obvious. I am always nervous of when Ana will make a comeback and score a decent win or two. Rome wasn't indicative, but you can't deny a champion.

She had a fighting chance in this match. I'm actually disappointed she lost, because now Alisa's road to the QF or SF looks realistic, and I like her even less than Ivanovic.

Ana http://i46.tinypic.com/2zstn2h.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/2wegw1f.jpg it's not bad that she lost to Kleybanova, but losing with this score is pathetic. In Rome when she won those matches, she barely double faulted and cut down drastically on her errors. Even when she lost to MJMS, she didn't play that badly. Then in Madrid she suddenly couldn't serve again, and that carried through to RG as well. I'm just glad her next event will actually be a smaller one for a change ('s-Hertogenbosch). Hopefully she can get some more matches in there...

anyway, it would be nice to see Alisa go deep in the draw. She's such a talented player and it's time for her to make a move.

The game that Ana possessed in '07/early '08 is gone, and I'm not sure if she can get it back, the mental side is obvious, but technical things too, her FH will never be what it was in 2007, and it makes her just a really average player, sadly :(

Ana really needs her old playing style back, the one where she was always dictating against most players and not being forced side to side by people she can outhit. This just isn't going to cut it against anyone having a good day. Keep trying Ana, things will eventually improve. They can't get much worse anyway  Congrats to Kleybanova, I admire her sheer determination to win every point. That's something you don't see in too many players.

maybe she should consider playing something lower than gs/premier tournaments
sharapova played last week and it really helped her

I don`t know what to say other than this was a very dismal performance from Ana. It`s hard to believe that she has gone from being the Queen of Roland Garros to being routed in the second round in such a short time. I also hope that she will play in MM tournament to rediscover her game.

I don't know why she isn't considering it. She's only playing ONE more International Tournament this year right before Wimbledon. The Roadmap rules don't apply to her anymore and she desperately needs some wins for a confidence boost.

Maybe it's someone in her camp that's telling her not to play the small tournaments. If that's the case their ass needs to be fired like NOW! :help:

Just watched it; Ana didn't play so badly, it was Alisa who was FAB! Ivanovic is clearly low on confidence, and her striking looked a level below Kleybanova's (in power, placement, depth, consistency) but I don't think this was about her just being awful. Her physical game is actually OK; it's that head needs working on.

If the Serbian Suissie would drop her SOB manager Dan Holzmann, she might get her career back on track. And Heinz Guenthardt is ovarated as a coach, based on his work with Steffi (who was already one of the best ever, B4 she ever hired him).

Nice win, Big Blue Eyes.

She needs to enter small tournies at play scrubs for a while. Whats her schedule for the rest of the year?

Light. Only 8 tournaments from now until the end of the year. Two Internationals, everything else is Premier/Slam.

Loved the crowd's reaction at the end. The most pathetically tepid applause I have ever seen. :tape: Really, this is getting beyond ridiculous. Nobody has to love Kleybanova - actually, I can understand that few ever will - but is to much to ask spectators to show some respect for her and not just sit there, looking gloomy and with their arms folded?

Up until very recently, I always overrated (often massively) the threat GOAT Ivanovic posed at every tournament. But not even I thought she'd do anything at RG this year.

A half dozen or so of huge FHs and nothing else. Just junk. Time and again over the last couple of seasons I have nearly shouted at the screen while watching GOAT Ivanovic matches: "Will someone PLEASE crush that junk?". Kleybanova is among the few who does so with consistent success, her firepower being key.

Still, unless her serve deteriorates further, GOAT Ivanovic will probably do somewhat better on grass than everyone expects her to, but for GOAT Ivanovic right now surpassing expectations probably means winning a match.

While you have a point, I hardly would compare Maria's draw at RG with Ana's.

Maria's 1st round was against a player playing her 1st RG draw, and her 2nd round against someone playing her 2nd RG draw, both who are ranked considerably lower than Maria.

Ana was the underdog in this match. For what ever it is worth Alisa is actually seeded. Ana is/was not.

I think Ana, Ana's coaches, and Ana's fans, and especially the media need to realize that.

Scoreline is troubling though. I was shocked at the bagel.

I was willing to grant that the circumstance (a trashing) made the reactions subdued and awkward. But after Fognini v. Monfils today, I'm not feeling as generous. Past behavior gives me no reason to, either.

Awful, awful crowd.

I've never seen such a waddle-pova as that thing that beat Ivanovic.

What on earth is she grazing on? Surely not just grass.

And in the interview she´s just as positive as winning this tournament is ridiculous!!!!

She will never accept that she´s back in the slump, she should definetely play some lower tournaments to get her confidence up, Roma was just a illusion

I watched highlights of the first match I remember seeing Ivanovic play, against Venus in Zurich as a 16(?) year old. It's really a shame to see that the girl playing back then, played so much more impressively than the woman out there right now.

Anyway, congrats to Alisa :D There was little doubt in my mind that she would win this match, but I did expect tougher resistance than what she had. Hopefully she can keep it going :)

Alisa was on fire today!Ana will never be dominant ever the younger pushers and big hitters own her and the list is getting longer and longer.
I think when she was winning she didnt have media attention and next to none endorsement, once she got the money she lost interest...she has gone soft and the money has gone to her head there is no reason to work hard when Adidas just gave her a life time deal.
She doesnt care thats all..
