Andrea had triple MP at 5-4 second set, plus one more.

 Nothing much to say really. Andrea definitely deserved to win this, but I am impressed with Sveta's backhand. It's the shot that got her the win really, she was hitting great angles time after time.

Petkovic's ball bashing cost her the match. She has zero finesse in her game. She is similar to Wickmayer.

VishaalMaria
May 26th, 2010, 05:58 PM
To be totally honest,

Petkovic has Svetlana on the ropes at 6-4 5-4 40/0, but she just got too nervous. Kuznetsova didn't do anything special, just kept the ball in the play and let Petkovic self destruct.

She tried to get it together in the end, wasn't meant to be. But I like Svetlana so I'm glad. Although, she did hit some ugly errors when all she needed to do was to get the ball in play and let Petkovic further self destruct.

It might not be apparent on first glance, but Petkovic lacks balls. That was pathetic. Just like Barrois. It seems Becker, Graf and Stich have drained German tennis players from all ment:rolleyes:al toughness till eternity. Tommy Haas, Schüttler/Kiefer Olympic Doubles Final and so on.

Wow. That was some surreal stuff. Kind of expected this to happen on day 1 and 2 but good to see some h.a.m. on day 3.

Massive choke from Petkovic... Kuznetsova was all there for the taking in the 2nd... You sensed once it got to 3rd Sveta would eventually prevail.... If there ever was a chance for Petkovic to have a breakthrough, she blew it here.

On another note, they mentioned that Petkovic wasted MP vs Myskina in 2004 and Henin in 2006 already.. what a mess.. :tape:

A bit amused at all the largely negative posts (Svetlana being a mess, Petkovic being a choker who has no balls) - where's the appreciation for what was a pretty fine match? The hitting was great out there, and while Petkovic did go AWOL at 40-0 up with those match points, she played a pretty remarkable level for so much of the match and really came very close to putting Kuznetsova away in a match where Svetlana actually played solidly.

Hope this won't affect Petkovic too much... first complete match of hers that I've watched and I have to say I'm impressed by her ball striking and serving. Mental strength can be worked on, so let's hope she does something with her technical talent

What a great absorbing match! I am gutted that I could not get to see the second set as my computer was not behaving but the third was very exciting. I was impressed by both players - Petkovic is clearly talented and Sveta was very gutsy, saving all those MPs and keeping it together in a tense third set. This result should be a major boost to the Sveta confidence, as that is only the second three set match she has won since the Australian Open!!!

Joana
May 26th, 2010, 06:11 PM
She couldn't hit a first serve in to save her life on those MPs. Sucks for her.
Sweata got lucky there. This could and probably will be another BS Slam run for her that keeps her in top 10.

That will be a very tough loss for Andrea. Matches like this can, on occassion do lasting damage to a players reputation in the lockerroom as well as their own self belief. All eyes are going to be on her in the coming weeks to see how she bounces back from this. Andrea certainly can not afford to lose another match in this manner again for a long time or she will find it very hard to wash herself of a choker reputation. The next couple of days will not be easy for Andrea and her friends will surely need to rally round her.

As for Sveta this match transforms her from being the defending champion everyone was waiting for and expecting to lose into being a legitimate contender to defend her title. Like all great players who start a tournament in vunerable shape with every match she escape defeat she gets stronger. On or two more wins and she could very well turn out playing at the standard she was playing at this time last year. Yes, for both players this match couldn't have been more huge.

Awesome match. Andrea's hitting was a pleasure to watch, so clean!! Unfortunate choke from her, especially that last MP she had, the ball was a putaway.

Sveta was actually alright in the first set, some good points. Then after the rain delay she was dreadful. Too far behind the baseline, trying to hit with Petkovic down the middle, why? She didn't seem to realise anything with a bit of width and short of a length and the ball went straight up into the air for a putaway. Third set was great from both. Even with all the choking, it's nice to see Petkovic made the third set close when in so many other matches these type of matches end 6-1 in the third.

Sveta was good in the end but today could (and should) have easily lost in straight sets playing terribly. That will likely happen in the 3R.

Battle of talented chokers.
Petkovic was hitting the ball so good in sets 1 and 2 but as soon as she got to MPs she just froze, her collapse (and against Kuznetsova of all people) is inexplicable.
Kuzzy's non-stop choking in the third set was rather funny but I hope she's able capitalize on this win.

I've said this 314725075943567 times before, but here goes: for a player who is said by nearly everyone to lack confidence in herself and to be mentally weak, Kuznetsova sure is on the receiving end of a lot of chokes.

This was one of the ugliest chokes I have ever seen BTW. Once Petkovic got to MP, she couldn't get a decent serve in, couldn't think, couldn't hit the ball properly, couldn't do a thing.

She's probably still throwing things around in her hotel room (or partying hard somewhere in Paris  ) and swearing that she'll never choke like this again, but she will. She's just not a good competitor, and she'll have to learn to live with that.

Sveta's experience really worked for her when it came down to crunch time.

Andrea, your day will come

this was the first time I ever saw Petkovic play. truly impressive, except that she should lose this ridiculous yell she makes every time she hits the ball... I make little sense of german, but does she actually say something?

she will have a breakthrough soon. at the end kusnetsova played very well as she should, given she's the defending champ.

This really shows the difference between the true top players - who are able to keep their cool on important points and close out matches - and everyone else. Andrea wasn't even close to winning on any of her MPs, just hit 4 quick UEs. Sveta couldn't come up with a winner on any of her MPs, either. Andrea just handed her the match with an easy UE on the 4th.
I hope Andrea gets her head together someday, maybe by changing her weird cry on every point? Her shoulders are very nice to look at btw.

Hmm....tPetkovic is good. Her attitude suggests to me that she'll eventually learn from losses like this, instead of crumbling.

Sveta strong! Sveta fight like Borodino!

I could never get this phrase. I mean, Russians lost the Borodino.

It's probably due to Tolstoy's conclusion about it in War and Peace- that the French had finally met an enemy that was "morally superior".

Tactically, yes. Strategically, they did inflict irreplacable losses on the French and were able to keep their army intact, if badly mauled, so a lot of historians consider it a draw.

Plus, y'all love to commemorate the hell out of it.

I've seen people claim that Napoleon himself considered the campaign as lost after he failed to obtain the decisive victory that he needed there, and that after Borodino his main thought was of retreating with as much of his own forces as he still could.

BTW did you know that Portuguese troops fought at Borodino?
