That was awful. Parra Santonja is one of the most useless players I've ever seen. Her serve is surprisingly good for someone of her level, but that's it. Most pushers are at least good at keeping the ball in play and/or have a shot they can hit with reasonable depth and consistency under pressure, but not this one.

Venus was terrible at times in the second set, and a decent player would have taken it to a third.

Well done Venus. Nice a solid without being amazing.

The first set was pretty easy for Venus as Parra wasn't getting much consistency to hurt her but in the second set it seemed as if Parra got used to Venus' strokes and general pace of shot and thus started to elongate the rallies (she was basically more competitive), however, more often than not Venus always came out on top especially on the important points such as break points and game points.

All in all, that match was key to Venus as it tested her consistency in that second set. A bit of a dip in form as more errors resulted but she got it done in two straight sets and thats all I can ask.

Onto the next round.

3 breaks was all she needed. Aranxta acquitted herself pretty well.

Really bad match I recommend don't watch it :tape:

Well done Vee though she wasnt broken once despite horrible serving :tape:

Well 60% 1st serves, 4 aces , 5 DFs () - not great but still much better stats on serve than against Patty where the serving (and especially the DFing) was bad. This was more mediocre than 'horrible', but I hope she improves all round.

edificio
May 26th, 2010, 10:59 AM
The match wasn't that bad, neither were the stats. It was a little dull. There was a bit of inevitability to the match. I don't quite understand the two hands on both sides, but whatever...so long as Venus won.

Parra-Santonja should only be allowed to hit serves and backhands. I'm still cringing.

Venus those action shots in your first service game of the match. Too much.

I don't know why so many of Venus's serves are going long

Parra-Santonja should only be allowed to hit serves and backhands. I'm still cringing.I don't know about the backhands. Yeah, it's by far her stronger side and she hit a few nice ones, but some of those "gimme" backhands that she missed, esp. the easy pass off the net cord approach... :help: Her ground game is basically a poor man's version of Errani's. :crying2:

I don't think too many people think that the match was that impressive (from either.) And yes, she'll have to play better is she's going to get past the hurdle of the third round at least.

Hm. I don't think she was as bad as people were saying. She went down in a lot of service games but was serving well and hitting big winners on all the important points. She's being very patient and although I think she could do with turning it up a little, I like this.

It's certainly a huge improvement on previous years.

APS is not a good player, besides the first serve (which she could barely get in today). That forehand gave Venus soooo many chances to attack.

I thought Venus played nicely. She doesn't need to be perfect right now. She's winning, and easily enough so that's all that matters.

Nice play, Venus! She was patient in the rallies and came in to finish off points at the right time. Apart from a few missed volleys early in the match, I thought she played quite well. This was about 7.5/10, still some room for improvement ;-).

Yeah, she wasn't THAT bad. There were the typical errors and double-faults but that's kinda to be expected with her.

I thought there were good things too including the fact that she was never broken, some great winners and rallies especially in that second set, and the saved break points.

And yes, my god, if this was last year or the year before this match would have been three sets, so I'm glad.

StephenUK

It was a sort of routine, uninspired match. Venus was good enough, Arantxa fought better in the second set but could not capitalise on any opportunity when it came along. You can see why she has never been in the top 50 and only once won a second round GS match. So, I would say ok to Venus but she will need to raise her level against the tougher opponents to come, especially as she has only won one third round match in the last five years!

Frig some Venus fans are so overly critical. She won a match routinely at the French lets just be happy lol. Venus doesnt really need to "step it up" until the 4th R. If she plays like today on Friday she will win.

Forehand is looking better and better.

Venus even ran around her backhand in order to hit forehands today.
That is confidence.

The shots had good depth, not too many service ground stokes today.
The serve was working fine, the ground strokes clean and crisp.
She was alert, came to the net at the right time.
