Pity.. she was really playing at her best before she got injured and never really made much of an impact when she was back

:sobbing: I liked her unorthodox game but if she had some proper technique and a better serve she could have been better

the fact is, as she admits in her interview, that since she was 16 she was struggling with this injure and none was able to fix the problem and every doctor wanted her to quit playing tennis

I loved her a lot for the first couple of years I followed the WTA. She had a fun game to watch, and I loved how quirky and fiery she was. She'd still be one of my favorites if she were still playing.

Mara was a joy to watch. I miss her.

That really sucks. Her game was certainly unorthodox and the sidespin on her groundstrokes was just weird.
But her gamestyle was a big reason why Italy was able to not only be competitive but win so many FED CUPs last decade.
When most people think Italy, they don't think all surface players with all court games but Mara really helped to complete their team especially when they needed a player for indoor/hard court rubbers.

I wish her the best in her next step in life.

Oh no! I've been following her since she was playing the 25K circuit. What a shame the latest foot surgery didn't help her. :sobbing:

Would still love to see her back playing doubles with Alicia Molik again; they were a great team. :hearts:

That's really too bad for Mara, I wondered why she suddenly stopped playing after briefly returning from her surgery - She was a good player, effective game when everything was working for her. Hopefully she'll be able to carry on a bit longer as a doubles player :)

lol that is simply not true. Mara's record in Fed Cup is pretty bad. She only used to win those matches when the tie had been decided. I can only think of a 3 set victory over Flipkens as a really useful win. Other than that, nothing to celebrate. I can still remember her atrocius performance in that final vs Russia in Moscow :tape:

Too bad she has to go this way

Awww that's a shame, but at least she managed a fairly long career (1998-2009)

I remember her run to the 4th round of the Oz Open 04, stretched the then dominant world number 1 Henin to a second 2nd set tiebreak. It must have been such a nice breakthrough for her having spent so many years playing mainly itf events.

good luck in doubles mara

Sad her singles career has ended but all the best for doubles. Her singles career was alright although for someone who spent the amount of time at her ranking level, her main tour success was quite limited IMO.

Easy to forget she is a former top 5 doubles player and GS winner. It will be interesting to see if she can return to those sort of heights.

Oh, and I can't bare to watch that forehand. :scared:

Is she going to play beach tennis? Didn't she skipped some tournaments to play it in Europe last year?
